A TV character costume lives or dies on whether someone at the party says the name before you do. The thirty below run from streaming hits and old sitcoms to fantasy queens, plus a few duos and one group, and each has a plan from hair down to shoes and a single prop. I build most of them from closet clothes and thrift finds, because a screen character is usually a colour story and a silhouette, not a replica. Pick the show you actually watch, nail its two or three signature colours, and let one accessory do the talking.

Thrifting a Character From Its Screen Palette
Before I shop for any TV costume, I pause the show on a full-length shot and write down the three colours the character is wearing. That list goes with me to the thrift store, and it keeps me from buying the near-miss navy or the wrong red. Most of the looks below are made from ordinary clothes, so the colour match does the work a costume label would.
- Shop by colour first and fit second. A blazer two sizes up can be pinned at the back for one night; a jacket in the wrong shade can't be fixed.
- Check fibre content on anything you might dye. Cotton and linen take fabric dye well, while polyester barely shifts with ordinary dye.
- Look in the men's section for blazers, ties and oversized sweaters, and in kids' sizes for small bags and novelty props.
- Buy the signature prop or headpiece last, once you know the outfit's exact colours, so it doesn't clash.
If the character's outfit changes every episode, as with Mabel, Moira or Alexis, pick the single look fans quote most and copy that one. A mix of three episodes usually reads as nobody in particular.
1. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Dress

Wednesday is the easiest character on this list to get right and the easiest to get slightly wrong. The black knee-length dress needs a crisp white collar and cuffs; a limp collar reads as a school uniform, so I starch or interface it before anything else. Add opaque black tights, chunky loafers or lace-ups, and two tight braids from a centre part, or a black wig styled the same way. Pale matte skin, soft eyes and a muted berry lip are enough. Carry an old book or a black umbrella, and hold a straight face for photos. It suits kids, teens and adults, and it is calm enough for school and a long walk of trick-or-treating.
2. Eleven Costume With Pink Dress And Blue Jacket

Eleven's early look is pale pink, blue and white, and getting those three shades right does more than any wig. I look for a pink dress with a small collar and a gathered skirt, then a lightweight blue bomber, white crew socks and white sneakers. A short brown wig gives the cropped hair, though short natural hair is fine. Keep makeup to a little neutral shadow. An empty waffle box is the prop everyone knows. In cold weather, skin-tone leggings keep the silhouette intact.
3. Penelope Featherington Costume With Regency Gown

Penelope doesn't need a made-to-order Regency gown. What matters is the empire waist sitting just under the bust, and a bright yellow, green or coral that her family would wear; a waist that drops to the natural line turns it into a modern sundress. Add short puff sleeves, satin gloves, flats and a drawstring purse. Copper or red curls with a few pinned sections, or a curled wig, then rosy cheeks and a pink lip. A feathered headband, a fan and costume pearls finish it, and a cropped cardigan over the top is period-plausible enough for an outdoor evening.
4. Mabel Mora Costume With Faux Fur Coat

Mabel's wardrobe is about texture and saturated colour layered together, so this is the place to raid your own closet. Start from a colourful mini dress, a plaid skirt set or a bold sweater with fitted pants, then throw a bright faux fur coat in yellow, orange or red over it. Ankle boots, gold hoops and layered necklaces go on next. Dark hair in loose waves with a centre part, winged liner and a strong berry lip set the face. Big over-ear headphones and a sketchbook are props nobody has to explain, and a structured handbag keeps it city-smart.
5. Carmy Berzatto Costume With Kitchen Apron

Carmy is a men's costume built entirely from work clothes, which is why it looks right when it's slightly worn. A fitted white crew-neck T-shirt, dark work pants and black kitchen shoes or clogs form the base. Tie a dark blue or black apron firmly at the waist; I fold the top over once so it sits the way a real kitchen apron does after a shift. Loose messy curls, natural skin and maybe a touch of shading under the eyes. Carry a wooden spoon, a folded towel or a handwritten menu. If you want his tattoos, draw the lines on a skin-tone sleeve instead of your arm, so nothing smudges onto a white shirt.
6. Ted Lasso Costume With Blue Tracksuit

The tracksuit is the whole read for Ted Lasso, so match the jacket and pants rather than pairing two near-navies. Wear it over a light blue polo with white sneakers, a whistle and a visor or cap. Hair goes in a neat side part, and the moustache should be a stick-on made for skin; I trim the edges a little before applying because a costume moustache straight from the packet looks too even. A clipboard with practice notes and a cheerful handwritten sign carry the personality. For an outdoor party, a thermal layer under the polo is invisible and very welcome.
7. Janine Teagues Costume With Teacher Cardigan

Teachers ask me for Janine more than any other character here, and it's because the costume is basically a good school-day outfit. A printed midi dress, or a patterned blouse tucked into a bright knee-length skirt, goes under a cheerful cardigan. Add practical flats, small studs and a tote. Wear natural hair in a neat style, a high puff, twists or curls, with rosy blush and a glossy neutral lip. A stack of folders, stickers or a handmade planner, plus a visitor badge with an invented school name, makes it specific without breaking any dress code.
8. Moira Rose Costume With Black And White Dress

Moira only works if you commit, so I treat every piece as a sculpture. A structured black dress with white detail, exaggerated sleeves or an uneven hem goes over patterned tights and sculptural black ankle boots. Pile on oversized necklaces or one dramatic collar piece. The wig matters most: short and very full, in platinum, silver or black and white, and I tease and spray it before the party, since synthetic volume collapses on the drive. Smoky eyes, strong brows and lashes and a deep red lip, then big sunglasses, a small structured bag and long black gloves. Save her for a party where people will enjoy the posing.
9. Alexis Rose Costume With Boho Mini Dress

Alexis is the costume you'll quietly keep wearing in November. Look for a printed mini dress with ruffles, florals or a loose peasant shape, add a cropped jacket if it's cool, and finish with suede ankle boots or low heeled booties. Long blonde waves with a centre part, a wig if you need one, glowy bronzed skin, soft lashes and a glossy pink lip. Layer fine necklaces and bracelets and carry a small crossbody. Oversized sunglasses or a made-up event invitation are her props. The styling should look a little careless, never fussy.
10. Rachel Green Costume With Coffee Shop Apron

For a last-minute costume, Rachel's coffee shop uniform is my first suggestion because most people own most of it. A fitted black or white short-sleeve top, a black mini skirt and opaque tights, then a green waist apron and black loafers or ankle boots. The hair is the character: medium-length brown layers with a round-brush blowout and plenty of bounce. Neutral brown shadow, light blush and a rose lip. Carry an empty coffee cup, an order pad and a pen, and add a little name tag. Straight black trousers swap in for the skirt on a cold night.
11. Carrie Bradshaw Costume With Tulle Skirt

The opening-credits Carrie depends on contrast: a plain fitted pale pink tank or bodysuit against a white layered tulle skirt above the knee. Cheap tulle skirts often have only one or two layers, and I'd add a second skirt underneath before buying a pricier one, since the fullness is what people remember. Strappy heels or pointed pumps depending on how far you're walking, full blonde curls, luminous skin and a glossy neutral lip. A small baguette bag, a nameplate-style necklace and a folded newspaper finish her. If it's chilly, pick a cropped coat that leaves the skirt showing.
12. Blair Waldorf Costume With Prep School Uniform

Blair is mostly classic separates: a white button-down, navy blazer, plaid pleated skirt and opaque tights, with polished loafers or low pumps and a structured bag. The detail that makes it her and not a generic schoolgirl is the padded headband, in red, navy or plaid. I'd skip the thin plastic versions because they slide back within an hour; a wider padded band grips better. Smooth dark brown waves, defined lashes, pink blush and a berry lip. A notebook or flip phone works as the prop, and a sensible skirt length keeps it appropriate for public events.
13. Fran Fine Costume With Animal Print Outfit

Fran Fine is a gift for anyone who loves bold 1990s dressing, and almost all of it turns up in thrift and vintage racks. Wear an animal-print mini dress, or a fitted leopard top with a black mini skirt, plus opaque tights and pointed black pumps or ankle boots. A cropped faux fur jacket adds glamour and warmth. Big dark hair is non-negotiable: hot rollers and a lot of hairspray, or a full wig. Black liner, sculpted brows, rosy cheeks and bright red lips, then gold hoops, stacked bracelets and a small handbag. An oversized cordless phone is the funniest prop, and I keep the hemline playful rather than revealing.
14. Lucy Ricardo Costume With Polka Dot Dress

Lucy's polka dots need to be bold and evenly spaced; tiny dots blur into grey in photos. Choose a knee-length dress with short sleeves, a fitted waist and a full skirt, tie a white apron over it, and add low black pumps or vintage-style flats. Red curls or a pinned updo, from a wig if needed, with arched brows, black mascara, rosy cheeks and red lipstick. Pearls and small studs finish it. A mixing bowl, wooden spoon or empty candy box gives you the comedy. Wear a soft petticoat, not a hoop, so you can sit down.
15. Rose Nylund Costume With Pastel Cardigan

Rose Nylund is the costume I suggest to adults who want to stay covered and comfortable all night. A pastel blouse with a soft bow or gathered neck goes with a cream midi skirt or relaxed high-waisted trousers, a matching cardigan and low pumps. The short blonde wig needs rounded volume; I brush it out and set it with a little spray so it doesn't look flat under party lights. Gentle pink blush and rose lipstick, pearl earrings, a brooch and a structured handbag. A little book of St. Olaf stories gets a laugh. Lightweight knits stop you overheating while handing out candy.
16. Steve Urkel Costume With Suspenders

Urkel is built from cheap closet pieces, and the fit is the joke. A bright striped button-down tucks into high-waisted khakis, rolled just above the ankle, with red suspenders, white crew socks and brown loafers or lace-ups. Oversized round glasses are essential; buy clear-lens frames so you can actually see. Short neat hair, natural skin and a raised eyebrow for photos. Carry a notebook, a calculator or a harmless science project, and add a bright bow tie. Adjust the suspenders so they hold the pants up without digging into your shoulders by the second hour.
17. Fresh Prince Costume With Colorful Windbreaker

The Fresh Prince look is loud early-1990s streetwear, but it still needs editing. I start with one patterned shirt or graphic tee and one oversized neon windbreaker, then hold the rest to two strong colours so it reads as a choice and not a pile. Relaxed jeans, printed shorts or athletic pants with one cuff rolled, high-top sneakers and a cap backward or tilted. A neat high-top haircut or a suitable wig, natural skin. A backpack, a chunky watch or a retro music player makes the prop. It's very easy to dance in.
18. Daphne Blake Costume With Purple Dress

Daphne's palette is purple, pink and green and nothing else, so I edit out any accessory that breaks it. A long-sleeve purple mini dress with a little flare, pale pink tights and purple low boots or booties. Tie the bright green scarf neatly at the side of the neck. Red or auburn waves held back with a purple headband, then soft lavender shadow, pink cheeks and a rosy lip. A magnifying glass or a cardboard clue is enough of a prop. A fitted purple coat keeps you warm and still in palette, and she's the natural anchor for a Mystery Inc. group.
19. Velma Dinkley Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma is the fastest costume here, as long as the orange is really orange. An oversized orange turtleneck goes with a red pleated skirt at a comfortable length, orange knee socks and red Mary Janes or low flats. The short bob with blunt bangs can be your own hair or a wig. Square clear-lens glasses, natural makeup and lightly defined brows. Carry a thick mystery novel or a notebook of pretend clues. Warm shorts or leggings under the skirt make it workable for a long night outside, and it passes school rules easily.
20. Lorelai And Rory Gilmore Duo Costume

Lorelai and Rory suit a mother and daughter, sisters or two close friends, and the fun is in the contrast. Lorelai wears dark bootcut jeans, a fitted graphic tee, a cropped jacket and black ankle boots, with long dark waves and an oversized coffee cup. Rory gets a navy sweater over a collared shirt, a plaid skirt or straight jeans, tights and loafers, smooth brown hair and a stack of books. Matching takeout cups or invented town-event flyers tie the two together. I keep both outfits to navy, burgundy, brown and denim so they look like they came from the same small town.
21. Jim And Dwight Office Duo Costume

Jim and Dwight are pure office wear, which makes them cheap, comfortable and surprisingly clear as a pair. Jim takes a pale blue button-down, a striped tie, dark trousers and plain dress shoes, with slightly messy hair, an invented company badge and a knowing look at the camera. Dwight gets the mustard short-sleeve shirt, brown patterned tie, dark slacks and sturdy brown shoes, plus centre-parted hair and large square glasses. Here's the trick that sells it: a stapler set in clear craft resin or tinted gel. Leave real office supplies at home, since nobody wants to carry them through a crowd.
22. Squid Game Player Costume With Green Tracksuit

The Squid Game player is unisex and scales from one person to a whole office. A matching green zip tracksuit with white trim, a plain white T-shirt and white slip-ons make the uniform; I sew the three-digit number onto a patch and pin it on, so the tracksuit stays wearable afterward. Natural hair and minimal makeup. A paper invitation with the circle, triangle and square, or a small tin of plain candy, is plenty. Skip anything gory. In a group, give everyone a different number.
23. Loki TVA Costume With Brown Jacket

Loki's TVA outfit is clever because it's office clothes, not armour. A white dress shirt, brown tie and brown pleated trousers go under a tan or brown utility jacket, with dark lace-up shoes, an invented time-agency patch and an ID badge. Shoulder-length dark hair with curled ends, from a black wig if needed, and pale polished skin with soft eyes. Carry a folder of timeline notes or a small retro desk clock. The gold horns help the read, but they're wide; I'd make them from lightweight foam and take them off in tight spaces.
24. Wanda Maximoff Retro Halloween Costume

Wanda's retro Halloween look from the show is meant to look homemade, which takes the pressure off. A red fitted top or leotard over opaque pink tights, a short red cape and knee-high red boots, with shorts or a red skirt if you want more coverage. The pointed headpiece is the key; I cut it from craft foam and glue it to a padded headband so it stays put through auburn waves. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a red lip, red gloves and a vintage candy bucket. Leave out armour or battle props. She pairs well with a Vision for a retro superhero couple.
25. Daenerys Targaryen Costume With Blue Gown

For Daenerys, the braids do more work than the dress. A floor-length pale blue or grey gown with a fitted waist and draped shoulders, a matching cape or textured wrap, and flat grey boots under the hem. Pull several small braids back from the face on a long platinum wig; I braid it on a wig head the day before, because doing it on your own head pulls the lace forward. Luminous skin, pale pink lips and soft highlight. A small dragon figurine or scale-textured clutch is the safe prop. Choose a lightweight fabric so the skirt moves, and wear thermal leggings outside.
26. Rhaenyra Targaryen Costume With Black Gown

Rhaenyra is the darker sister to Daenerys, and black fabric hides a lot of thrift-store shortcuts. Look for a floor-length dress with structured shoulders, textured panels or a little red embroidery, a dark cape, and low black boots hidden under the skirt. The platinum wig goes in loose waves with two twisted sections pinned at the back. Smoky eyes, defined brows, muted blush and a rose lip, plus an antique-style necklace or a chain draped across the shoulders. A scale-pattern clutch replaces any complicated prop. Hem the cape to ankle length; anything longer gets stepped on in a crowd.
27. Beth Dutton Costume With Faux Fur Coat

Beth Dutton is modern Western dressing with an attitude, and the coat carries it. A printed midi dress, or a fitted blouse tucked into dark bootcut jeans, then a bold faux fur coat and pointed Western boots. Loose, slightly tousled blonde waves, defined eyes, bronzed cheeks and a muted red or berry lip. Statement earrings, a structured bag and an empty manila folder as the prop. Faux fur can get heavy over a long evening, so I try the coat on with the bag over the shoulder before deciding. Leave the drinking and fighting jokes out; the coat and the stare are enough.
28. Thirteenth Doctor Costume With Long Coat

The Thirteenth Doctor is comfortable enough for any age and one of the better choices for a cold October night. Navy cropped trousers, a dark top with thin rainbow stripes across the chest, and a long pale grey or light blue coat, with blue socks and sturdy lace-up ankle boots. A chin-length blonde bob with a side part, real or wig, and natural makeup. A cardboard sonic screwdriver painted with care, smooth edged and without flashing lights, is the prop. Tiny mismatched earrings are a detail fans will notice. Keep the stripes narrow and only across the chest; a fully striped top loses the reference.
29. Sherlock Holmes Costume With Dark Wool Coat

Modern Sherlock is all coat and collar. A fitted white or pale blue shirt, dark trousers and polished black lace-ups go under a dark blazer and a long charcoal wool coat with the collar turned up; I press the collar up with a little steam so it doesn't flop by the end of the night. Wrap a navy scarf at the neck and leave dark curls full. Light contouring is enough. Carry a magnifying glass, a notebook or a folder of clues, and skip the pipe, which belongs to older versions. It works for any gender and it's warm.
30. Yellowjackets Soccer Team Group Costume

The Yellowjackets team is a group costume with nothing frightening in it. Everyone wears a yellow and blue soccer jersey, matching shorts, knee socks and cleats or sneakers, with yellow varsity jackets on top if it's cold. Practical ponytails, braids or loose 1990s waves, and natural makeup with a little bronzer. Iron-on number and team-crest patches go on removable backing so the jerseys can be reused. A soccer ball, a duffel bag and water bottles are the props. Keep the clothes clean and undistressed for a party crowd, and let each person vary the jacket or the hair so the group doesn't look like a team photo.
Wigs for Platinum, Red and Braided Characters
Daenerys, Rhaenyra, Lucy, Moira and Daphne all rely on hair that most people don't have, and cheap synthetic wigs are where these costumes go wrong. A wig straight from the bag usually looks too shiny and too flat, and it sheds along the parting. I brush it out gently with a wide-tooth comb, trim any fringe a little at a time, and dust the parting with a bit of dry shampoo or powder to take the shine down.
Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons, oven doors and candles on a party table, because most cheap fibres frizz or melt with heat. A wig cap plus two or three bobby pins at each side holds the wig through dancing. If you don't want a wig at all, a semi-permanent colour or a coloured hairspray can stand in for red or auburn characters, but test the spray on a white towel first, since some brands rub off onto collars.
Props That Say the Show Before You Do
For lesser-known shows, the prop carries more weight than the clothes. A waffle box, a gel-encased stapler or a sonic screwdriver gets a laugh of recognition from across a room, long before anyone studies your outfit. I keep props light and hand-sized, with no sharp edges, so you can hold a drink and a plate as well. If you'll be in a crowd, choose something that tucks into a pocket or a tote.
Wednesday Is Still the Easiest One to Get Right
None of these characters needs a screen replica. Match the colours, the outline, the hair, the shoes and one prop, and people will say the name. Sitcom and office characters come almost entirely out of a closet; the fantasy queens need a wig and a long skirt to change ordinary pieces into something else. Before you go, wear the whole thing for half an hour at home, walk in the shoes and check what you can see through any glasses. That small rehearsal catches most of what goes wrong on the night.
