A floor-length black dress is the most hardworking costume base I know. The color goes with gothic characters, classic monsters, villains, fairies and a whole run of last-minute ideas, and you change the mood with whatever you add: a collar, a cape, a crown, a wig, makeup or one handmade piece. Most of those additions come from your own closet, a thrift store or a craft aisle, and almost none of them need real sewing. The dress itself can be fitted, flowing, lace-trimmed or modest. Below are thirty ways to wear one, with notes on which add-ons I'd make removable so the dress still goes back into your wardrobe on November 1st.

Attaching Costume Pieces So the Dress Comes Back Clean
Most of these costumes add something to the dress: a collar, fringe, stars, tulle, felt bones, a cape. Since the dress is the part you'll want to wear again, I attach everything in ways that come off without a mark. Here's how I decide.
- Basting stitches are long, loose hand stitches in a matching thread. They hold trim, fringe and tulle firmly for a night, and a single snip lets you pull them out. This is my default for anything sewn.
- Safety pins go on the inside of the dress, pointing down, so the weight of the trim doesn't pull them open. Use small brass pins on fine fabric; large ones leave holes in satin.
- Sew-on snaps are worth it for collars and capes you'll wear repeatedly, since they're easy to add to a separate piece and leave the dress almost untouched.
- Double-sided fabric tape works on cotton and smooth knits for a few hours but loses grip once you warm up. It also pulls the pile on velvet, so I don't use it there.
Know your dress fabric before you start. Satin and taffeta show every pin hole, velvet bruises where it's pressed or taped, and thin jersey stretches out of shape under heavy trim. If you aren't sure, test on the inside of the hem or a seam allowance first.
1. Morticia Addams Long Black Dress Costume

Morticia lives or dies on silhouette, so the dress matters more here than anywhere else on this list. Look for a fitted floor-length gown with flared sleeves; lace panels, a fishtail hem or soft draping all help. If your dress is straight at the hem, I'd add a few inches of black chiffon to the sleeve ends with a running stitch, which gives that trailing shape and pulls out afterward. A long straight black wig with a sharp center part, or your own hair smoothed with serum. Pale foundation, sculpted cheekbones, thin arched brows, grey shadow and deep red lipstick. A fake red rose with the thorns removed, long red nails, and pointed pumps or low ankle boots you can walk in.
2. Wednesday Addams Long Black Dress Costume

An older Wednesday works with a looser, plainer long dress: long sleeves, a straight shape, very little decoration. The white collar is what tells everyone who you are. A detachable pointed collar cut from white cotton and fastened at the back with a snap sits flatter than a blouse collar pulled out of the neckline, and it doesn't add bulk under the dress. Two smooth braids with a precise middle part, using a black wig if needed. Matte skin, lightly defined eyes, straight brows and a muted berry lip are all the makeup she needs. Carry a vintage-looking hardcover book, or a plain fabric doll with its head removed if your crowd likes dark jokes. Black opaque tights and sturdy lace-ups. Don't smile in the photos.
3. Classic Witch Long Black Dress Costume

The pointed hat does most of the work for a witch, so spend your effort on it. Cheap felt hats collapse at the tip; I stuff the cone with a twist of tissue paper or run a line of fabric stiffener inside, and the point stays up all night. Cinch the flowing dress with a waist belt or a corset-style belt so it has shape. Wear your hair loose and messy, or try a wavy black or silver wig. Purple and charcoal shadow, defined brows and plum lipstick. A small broom tied with black ribbon is a prop kids understand at once. Add striped tights if the skirt has a slit, buckled ankle boots with low heels, and a sheer black cape when you'll be outside.
4. Glam Vampire Long Black Dress Costume

For a glam vampire, the fabric of the dress sets the tone: velvet looks richest, satin catches light, lace looks older. Over it, drape a black cape with a red lining and close it with a brooch. A brooch alone tears thin cape fabric at the neck, so I sew a small square of interfacing or felt behind the spot where the pin goes. Glossy waves, or a long black wig with one side tucked behind the ear. Light foundation, cool contour, a smoky eye and burgundy lips. Small costume fangs are enough; nothing graphic. An ornate hand mirror or a dark red rose, black lace gloves, pointed pumps or heeled boots, and a ruby-colored necklace.
5. Dark Fairy Long Black Dress Costume

Soft chiffon or a tulle-trimmed dress suits a dark fairy, because it moves. Keep the wings small and light, with a purple, blue or silver shimmer; oversized wings catch on every doorframe and pull the dress off one shoulder by mid-evening. I attach them with elastic loops that sit under the dress straps rather than pinning straight into chiffon, which runs. Loose curls with a few tiny braids at the face. A leaf crown is easy to make from a plain headband, artificial leaves and craft glitter. Lavender shadow, winged liner, highlighter and mauve lips. A cluster of fake night flowers, black ballet flats or low ankle boots, and sheer glitter-dot gloves.
6. Maleficent Long Black Dress Costume

Maleficent needs structure: strong shoulders, a high neckline or long flowing sleeves. Add a black cape with a purple lining for contrast. The horns are the defining piece, and the biggest mistake I see is horns that are too heavy to stay upright. Foam horns, or papier-mâché over a light core, mounted on a headband over a black hood or tightly pulled-back hair will stay where you put them. Sculpted contour, sharp brows, plum shadow and vivid red lips. A small fake raven on a shoulder clip is safer than a staff and keeps your hands free. Low-heeled pointed boots for balance, a dramatic ring and a glossy black manicure.
7. Cruella De Vil Long Black Dress Costume

Cruella is the one long black dress costume where most of the impact comes from white and red. The wig, half black and half white, is essential; choose a dress with a slit, a fitted waist or a sweeping skirt underneath. A white faux-fur stole goes over the shoulders, and I tack it to the dress straps with two hand stitches so it doesn't slide off every time you gesture. Pale foundation, sharply arched brows, a grey smoky eye and bright red lipstick. Long red gloves and red pointed pumps under the dark hem. A black-and-white patterned handbag stands in for the dogs. Big costume jewelry and a theatrical pose finish it.
8. Evil Queen Long Black Dress Costume

The Evil Queen's tall white collar is the piece to build, and the dress beneath it just needs a high neckline. Stiff felt holds a modest collar, but anything taller than a few inches will flop forward; craft foam, or felt with a strip of plastic boning sewn in, keeps its shape. Layer a purple or deep red cape over the shoulders. Pull your hair into a low bun under a fitted black head covering and set a gold crown on top. Matte skin, defined brows, purple shadow and classic red lips. The shiny fake red apple is how people know her. Black pointed boots or low pumps, a gold pendant and a decorative belt.
9. Ursula Long Black Dress Costume

A black mermaid dress that flares below the knee already has Ursula's shape. Add tentacles around the lower skirt from purple tulle or soft fabric tubes, and keep them shorter in front, since anything that reaches the floor will trip you on stairs. I stuff the tubes lightly with polyester fiberfill and safety-pin them inside the skirt so they come off cleanly. A short swept-back white wig and big shell earrings. Lavender face makeup is optional; purple shadow, exaggerated brows, black liner and bright red lips suggest her without it. A gold shell necklace is the key accessory. Platform shoes or block-heeled boots, purple nails, and plenty of attitude.
10. Victorian Ghost Long Black Dress Costume

A high-necked dress with lace sleeves is all a Victorian ghost needs underneath. Add a cameo brooch, black lace gloves and a small veiled hat for the period shape. A loose low bun with a few curled strands at the face. Pale makeup with cool grey shading at the eyes and a faded berry lip keeps it gently spectral, not gory. The storytelling prop is an antique-style frame holding a printed black-and-white portrait. Buttoned ankle boots finish it. If you want the misty look, dust translucent shimmer onto the veil and skirt, but test it on the inside of the hem first; some shimmers mark velvet and won't brush off.
11. Gothic Bride Long Black Dress Costume

The gothic bride starts with a long black lace dress, or a simpler gown under a lace bolero. Make the veil from soft black tulle gathered onto a floral comb trimmed with fake black roses. Tulle is very forgiving here: you don't need to hem it, because the cut edge won't fray. Match the hair to the neckline: loose waves for a strapless top, a low bun or side braid for a high one. Smoky plum eyes, softly contoured cheeks and wine lipstick. A bouquet of black, burgundy and dark purple fake flowers tied with velvet ribbon, lace gloves, a vintage pendant, and black block heels or lace-up boots. Keep it elegant; I'd skip distressed fabric here.
12. Raven Queen Long Black Dress Costume

A feathered cape turns a plain dress into a raven queen fast. Real feather trim sheds badly, so I prefer a removable collar: felt cut in a curved shape with craft feathers glued in overlapping rows from the bottom up, the way a bird's feathers lie. Style a tall braided updo with a pointed black crown or a slim feathered headband. Charcoal and silver shadow blended outward into a wing, black liner and plum lips. A single feather fan is an easy photo prop. Black gloves, a metallic cuff, and sleek ankle boots or pointed flats. A few iridescent blue feathers mixed in mimic the sheen a real raven has.
13. Black Swan Long Black Dress Costume

A fitted bodice and tulle skirt give the black swan its ballet shape. If your dress is plain, add a removable feather collar and tie a narrow satin ribbon at the waist. Sweep the hair into a smooth ballerina bun, the kind held with a hair net and lots of pins, and set a small black feather or crystal tiara in front. White shadow at the inner corners, long black liner, defined brows and berry lips give stage-style makeup. A folded black feather fan suits the theme. Ballet flats are the honest choice for comfort; low satin heels are fine indoors. Sheer sleeves or opera gloves if you'd like more coverage.
14. Medusa Long Black Dress Costume

Draped black with a metallic belt is a Medusa base. The snake headband is where people struggle: toy snakes are heavier than they look, and a thin headband tips forward. I use a wide padded headband and attach each snake with both glue and a wrap of thin wire, because glue alone lets go after an hour of moving your head. Loose textured curls hide the band. Emerald shadow, gold liner, luminous skin and a deep neutral lip. A few stenciled scales at the temples are plenty. A round mirrored hand fan is a clever prop, since a mirror defeats her in the myth. Gold cuffs, layered necklaces and flat sandals in black or gold.
15. Spider Queen Long Black Dress Costume

A fitted dress with sheer sleeves is the spider queen's base. Stretchy silver webbing across the shoulders looks good but shreds; thin glittery ribbon stitched in a web pattern on the bodice lasts much longer. Wear a smooth high bun with a light silver crown. Draw a web with liner at the outer corners of the eyes, then cool highlighter and dark berry lips. A jeweled spider brooch at the neckline and a web-shaped hand fan. Silver gloves or cuffs for shine, and black pointed flats or ankle boots. Keep all the webbing above the knee; anything trailing at your feet gets stepped on, by you and everyone else.
16. Skeleton Long Black Dress Costume

The skeleton is one costume I'd always make removable, since it's the dress you'll want back afterward. Cut simple bone shapes from white felt and attach them down the bodice, sleeves and skirt with fabric-safe double-sided tape, or a few loose basting stitches if the dress is velvet, where tape pulls at the pile. Keep the pattern simple so it reads from a distance. A sleek ponytail, or a straight white wig for contrast. Black and white face paint for a stylized skull: dark eyes, small black nose, neat lines at the mouth, nothing realistic. White gloves with hand bones, a little black parasol painted with bones, and combat boots or white sneakers.
17. Bat Queen Long Black Dress Costume

Wide sleeves make a bat queen easy. Cut triangular panels of soft black fabric and attach them from the sleeve to the side seam of the dress, so they open into wings when you raise your arms. Use a lightweight, non-fraying knit for these, because it hangs better and won't need hemming. Keep the panels short enough that they never drag or catch on chairs. A high ponytail or smooth bun under a black bat-shaped crown. Smoky purple shadow, sharp wings, cool highlighter and black cherry lips. A bat clutch or bat brooch instead of a big prop. Patterned tights for warmth, and platform loafers or low boots.
18. Moon Goddess Long Black Dress Costume

A moon goddess needs scattered silver stars on a flowing dress. Iron-on appliqués are the most secure, but they're permanent, and on synthetic dresses the iron can melt the fabric, so test on a seam allowance first. Removable stickers or a sheer star-print overlay keep the dress clean. Soft waves with a silver crescent across the forehead or above a low bun. Pearly shadow, silver liner, highlighter and a soft plum lip. A crescent handbag or a light silver moon prop. Delicate star necklaces, silver cuffs, and metallic flats or low silver heels. Keep it bright and family-friendly with shimmer rather than ritual-looking accessories.
19. Starry Night Queen Long Black Dress Costume

The starry night queen is busier than the moon goddess: gold and silver stars over the skirt and sleeves, tied together by a structured metallic belt. Mix two or three star sizes and scatter them more thickly at the hem, which makes the dress look like it's fading into night sky as it rises. A braided crown or loose curls under a tall star tiara. Navy, silver and violet shadow, a few cosmetic stars by the eyes and berry lips. A star wand from cardboard and ribbon. Glittery ankle boots or metallic flats. A sheer navy cape scattered with small stars gives the whole costume motion.
20. Dark Mermaid Long Black Dress Costume

A fitted dress with a flared hem is a natural dark mermaid. Add black, teal and purple tulle around the bottom for a tail, and keep the front clear so you can walk. Sewing the tulle is optional: gathering it onto a strip of ribbon and safety-pinning the ribbon inside the hem is faster and comes off afterward. Damp-looking waves with pearl pins and small fake shells. Teal shadow, iridescent highlighter, fine scales at the temples and glossy berry lips. A shell handbag or a little bunch of fake sea plants. Platform sandals, pearl strands and shell earrings. The idea is mysterious and watery without scary makeup or a restrictive tail.
21. Black Cat Long Black Dress Costume

Black cat is the fastest costume here, and a long dress makes it more grown-up than the usual leggings version. A velvet ear headband and a flexible fabric tail; I sew a short loop at the top of the tail and thread the belt through it, which is sturdier than a safety pin. A slim belt with a little bell or a gold buckle. A high ponytail or loose waves that don't cover the ears. Draw a small nose and short whiskers with liner, plus an exaggerated cat eye with a touch of gold shadow. A yarn-ball purse or paw-print crossbody, black gloves, opaque tights and flat ankle boots. Add a faux-fur collar on a cold night.
22. Black Widow Spider Long Black Dress Costume

Black widow is mostly red accents on black. A big red hourglass in felt goes at the front of the waist or on the back. The legs are the tricky part: four on each side of a wide belt, curving outward. I make them from black fabric tubes with a pipe cleaner or thin wire through the middle, so they hold a bend but give way if they bump someone. A sleek black bob wig or a low ponytail. Red-and-black winged eyes and classic red lips. A web-patterned clutch, long black gloves, and red flats or black ankle boots with red laces. Everything stays easy to walk in.
23. Masquerade Queen Long Black Dress Costume

The masquerade queen is the dressiest option. A formal long dress, an embellished eye mask in gold, silver or deep purple, and matching metallic accessories. Try the mask on with your glasses or contacts before the party; many masks press on the nose bridge and narrow your side vision more than you'd expect. Polished curls or a low bun with jeweled pins. Smoky eyes under the mask, luminous skin and red or berry lips. A feathered folding fan, opera gloves and a statement necklace. Comfortable pointed pumps or embellished flats, plus a short velvet cape for warmth that still looks formal.
24. Silent Film Star Long Black Dress Costume

A straight or drop-waist long dress suits a silent film star, and the monochrome look photographs very well. Add a long strand of fake pearls, elbow-length gloves and a jeweled headband across softly waved hair. The makeup is the fun part: pale matte foundation, grey shadow, thin brows and a small dark Cupid's-bow lip, the way performers once made up for black-and-white film. Make a title card from black cardboard with a short line in white paint, or leave it blank. T-strap shoes or low Mary Janes. A faux-fur shoulder wrap and a small beaded purse make it work as a party outfit.
25. 1920s Flapper Long Black Dress Costume

For a 1920s flapper, look for fringe, sequins or a relaxed column shape. If the dress is plain, add rows of black fringe trim around the skirt; sew them on with a long running stitch so the fringe swings freely and pulls off easily later. Glue makes fringe stiff and it stops moving. Finger waves, or a short bob wig under a jeweled feather headband. Smoky grey shadow, defined brows, rosy blush and deep red lips. A small beaded evening bag, long fake pearls and satin gloves if you like. T-straps, low dance shoes or embellished flats. Keep the hem off the floor; you'll want to dance.
26. Enchanted Rose Queen Long Black Dress Costume

The enchanted rose queen is a dress covered in red roses: pinned along one shoulder, around the waist and down one side of the skirt. Snip each fake rose's stem right under the bloom before you pin it, because bulky stems poke through the dress and pull the fabric down. A loose braided updo with a small black-and-red floral crown. Rose-colored shadow with black liner, soft blush and classic red lips. Carry one rose under a clear lightweight dome, or a small bouquet. Black lace gloves and a red velvet ribbon choker add texture. Red block heels, or black lace-up boots with removable rose clips.
27. Gothic Opera Singer Long Black Dress Costume

An off-the-shoulder neckline or lace sleeves give the gothic opera singer her drama. Add a half-face mask in black or silver and pin voluminous curls to one side, opposite the mask, so the face stays balanced. Makeup has to work around the mask: smoky eyes, defined brows, luminous skin and deep red lips on the uncovered side. Off-the-shoulder dresses slip down as the night goes on, and a strip of clear silicone grip tape inside the neckline holds them better than fashion tape on its own. A rolled sheet of music tied with black ribbon or a small folding fan. A jeweled choker, elbow gloves, black pumps or block heels, and a short satin cape you can take off indoors.
28. Haunted Doll Long Black Dress Costume

A full-skirted dress with a white collar is a modest base for a stylized haunted doll. Exaggerate the toy shape with a wide satin sash, lace cuffs and a big bow at the neck. Two curled ponytails, or a blunt black wig with an oversized ribbon headband. Pale foundation, round rosy cheeks, drawn lower lashes and a small heart-shaped berry lip. A few fine painted lines at the jaw suggest porcelain without any cracks or damage. Make the wind-up key from two layers of cardboard glued together and painted metallic, then attach it to the back of the sash with a safety pin. White knee socks and black Mary Jane flats.
29. Shadow Princess Long Black Dress Costume

The shadow princess isn't any particular character, which makes her easy to adjust. A long black ball gown with a full skirt, a silver belt, a sheer grey cape and a delicate black crown with crystals. If your gown is a little flat, a layer of net petticoat underneath lifts the skirt into a proper princess shape. Half-up hair with waves over the shoulders. Charcoal shadow, silver inner corners, soft cheeks and muted plum lips. A mirrored clutch or a fake silver rose. Long grey gloves for contrast, and sparkly black flats or low block heels. Regal and a bit mysterious, without frightening younger guests.
30. Midnight Butterfly Long Black Dress Costume

The midnight butterfly is the last of the thirty and one of the most colorful. Wings in black, blue and purple, kept compact so they clear doors. I'd look for wings with a bendable wire frame, because you can tilt them backward to sit in a chair. A sleek bun or loose curls under a thin antenna headband. Blue and violet shadow blended into a soft wing, iridescent highlighter and a berry lip. A flower-shaped purse or a bunch of fake purple blooms. Sheer gloves with faint wing patterns, black ballet flats or metallic ankle boots. A few butterfly appliqués across the skirt add dimension.
Walking, Sitting and Climbing Stairs in a Floor-Length Hem
A long black dress looks dramatic in the photo and causes most of the trouble at the party. These are the fixes I use on every long costume.
Get the length right for your shoes
Try the dress on with the shoes you'll actually wear. If the hem touches the floor in flats, you'll step on it with every stride. A temporary hem of a couple of inches, basted by hand or held with hem tape, makes walking safer, and it lets out easily afterward.
A wrist loop for the train
For fishtail and mermaid hems, sew a small ribbon loop to the inside back of the hem and slip it over your wrist when you need to lift the skirt on stairs or in a crowd. It saves the dress from being trodden on and keeps one hand on the rail.
Warmth that doesn't change the outline
Black leggings or thermal tights go under almost any long skirt without anyone seeing them, and a long-sleeved black base layer hides under a cape. For trick-or-treating, I'd add a band of reflective tape inside a cape hem or on the back of a bag, because a black dress is very hard for drivers to see after dark.
Thirty Characters Out of the Same Black Dress
All of these looks start from one dependable gown, and what changes them is a wig, a collar, a cape, a crown, a makeup palette or one handmade prop. Before you buy anything, go through your closet for gloves, belts, costume jewelry, comfortable shoes and hair accessories that suit the character. Craft felt, tulle, ribbon and fake flowers cover most of the rest without real sewing skills. Make every add-on removable if you can, so the dress survives for next year. And do a full dress rehearsal at home: walk the stairs, sit down, turn around, and check the hem, the shoes, the headpiece and any wings before the night itself.
