A pop culture costume only works if people get it within a second or two, and it still has to be wearable for a whole party, a school event or a long night of trick-or-treating. This year a lot of the best ideas come from recent films and shows, with games, music stars, superheroes and older favourites still holding their own. I've pulled together thirty that I think balance those two jobs. There are solo looks for women and men, and plenty that grow easily into a duo or a group. For each one I've covered the clothes, hair, makeup, props and the shoes I'd actually wear, plus where I'd cut a corner and where I wouldn't.

Three Details That Make a Character Read
When I style a pop culture costume, I stop thinking about the whole outfit and look for the three things people actually notice. For most characters it's a colour, a hair shape and one object. Wednesday is black, two braids and a white collar. Superman is blue, red and the emblem. If those three are right, the rest can come from your own wardrobe.
- Look at the character from a distance, or squint at a picture; whatever still shows is what you must get right.
- Spend most of your effort and money on the hair, because a wrong wig breaks recognition faster than a wrong shirt.
- Pick one prop that names the character, then stop; three props mean three things to hold all night.
- Check the outfit in a photo on your phone, since that's how most people will see it afterwards.
This is also how I adapt a look for school or work rules. Keep the three details and soften everything else: longer hems, flat shoes, a soft prop instead of anything shaped like a weapon. The character survives, and nobody has to send you home to change.
1. Rumi KPop Demon Hunters Costume

With Rumi, the long purple braid matters more than anything else. If your hair is shorter, a braided extension clipped in at the crown is easier than a full wig and stays put when you dance. Build the rest from a cropped purple jacket, a fitted black top, a pleated mini skirt with shorts underneath, patterned tights or tall socks and black platform boots that feel steady. A sharp wing, rosy blush and a berry gloss give you the stage face. I'd swap any weapon-style prop for a toy microphone, a metallic charm bracelet and a bright ear cuff. Purple ribbon and iridescent fabric paint make thrifted basics look animated, and she slots straight into a HUNTR/X group.
2. Mira KPop Demon Hunters Costume

Mira is the one I'd hand to someone who wants a confident red-and-black look. Start with a fitted red crop top and high-waisted black shorts or a short skater skirt. The cropped jacket is where the character lives, so give it geometric trim, metallic tape or patches. Metallic tape is quick but lifts at the corners on curved seams, so I'd stitch down the ends. Tall black boots, a sleek ponytail or a smooth black wig with face-framing strands, and smoky red shadow with defined brows finish the face. Add hoops, fingerless gloves and a light headset mic. Next to friends in purple and teal, the trio reads at once.
3. Zoey KPop Demon Hunters Costume

Zoey's bright colours help her stand out at a crowded party. Build the outfit around a teal cropped jacket, a matching skirt or shorts and a fitted white or black top. Colourful ribbon, reflective trim and iron-on shapes turn cheap basics into a performance uniform, and reflective trim is a nice bonus if you'll be walking outside after dark. White platform sneakers or ankle boots keep it youthful. High buns, small braids or a dark wig with teal accents all work for the hair. I'd stick to sparkly eyes, pink blush and gloss rather than heavy face paint. Star earrings, friendship bracelets and a toy mic finish her, and she's even better beside Rumi and Mira.
4. Jinu Saja Boys Costume

Jinu is a good answer for men who want something sleek rather than a bulky character suit. A fitted black shirt, tailored black trousers and a long dark coat or structured stage jacket set the shape. Keep the blue, silver or purple trim subtle; a little reads as supernatural pop star, too much reads as fancy dress. Polished black boots need to survive a full evening on your feet, so I'd break them in first. Style dark hair with a centre part and soft volume, or use a neat black wig. Defined brows, light contour and a touch of cool shadow photograph well. Silver rings, a pendant and a handheld mic finish it, and friends in matching dark looks make the full Saja Boys.
5. Wednesday Addams Costume

Wednesday Addams is still one of the easiest characters to pull from an ordinary wardrobe. You want a black knee-length dress with a crisp white collar and cuffs. If you can't find one, a black shift dress over a white collared blouse does the same job, and I actually prefer it because the collar sits flatter. Opaque black tights and flat loafers or low ankle boots keep you comfortable. Two neat braids from a centre part are the key detail, in your hair or a braided wig. Pale foundation, softly shaded eyes and a muted berry lip capture her stare without going scary. A vintage book, a small umbrella or a cardboard cello is the prop, and a black blazer keeps you warm outdoors.
6. Enid Sinclair Costume

Enid only works if she looks like the opposite of Wednesday, so I'd push the colour hard. Start with a pastel striped sweater or a bright vest over a white blouse, then add a purple, pink or blue pleated skirt and patterned knee-highs. Chunky white sneakers or pastel ankle boots keep her lively. The hair is the giveaway: a long blonde wig with pink and blue tips, or temporary colour on the ends of naturally light hair. Temporary colour can rub onto pale collars, so set it with hairspray and keep a dark towel on the car seat. Shimmery shadow, pink blush, gloss and bright nails suit her, plus a fuzzy jacket and a small backpack. She's at her best next to a friend dressed as Wednesday.
7. Elphaba Wicked Costume

Elphaba can look theatrical without being hard to wear. A long black dress with layered fabric, textured sleeves or a high neck, plus a fitted black jacket or capelet, gives her outline. A structured pointed hat is essential; I'd add an elastic or a couple of pins so it doesn't tip when you turn your head. Black lace-up boots keep you steady. The green skin is the real project. Apply it smoothly over the face and neck, set it well with translucent powder, and expect to touch it up. Dark brows, smoky eyes and a deep neutral lip add definition. A schoolbook, round glasses and a small green bottle as a prop finish her, and she pairs naturally with a pink Glinda.
8. Glinda Wicked Costume

Glinda is all about soft pink volume. A full-length pale pink dress with puff sleeves, tulle or glitter details is the base, and a pink maxi layered over a separate tulle skirt is a cheaper way to get the same shape. Tulle catches on everything, so I'd keep the hem off the floor. Silver ballet flats or low block heels beat stilettos for a long night. Soft blonde curls or a half-up style under a silver crown, plus pink shadow, glowing blush, highlighter and gloss, give her glow. Add sparkly earrings, long sheer gloves and a bubble-shaped purse. A light star wand with rounded edges is fine. Next to Elphaba, the contrast tells the story.
9. Superman Costume

Superman is far more comfortable built from fitted separates than from a thin one-piece suit, and I think he looks better too. A royal blue long-sleeve shirt carries the red-and-yellow chest emblem, made from felt or printable transfer material. Felt has to be stitched or glued with fabric glue; it peels off stretchy fabric if you just iron it. Blue athletic pants, red shorts and a flowing red cape come next, and red socks with red sneakers are kinder than tall boots. A neat side part with one curl at the forehead is the hair detail. Keep the cape above the ankles so you don't trip, and bring black glasses to turn into Clark Kent.
10. Supergirl Costume

Supergirl adapts well to the weather and to how much coverage you want. Start with a fitted blue top and a handmade red-and-yellow emblem, then choose a red pleated skirt with opaque tights or blue leggings for colder nights. A red cape and matching ankle boots complete the palette. Smooth waves, a high ponytail or a shoulder-length wig all suit her. Fresh makeup with defined lashes, pink blush and a natural red lip keeps her heroic and friendly. Gold studs and a small reporter's notebook are optional extras. I'd skip an exact replica and build from athletic wear and felt; it moves better and costs less, which matters for family events.
11. Minecraft Steve Costume

Steve is one of the few costumes where the box head does most of the work. Wear a turquoise T-shirt, straight blue pants and dark grey sneakers. Make the head from a light cardboard box with big eye holes and ventilation, then cover it in pixel squares of brown, tan, blue and white paper. The honest catch is that a box head blocks your side vision and catches in crowds, so for kids or busy parties I'd make the square headband or flat cardboard frame version instead. Little brown face-paint blocks around the jaw suggest his beard. Foam cube wristbands and a light cardboard crafting block are the props, with no hard tools. Friends can come as other blocky characters or resources.
12. Super Mario Costume

Mario is a durable costume because his clothes are basically workwear. Blue denim overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves and a red cap with a white circle and letter emblem cover it. Brown work boots or sturdy sneakers support you far better than costume shoe covers. A soft fake moustache needs a skin-safe adhesive; I'd patch-test it a day before, since some people react to spirit gum. Temporary dark hair spray if needed, rosy cheeks and defined brows add the animated look. A plush mushroom, a cardboard coin or a toy steering wheel is the prop. He's great solo, and Luigi, Peach and Toad turn him into a family or friends' theme.
13. Princess Peach Costume

Peach is for anyone who loves a formal, colourful dress-up look. A floor-length pink gown with puff sleeves and a full skirt is the base, and an old bridesmaid dress works surprisingly well with a lighter pink overskirt or peplum on top. Pink flats under the hem make walking far easier. Long blonde curls, in a wig if needed, sit under a lightweight gold crown; heavy crowns slide on synthetic hair, so I'd pin it through the wig. Blue or lavender shadow, pink blush and a rose gloss suit her. Blue drop earrings, long white gloves and a small star purse finish it. If you'll be outside, take the skirt up so it doesn't drag.
14. Lilo Costume

Lilo's relaxed Hawaiian dress is a practical choice for warm climates or indoor parties. You need a red knee-length dress with large white leaf shapes. If you can't find the print, cut leaves from white felt and attach them to a plain red dress with safety pins or a few loose stitches, so the dress survives the night and goes back to normal after. Flat sandals or white canvas sneakers keep it easy. Long dark hair in loose waves with a side part, warm blush and tinted balm keep the face simple. A small blue plush alien, a toy camera or a record sleeve makes the reference clear. She's even better paired with Stitch.
15. Stitch Costume

Stitch doesn't need a bulky mascot head to work. A blue hooded onesie, or a cobalt sweatshirt with matching joggers, is the base. Sew a pale blue felt oval onto the front and add soft fabric ears to the hood. I'd put a strip of interfacing or a bendable wire inside the ears so they stand out sideways like his instead of hanging. Blue sneakers or fuzzy slipper shoes complete the colour. A small blue nose in skin-safe paint and light blue shading round the eyes are enough. Tuck your hair inside the hood so the ears stay visible. Padded blue gloves, a plush frog or a tropical bag finish him, and Lilo's red dress makes an easy duo.
16. M3GAN Costume

M3GAN is polished and doll-like, and you don't need scary makeup to get her. Layer a beige sleeveless shift over a cream-and-brown striped long-sleeve top, tie a big striped bow at the neck, and wear white tights with black Mary Janes. A short pleated skirt underneath gives the dress shape and makes moving easier. The wig is the detail I'd spend on: a smooth, centre-parted, shoulder-length blonde cut with curled ends. Matte foundation, neat brows, a little brown shadow and rosy cheeks give the porcelain finish. A folder, a tablet case or white gloves beat anything threatening as props. Practise a stiff pose and a simple dance move for photos, and add a camel coat if it's cold.
17. Barbie Pink Cowgirl Costume

A pink cowgirl Barbie gives you colour, sparkle and an easy laugh of recognition. Wear a hot pink fitted vest with matching flares, or a pink sleeveless jumpsuit with silver star appliqués. A white cowboy hat, a pink neck scarf and white ankle boots with a heel you can manage are the rest. For metallic fringe, I'd sew it rather than tape it; tape lets go after an hour of movement and leaves the fringe hanging. Big blonde waves or a high ponytail with a pink ribbon, plus blue-toned shadow, long lashes and shiny lips, finish her. Add star earrings and a heart-shaped bag. A partner as Ken in black western wear turns two solos into a couple.
18. Ken Western Costume

Ken's western look is all black with a playful burst of white fringe. Start with a black button-down, black jeans and a belt with a decorative silver buckle. Long white fringe trim across the chest and sleeves is the detail that sells it; stitch it on in a curve, following the yoke of the shirt, so it hangs evenly. A white cowboy hat and black boots finish the outfit. Smooth, lifted blonde hair or a short wig, light bronzer and groomed brows give the toy-like polish. I'd add a pink bandana and a silver cuff rather than any western weapon prop. On his own he's fun, and beside a pink cowgirl Barbie he lands right away.
19. Sabrina Carpenter Performance Costume

For Sabrina Carpenter's stage look, start with a sparkly pastel mini dress or a corset-style top with a matching skater skirt. Wear shorts underneath, because that skirt will move. Rhinestone tights or opaque stockings and white platform boots you can dance in are next. A feather-trimmed robe is a smart cover for getting to and from the party, especially if it's cold. Full blonde waves with curtain bangs, with clip-in extensions for volume, plus a wing, pink blush, highlighter and a nude gloss, give the face. A toy microphone covered in rhinestones is what turns it from partywear into a pop-star costume, so I'd never skip it. Heart earrings and a lipstick purse finish her.
20. Beyoncé Cowboy Carter Costume

A Cowboy Carter look mixes western pieces with performance shine. Start with a white fitted bodysuit or tank, high-waisted shorts and a long white fringe jacket. For more coverage, swap in flared white jeans or a denim maxi skirt. A white cowboy hat, a metallic belt and knee-high western boots with stable heels complete it; I check the heel on stairs before I commit. Long blonde waves under the hat, bronze shadow, defined lashes, warm blush and nude gloss suit the glow. Silver statement earrings and layered necklaces add sparkle. A small silver bag or a record sleeve makes a better prop than anything western. Rhinestone trim on thrifted pieces gets you the polish without an expensive replica.
21. Chappell Roan Pink Pony Club Costume

A Chappell Roan look is about pink western clothes and big, expressive makeup. Start with a sparkly pink bodysuit, a fitted top and shorts, or a sequined mini dress, then add a fringed pink jacket, patterned tights and white or pink cowboy boots. Voluminous red curls, from a wig if needed, are a must. Pale foundation, arched brows, blue shadow, bright pink blush and a bold red lip make the face. With makeup this strong, I always patch-test the brighter shadows a day ahead and set everything with powder. A rhinestone hat, big star earrings, a feather-free fan and a toy mic finish her. If a bodysuit feels too bare, wear opaque tights under it or switch to a sequined pink jumpsuit.
22. Lady Gaga Mayhem Costume

A Mayhem-era Lady Gaga look should feel sharp and sculptural. Start with a black long-sleeve mini dress or fitted jumpsuit with exaggerated shoulders, geometric panels or sheer layers, then add opaque tights and tall black platform boots that hold the ankle. The shoulders can be shaped from light craft foam covered in black fabric; I'd sew them to a simple harness or the dress lining so they don't slip down your arms. A sharp bob, sculpted waves or an angular updo suits her. Pale matte skin, graphic black liner, metallic shadow and a deep red lip give the stage face. Black gloves, silver rings and a mirrored clutch finish it, and soft, rounded edges keep it crowd-safe.
23. Taylor Swift Eras Tour Costume

An Eras Tour costume lets you nod to several albums at once. Start with a rhinestone bodysuit, a sequined mini dress, or a glittery top with a high-waisted skirt, then layer a light fringe jacket and nude tights with comfortable ankle boots. Sequins can scratch the inside of your arms over a long night, so I like a soft layer under any sequined sleeve. Loose blonde waves with soft bangs, a black wing, glowing blush and a classic red lip set the look. Friendship bracelets with song titles are the best part; make extras to trade at the party. A rhinestone mic and a small guitar purse help, and a sequined romper works if you want more coverage.
24. Kendrick Lamar Halftime Costume

Kendrick Lamar's halftime styling makes a simple men's costume from everyday pieces. A bright blue varsity jacket over a plain black tee and relaxed blue jeans sets the look, and the shade of blue matters, so I'd match the cap to the jacket in daylight. Add a backward blue cap and clean white sneakers. A silver chain, studs and black gloves are the quiet finishing details. Keep your hair as it is, or wear neat short braids only if that genuinely suits your own hair. No makeup is needed, though a little mattifying powder helps in photos. A toy mic or a light headset finishes it. I'd suggest it to anyone who wants instant recognition without a wig, face paint or tricky shoes.
25. Squid Game Player 456 Costume

Player 456 is comfortable and easy to repeat for a group. A teal zip-front tracksuit with white stripes down the sleeves and legs is the base, with a plain white tee underneath and a white 456 patch on the jacket. I'd stitch the patch on, or use iron-on vinyl with a pressing cloth, since many tracksuits are polyester and can melt under a hot iron. White slip-on sneakers complete it. Keep your hair tousled and the makeup minimal; a little under-eye shading gives a tired look without any wounds. Carry a paper invitation card with the circle, triangle and square. Friends can wear matching tracksuits with other numbers, and one person in a red hooded jumpsuit rounds out a big group.
26. Fallout Vault Dweller Costume

The Fallout vault dweller is practical clothing with a retro-futuristic twist. A royal blue long-sleeve jumpsuit with yellow piping at the collar, waist and sleeves is ideal, and a blue athletic jacket with fitted blue work pants is a good stand-in. If you're adding the yellow yourself, bias tape or a flat ribbon stitched along the seams looks far neater than paint. Brown utility boots and a wide tan belt with small pouches come next. Vintage waves, a rolled updo or a clean side part all suit it, with red lipstick for a retro touch or a bare face. A wrist computer from painted craft foam on soft straps, a canvas backpack, a canteen and a thumbs-up pose finish it, with no prop weapons.
27. Ellie The Last Of Us Costume

Ellie is one of the best last-minute choices here, because most of it is already in a casual wardrobe. A faded red tee under an open grey or blue button-down, worn-in jeans and sturdy brown hiking boots make the base. A dark backpack with a rolled blanket strapped on top is the detail I'd never leave out; it does more than any other piece. A low, slightly messy brown ponytail with loose strands suits her. Freckles, neutral makeup and soft brown shading give an outdoorsy face without injuries. Add a small flashlight, a folded map and a pin on the backpack, plus a light green jacket for warmth. Keep the fabrics flexible and the boots broken in if you'll walk for hours.
28. Eleven Stranger Things Costume

Eleven's pink dress is the Stranger Things look most people spot first. Wear a pale pink knee-length dress with a white rounded collar, a navy bomber jacket, striped white crew socks and white sneakers. If the dress you find has the wrong collar, a detachable white Peter Pan collar is a quick sewing job and fixes it. A short, softly waved brown wig or your own short hair pushed back works for the hair. Pale pink blush, a touch of mascara and a natural lip are all the makeup she needs. An empty waffle box, a walkie-talkie or a retro lunchbox is the prop. I'd leave out the more graphic facial details for a family event. It suits adults, teens and kids alike.
29. Beetlejuice Costume

Beetlejuice stands out through bold stripes, wild hair and odd makeup, not gore. A black-and-white vertically striped suit over a white shirt and narrow black tie is the classic. If you can't find a suit, striped trousers with a matching blazer or long cardigan works well. Black loafers or lace-up boots finish the outfit. For the hair, washable colour spray in white or pale green plus a firm product gives the lifted mess; spray it outdoors and cover your shoulders, because it drifts. White foundation goes on lightly, with purple and green shadow round the eyes. Skip wounds. A small handbook, striped socks and a toy ticket number are the props, and a partner in a red formal dress makes the duo.
30. Labubu Costume

Labubu turns the fuzzy collectible into a cute, wearable outfit. Start with a brown, beige, pink or pastel faux-fur hoodie and matching shorts, skirt or joggers, then add big rounded fabric ears to the hood and a pale oval belly panel. Faux fur sheds a lot when you cut it, so I cut from the back with small snips through the backing only, which keeps the pile long and the mess down. Opaque tights if needed and furry boot covers over comfy sneakers finish the body. Tuck your hair into the hood so the ears stand out. Rosy cheeks, a button nose and a wide painted smile with small rounded teeth give the face. Paw mittens, a tiny plush bag and friends in other colours make a group.
Taming a Cheap Wig Before the Party
Almost every look here leans on hair, and most of us buy budget synthetic wigs. They usually arrive flat, shiny and shedding. A little prep the week before makes a big difference.
- Shake it out and brush it gently from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb; brushing from the roots pulls fibres out.
- Spray lightly with water mixed with a little fabric softener or wig conditioner to calm static and frizz.
- A touch of dry shampoo or translucent powder takes the plastic shine off for photos.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from hot tools, ovens and candles unless the label says heat-safe; fibres can frizz or melt.
- Pin the wig through a wig cap at the crown and behind each ear, so hats and crowns have something firm to hold.
Green, White and Blue Skin Without Ruining a Collar
Elphaba, Beetlejuice and Stitch all ask for coloured skin, and the problem is rarely putting it on. It's keeping it off your clothes and getting it off your face afterwards. I only use makeup made for skin, and I test it on the inside of my wrist the day before.
Apply it in thin layers, dress before you paint if the costume pulls over your head, and press translucent setting powder over everything. Leave a faint fade at the jawline instead of a hard edge, so a collar brushing against it doesn't pick up a stripe. At the end of the night, an oil-based cleanser or balm breaks down cream colour far faster than soap. Remove it gently and moisturise afterwards.
One Signature Detail Beats a Perfect Replica
This mix covers new film and TV favourites, older characters, music moments, games and plenty of simple homemade options. None of them needs to be an exact copy. I'd focus on the character's colours, outline, hair and one prop people will recognise, and then make the rest comfortable. Good shoes, secure layers and light props make any costume easier to wear for hours, and tights, leggings, jackets or longer skirts adapt short or fitted outfits for school or a cold night. Dress alone or with friends, but try the whole outfit on once before the day.
