The 90s costumes that work best mix pop culture people still remember, loud decade fashion and pieces you can wear all night. Think plaid mini skirts, baggy jeans, tiny sunglasses, platforms, bright windbreakers and a lot of scrunchies. Most of the ideas here can be put together from a closet or a thrift store, from easy DIY looks to TV characters, music icons, toys and group themes. Each one covers the clothing, hair, makeup, accessories, props and shoes, so nothing is left half-finished. You'll find solo costumes, couples, duos and groups, ranging from a ten-minute outfit to a proper recreation.

What Makes an Outfit Read as 1990s
A lot of 90s clothing is back in shops right now. That sounds helpful, but it causes a problem: a modern crop top and wide jeans can look like any ordinary Saturday. What tells people it's the 90s is usually proportion and a handful of small details.
- Fit at the extremes. Either very baggy, with jeans pooling at the ankle and shirts two sizes up, or very slim, like a slip dress or a tiny cardigan. A middle-of-the-road fit looks current.
- Fabrics of the era: flannel, satin, acid-wash or light-wash denim, crushed velvet and nylon windbreakers.
- Small hair accessories. Butterfly clips, scrunchies, snap clips and two face-framing strands pulled loose at the front date a look faster than any garment.
- Jewelry that's plastic or very thin, like stretchy tattoo chokers, small hoops and bead bracelets.
- Shoes with weight. Platform sneakers, chunky loafers and lace-up boots look right where slim modern trainers don't.
If a costume isn't reading as the decade, I'd add a hair accessory before buying another piece of clothing. It's nearly always the quickest fix.
1. Cher Horowitz Clueless Costume

Cher Horowitz is the yellow plaid blazer and matching pleated mini skirt, and that set is where your effort should go. A white fitted top or cardigan goes underneath, with white knee-high socks and black Mary Janes. A long blond wig with smooth, softly curled ends gets the hair right. Keep the makeup fresh with pink blush, glossy lips, defined lashes and tidy brows. Carry a small fuzzy backpack, a flip phone or a tiny shopping bag, and add gold hoops and a simple clip. Yellow plaid is hard to thrift as a matching set, so I often pair a plaid skirt with a plain yellow blazer and add a plaid pocket square; from across the room it reads the same. On a cold night, skin-tone tights go under the socks.
2. Dionne Davenport Clueless Costume

Dionne Davenport is the bolder Clueless choice, built on coordinated plaid. Start with a black, white and red plaid mini skirt and a fitted blazer, a white blouse underneath, knee-high stockings and platform Mary Janes. Long braids, your own or a braided wig, go under the dramatic black-and-white hat. Polished makeup with defined liner, berry lipstick and glowing cheeks suits her, along with big earrings, a mini handbag and a vintage-style phone. Match the plaids as closely as you can, but don't chase perfection. A wide hat sitting on braids slides around, so I sew a small comb into the inside band to anchor it. Strong contrast and confident posing sell the character.
3. Fresh Prince Costume

Bright colors and oversized layers make the Fresh Prince. Pair a neon graphic T-shirt with patterned shorts or loose color-block pants, then add an open printed shirt, a windbreaker or overalls with the straps down. High-tops, striped socks and a backward cap finish the base. Short hair goes into a high-top shape, or wear a textured wig. A little brow definition and shine-control powder are all the makeup needed. Carry a retro radio, a basketball or a bright backpack. Mixing geometric prints is the whole point, so look for purple, teal, yellow and hot pink at the thrift store. Buy a size up in everything; a 90s outfit that fits neatly just looks like modern clothes.
4. Rachel Green Waitress Costume

Rachel Green's coffeehouse waitress look is early Friends in a few basic pieces. Wear a fitted black T-shirt, a short black skirt, sheer tights and a white waist apron, with black ankle boots or chunky loafers. The hair is the costume. You need a layered brunette wig with face-framing volume and flipped ends, and most cheap versions need a trim and a pass with a round brush before they look right. Natural makeup suits her: neutral shadow, brown liner, rosy blush and a muted lip. Pin a handwritten name tag on the shirt and carry an empty coffee pot or a mug, with small silver earrings and a simple watch. Every piece is light and familiar, which is why I suggest it for long parties where comfort matters.
5. Spice Girls Group Costume

Five friends, five Spice Girls, each with her own 90s personality. Sporty wears a cropped athletic top, track pants and sneakers. Baby gets a pastel mini dress, pigtails and platforms. Scary wears leopard print, big curls and chunky boots. Ginger needs the red mini dress with the British flag front, and Posh a sleek black dress with a sharp bob. Makeup follows each role, from soft pink gloss to dramatic liner, and everyone holds a toy microphone, with small hoops or chokers where they fit. The outfits shouldn't match. The flag dress takes the most work, so I paint or appliqué the flag on a separate panel and tack it to a plain red dress, which leaves the dress wearable afterward.
6. Britney Spears Schoolgirl Costume

This is a fan-made version of Britney Spears’ late-90s schoolgirl look: a gray cardigan, a white button-down and a pleated black skirt. Tie the shirt at the waist but keep the overall result comfortable and public-friendly. Knee-high socks and sturdy black Mary Janes beat very high heels. Blond hair goes into two braided pigtails with pink fluffy ties, and fresh makeup with rosy cheeks, defined lashes and pale pink gloss suits it. Carry a notebook or a small school backpack, and a headset microphone makes the music reference clear. A knotted shirt works loose as you move, so I tie it over a fitted camisole and pin the knot from inside. Choose lengths with comfortable coverage for a workplace or daytime event.
7. TLC No Scrubs Group Costume

A TLC-inspired trio wants coordinated futuristic streetwear, not three identical outfits. Dress each person in metallic silver cargo pants, a fitted black or white top and a reflective jacket or vest, with chunky platform sneakers, tinted wraparound glasses and silver hoops. Give each member a different hairstyle, such as a short sculpted cut on one and sleek long layers on another. Glossy neutral makeup with sharp liner and a touch of silver shadow ties the faces together. Toy microphones or small metallic bags work as props. Metallic cargo fabric is often stiff and noisy, so I'd size up for dancing. Keeping the palette to silver, black and white is what unifies the trio.
8. 90s Boy Band Group Costume

A 90s boy band needs four or five friends in one neutral palette but different outfits. One wears an all-white suit, another a leather-look jacket, a third a sleeveless top and a fourth an oversized button-down with baggy pants. Chunky sneakers, chain necklaces, tinted glasses and headset microphones go on everyone. The hair is heavily styled with curtains, frosted tips, spikes or a slick center part. Frosted tips are easy to fake with white or silver color spray on the very ends only. Keep makeup to groomed brows and shine-control powder for photos. Practice one synchronized pose or a short dance move, because that's what makes people believe you're a band.
9. Kurt Cobain Grunge Costume

A Kurt Cobain-inspired costume comes straight from the thrift store. Start with a faded graphic T-shirt under an oversized striped cardigan, then add distressed straight-leg jeans and worn canvas sneakers. A shoulder-length blond wig with a messy texture and round white or dark sunglasses do most of the work. Makeup is minimal, maybe a softly smudged brown liner. Carry an unplugged toy guitar or an empty guitar case. The usual mistake is clothes that are too clean and new. Pick a cardigan that's already pilled and stretched, and scuff new sneakers at the toes with fine sandpaper. A beaded necklace and a flannel tied at the waist add depth without adding bulk.
10. Courtney Love Grunge Glam Costume

Courtney Love-inspired grunge glam mixes delicate clothing with rough edges. Wear a satin or lace-trimmed babydoll dress over opaque tights, with a slightly oversized cardigan and sturdy black ankle boots. A messy blond wig with loose waves and a small rhinestone tiara or barrette sets the tone. The makeup should look deliberately imperfect but still neat: smudged black liner, mascara, pale powder and vivid red lipstick. Carry a toy guitar or a vintage-style microphone, and add a thin choker and a few mismatched clips. Red lipstick bleeds at the edges over a long night, so I fill the whole lip with liner first and blot between coats. The contrast between the sweet dress and heavy boots is the whole idea.
11. Wayne Campbell Costume

Wayne Campbell can come almost entirely from your closet. Wear a plain black T-shirt, relaxed blue jeans and black canvas sneakers. The black baseball cap needs a simple handmade white logo patch inspired by his TV show. I cut it from white felt and stitch it on, since fabric marker on a black cap barely shows. Use a long straight dark wig if your own hair doesn't match, and keep makeup to light brows and powder. Carry drumsticks, a toy microphone or a small cardboard TV frame. A plaid shirt tied around the waist adds interest. Practice an enthusiastic thumbs-up for the photos.
12. Garth Algar Costume

Garth Algar is soft layers, big glasses and messy hair. Begin with a blue plaid flannel over a graphic T-shirt, faded straight-leg jeans and black or white sneakers. A long blond wig with plenty of volume, teased slightly at the crown and loose at the ends, gets the hair. Large black glasses are essential, and frames without lenses are fine. Keep makeup understated with pale neutral tones. Carry drumsticks or a light toy drum pad on a strap. He works alone but is even better beside a Wayne. A teased wig sheds when you brush it out later, so tease only the top layer and leave the underside smooth. Cotton flannel breathes far better than synthetic in a crowd.
13. Mia Wallace Pulp Fiction Costume

Mia Wallace's black-and-white outfit is simple and sharp. Wear a crisp white button-down with slim black ankle pants and low black flats, choosing an opaque shirt with a fitted camisole underneath. The sleek black bob with blunt bangs is the most recognizable detail, so spend your money there. I trim wig bangs dry, a little at a time, with the wig on a head form, because they always look longer than they are. Porcelain-finish makeup, precise black liner, mascara and deep red lipstick finish her. Carry a faux dance trophy or a retro diner menu, keep jewelry to small studs and roll the sleeves neatly to the forearm. With no heavy layers or tricky shoes, it's an easy indoor costume.
14. Vincent Vega Pulp Fiction Costume

Vincent Vega is the natural partner for Mia, or a good solo pick. Start with a black suit, a white dress shirt and a narrow black tie, with polished black shoes and dark socks. A shoulder-length dark wig worn straight, with the front tucked behind the ears, is the signature. Keep makeup to powder and lightly defined brows. Carry a faux dance trophy or a diner takeout bag rather than anything weapon-related, and add a simple black watch. A thrifted suit is fine and doesn't need perfect tailoring. The detail that helps most is the tuck: pin the wig's front sections behind the ears with bobby pins, or they fall forward every time you move.
15. Forrest Gump Running Costume

Forrest Gump's running outfit is comfortable and easy to spot. Wear red athletic shorts, tall white socks, a pale yellow T-shirt and a light blue running jacket, with white running shoes. A long brown wig and a full beard come next. Secure the beard with skin-safe adhesive, and patch-test the adhesive on your inner arm the day before. Add a red baseball cap and a little tan bronzer with soft brown shading. Carry a cardboard road sign or an empty retro water bottle. The sportswear makes this a good choice for outdoor events. If a long beard feels hot or itchy, go shorter; the cap, jacket, socks and running pose still carry it.
16. Ace Ventura Costume

Ace Ventura is all bold pattern. Wear a white tank top under an open tropical-print shirt with red-and-black striped pants or other bright trousers, plus black lace-up boots. A short dark wig styled into a tall swooped pompadour is the hard part. Ordinary gel won't hold synthetic fiber that high, so I back-comb the front and set it with strong hairspray, or buy a wig that comes pre-styled. Expressive brows and matte powder keep the face clean. Carry a plush animal or a light pet-carrier prop, and add a costume ring. Choose flexible pants and a breathable shirt, because the goofy physical poses are half the fun.
17. Romy And Michele Costume

Romy and Michele need two shiny mini dresses in contrasting colors, one bright blue and one metallic pink. Keep the shapes simple and fitted with comfortable coverage, and add platform heels or chunky sandals. Style one blond look sleek and half-up, the other in soft curls. Late-90s glamour means frosted shadow, thin liner, glossy lips and glowing cheeks. Carry small silver handbags and handmade reunion name tags, with rhinestone earrings and matching clips. Shiny stretch fabric shows every line underneath, so a smooth slip helps both dresses hang right. Stand side by side and practice one synchronized pose for photos.
18. Dumb And Dumber Tuxedo Costume

Dumb and Dumber turns one famous movie moment into a bright two-person costume: an orange tuxedo and a powder-blue tuxedo. Each person needs matching pants, a ruffled shirt, a vest, a bow tie and a top hat, with dress shoes or sneakers covered in removable fabric of the right color. Short wigs in neat bowl cuts, one dark and one lighter, finish the heads. Keep makeup natural and carry matching canes made from light cardboard or plastic. Colored tuxedos are rare on thrift racks, and dyeing a polyester suit at home almost never comes out even, so I'd rent or buy a costume version. Head-to-toe orange and blue with the hats is what tells the story.
19. Men In Black Duo Costume

Men in Black is sleek, comfortable and appropriate almost anywhere. Both people wear black suits, white shirts, narrow black ties, dark socks and polished black shoes, plus rectangular black sunglasses and small wired earpieces. Hair should be tidy, natural or a short dark wig, with matte skin and groomed brows. One person carries a silver memory-wiping device made from painted cardboard, the other a plain black folder. Serious faces and matching posture are the joke, so rehearse them. Thrifted suits are fine, and black sneakers can replace dress shoes for walking. Dark glasses indoors at night are hard to see through, so choose a lighter tint you can actually navigate in.
20. Neo Matrix Costume

Neo's late-90s look comes down to a long black coat and narrow sunglasses. Wear a fitted black mock-neck shirt with straight black pants, then a floor-length faux-leather or light fabric coat and sturdy black lace-up boots. Short dark hair, neat and slightly textured, or a close-cropped wig, goes with matte makeup, defined brows and a little gray shading around the eyes. Carry an old computer disk or a card printed with green digital patterns, and leave out action props. A coat that touches the floor catches on stairs and car doors, so I'd hem it to the ankle. Check that it has room in the shoulders so you can sit and move.
21. Jurassic Park Explorer Costume

The Jurassic Park explorer is practical outdoor clothing. Wear khaki shorts, a pale button-down and a utility vest, with hiking boots, tall socks and a wide-brimmed hat. Hair can go in a loose ponytail, under the hat or in natural waves. Waterproof mascara, bronzer and lip balm keep the makeup outdoorsy. Pin a handmade park badge to the vest and carry a map, binoculars or a plush dinosaur, with a red bandana at the neck or on a backpack for color. Vest pockets sag and pull the whole vest crooked when they're stuffed, so keep them light. The proportions scale easily, so adults, teens and kids can all wear a version, and it makes a good family theme.
22. Kelly Kapowski Saved By The Bell Costume

Kelly Kapowski's style is cheerful 90s high school. Layer a bright cropped sweatshirt over a longer fitted tank, with high-waisted acid-wash jeans or a colorful skater skirt, white crew socks and clean canvas sneakers. Long brunette hair goes into a big high side ponytail with an oversized scrunchie. A side ponytail droops within a couple of hours unless you anchor it with two elastics, the second hidden under the scrunchie. Pink blush, blue or lavender shadow, mascara and glossy lips do the face. Carry a school folder covered in geometric shapes or a handmade diner menu, and add big hoops and a plastic watch. Saturated teal, purple, coral or yellow keeps it 90s rather than just casual.
23. Zack Morris Saved By The Bell Costume

Zack Morris mixes preppy clothing with relaxed 90s details. Wear light-wash jeans, a bright graphic T-shirt and an open patterned button-down, with a color-block jacket if it's cool and white high-tops. A short blond wig goes into a big side-swept shape, and natural makeup with a little matte powder is plenty. The prop that matters is the oversized cell phone. I make it from a block of light foam painted gray, with a short dowel for the antenna, so it's comfortable to hold up all night. Add a simple watch and a school backpack. He pairs naturally with Kelly but works alone too, and loud prints with a confident grin do the rest.
24. Daria Morgendorffer Costume

Daria is one of the easiest and most comfortable cartoon costumes here. Wear a green utility-style jacket over an orange T-shirt, a black pleated skirt and opaque black tights, with sturdy black lace-up boots. A straight brown wig cut near the shoulders with a smooth center part and round black glasses are the key details, and makeup stays minimal. Carry a notebook or a paperback, and keep a dry, unimpressed face in every photo. The glasses should be big and very round. Most costume glasses are too small for her, so look for large round frames and pop out the lenses if they're tinted. Every piece rewears separately afterward.
25. Doug Funnie Costume

Doug Funnie's outfit makes a playful solo costume for anyone. Start with a white T-shirt under a green sweater vest, then loose tan shorts, white crew socks and red-and-white sneakers. A short light-brown wig with a few strands standing up at the crown finishes the head, and a little hair wax holds those strands better than spray. Makeup can stay natural, though a soft cartoon nose outline is a fun touch that doesn't cover the face. Carry a journal labeled with his name or a light toy banjo, and add a name tag so younger guests get it. Keep the vest bright and the shorts a little oversized so the proportions feel animated.
26. Rugrats Group Costume

A Rugrats group lets four or more friends wear colorful, comfy basics. One person wears a blue cropped T-shirt, white diaper-style shorts over leggings and round glasses. Another takes a purple dress, striped leggings, pigtails and a big bow. A third wears a turquoise dress with upright orange pigtails, and a fourth a blue shirt with green shorts. Playful wigs, rosy cheeks and sneakers or soft ankle boots tie them together, with baby bottles, plush dinosaurs or toy blocks as props. Adults should adapt with full-coverage shorts, skirts and fitted layers instead of literal baby clothes. Upright pigtails need support, so I braid craft wire into each one and bend it into shape.
27. Powerpuff Girls Group Costume

The Powerpuff Girls need three matching dress shapes in pink, blue and green. Each sleeveless or short-sleeved dress gets a bold black stripe around the waist, with white knee socks, black Mary Janes and a hair accessory. Pink gets a long orange wig with a red bow, blue gets blond pigtails, and green a short black bob. Bright pastel shadow, defined lashes and rosy cheeks suit all three. Carry star-shaped bags or toy phones. The waist stripe is easiest as wide black grosgrain ribbon stitched on flat, which stays straight where a painted stripe wobbles. Same silhouette, different color and hair is the whole formula.
28. Sailor Moon Costume

Sailor Moon starts with a white sailor-style bodice, a blue pleated skirt and the red bows at chest and back. Add white elbow gloves, a gold tiara and red knee boots with a manageable heel. The long blond wig goes into two high buns with flowing pigtails. That style is heavy, so I'd buy a wig sold with clip-on buns and tails rather than trying to build it from a single wig. Bright makeup with blue liner, pink blush, curled lashes and a glossy rose lip suits her. Carry a moon wand cut from light foam or cardboard, and add star earrings and red hair accents. Make sure the bodice fits securely and wear shorts under the skirt.
29. Power Rangers Group Costume

Five friends, five colors: red, pink, blue, yellow and black. Each person wears a fitted long-sleeve top with matching pants or leggings, a white diamond-pattern chest panel, a white belt, gloves and calf-high boots. Helmets only make sense with clear vision openings; otherwise skip them and style the hair neatly with color-matched eye makeup. Carry communicator wristbands, not weapons. White sneakers are a safer swap for tall boots outdoors. I cut the diamond panel as one piece of white stretch fabric and stitch it down, which stays flatter on a moving body than strips of tape. Smaller groups can pick just their favorite colors and keep the design.
30. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Group Costume

Four friends become the Turtles with green tops, green pants and brown foam shell backpacks. Add yellow chest panels and give each person a blue, purple, red or orange eye mask. Green beanies or face-safe makeup carry the color over the head without a restrictive mask, and brown knee pads, elbow pads, belts and lace-up boots finish each outfit. Carry pizza boxes for laughs instead of weapons. I shape the shells from light cardboard or thin foam and strap them on like a backpack, so you can still lean back in a chair. Masks tied too tight bring on a headache by mid-evening, so cut the tails long and tie them loosely.
31. Space Jam Basketball Costume

A Space Jam-inspired basketball costume is sporty enough for an active party. Wear a white jersey with blue-and-red trim over a fitted T-shirt or tank, matching loose shorts, tall white socks and classic basketball sneakers. Hair can stay natural or go under a secure short wig. Keep makeup minimal and sweat-resistant, with waterproof mascara and lip balm. Carry a basketball or a plush rabbit, and add a blue wristband and a few star decals on the cheeks. A fully pumped basketball is awkward to hold for hours, and letting some air out makes it much easier to tuck under an arm. Friends can join in matching jerseys or simple animal-inspired athletic outfits.
32. Carmen Sandiego Costume

Carmen Sandiego depends on the red coat and matching wide-brim hat. Wear a fitted black top with black trousers or leggings under the coat, and black ankle boots. A shoulder-length dark wig with soft curls, a few pieces framing the face under the hat, is right. Winged liner, warm blush and deep red lipstick suit her, and black leather-look gloves finish it. Carry a folded world map, a passport-style notebook or a small vintage suitcase. A floppy brim drops over your eyes, so look for a hat with a structured brim, or stitch millinery wire into the edge of a soft one. That red outer layer is what makes her recognizable from a distance.
33. Where’s Waldo Costume

Waldo takes only a few bold striped pieces. Wear a red-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt, relaxed blue jeans and brown lace-up boots or comfortable walking shoes, then add the red-and-white knit beanie with its pompom and round black glasses. Use a short dark wig if you need one, with a little hair showing below the hat. Carry a light walking cane or a book of busy picture pages, and a red crossbody bag for your things. The stripes need to be wide and even; narrow stripes look like a generic sailor top. It's comfortable for a long night, and it pairs nicely with Carmen Sandiego as a duo of famously hard-to-find characters.
34. Beanie Baby Costume

A giant Beanie Baby is a monochrome animal outfit plus an oversized heart-shaped tag. Choose an easy animal, like a brown bear or a blue dog, and wear a soft hoodie with matching joggers, a rounded ear headband, gloves and sneakers. Tuck the hair neatly under the ears and add a small nose, whiskers and rosy cheeks with face makeup. The red heart tag is the giveaway. Make it from light foam or cardboard, write a funny name and birthday inside, and attach it near the shoulder with ribbon. A tag hung from one point spins and flips, so I punch two holes and tie it on flat. Skip the full mask so your face shows.
35. Tamagotchi Costume

A Tamagotchi turns the 90s virtual pet into a wearable egg. Cut an oversized egg shape from lightweight foam board, paint it pastel pink, purple or teal, and add a screen with a cheerful pixel creature. Wear a fitted top and leggings in a matching color underneath, with white sneakers, scrunchies and small pixel earrings. A high ponytail or space buns suit the hair, and pastel shadow, glossy lips and tiny square accents near the eyes do the face. Large foam circles make the buttons. Foam board tears at the strap points, so I glue a square of card behind each one to spread the load. Keep the egg short enough to sit down in.
36. Furby Costume

A Furby costume is a fuzzy dress, tunic or hoodie over matching leggings. Choose gray, white, pink or black faux fur with a soft contrasting belly panel, and make the big ears from felt on a comfortable headband. Two textured buns or a short fluffy wig finish the hair. Put the oversized eyes on the headband above the forehead, never over your own eyes. Pastel shadow, winged liner, rosy cheeks and a small painted beak around the lips do the face, with furry leg warmers and platform sneakers below. Faux fur is warm, so I make the body from a thin, short-pile fur over a breathable cotton layer. Long-pile fur in a heated room gets unbearable fast.
37. Troll Doll Costume

A Troll doll costume is built around tall, bright hair. Wear a fitted nude-tone or pastel long-sleeve top with matching leggings, a colorful felt gem stitched to the center of the stomach and flats or sneakers in the same base color. The wig should stand straight up in hot pink, electric blue, neon green or purple. A tall wig needs support: I pin it over a wig cap and a hidden headband, and back-comb the base so the height doesn't collapse. Bold matching brows, shimmer shadow, rosy cheeks and glossy lips suit it. Carry a small comb or a glittery drawstring bag. For a group, give each person a different hair color and gem.
38. Blockbuster Employee Costume

A 90s video-store employee needs a blue polo, khaki pants and black sneakers. Add a handmade yellow-and-blue name tag and a simple black belt. A high ponytail with a scrunchie, curtain bangs or a short center part suits the hair, with casual makeup. The props are what explain the costume, so carry an empty plastic video case, a handwritten rental card or a stack of cardboard movie boxes. Check the house and family cupboards for an old VHS case before you make one. A blue lanyard and a small waist pouch add period detail, and leave the phone in your pocket for photos. It's cheap, comfortable and safe for school, work or a last-minute party.
39. 90s Raver Costume

A 90s raver costume should be neon and easy to dance in. Pair wide-leg pants with a fitted holographic or bright T-shirt, and layer a mesh top over a full-coverage tank for texture. Platform sneakers, plastic bead bracelets, a mini backpack and tinted oval glasses finish it, while space buns with colorful clips and a few temporary bright extensions do the hair. Graphic pastel liner, face-safe star decals and glossy lips give the UV feel without needing a blacklight. Carry glow bracelets or a small folding fan. Clip-in extensions tug on fine hair over a long night, so place them under the buns where the hair is thickest. Lime, orange, aqua, silver and purple make the palette.
40. 90s Hip-Hop Costume

A 90s hip-hop costume starts with oversized denim, bold sportswear and statement accessories. Wear baggy jeans, or overalls with one strap down, over a bright T-shirt or sweatshirt, with a color-block windbreaker, high-tops and a backward cap. Braids, a high ponytail or a shaped short cut all suit it, with defined brows, brown liner, matte skin and neutral gloss. Add hoops, a chunky costume chain and tinted sunglasses, and carry a retro portable radio or a toy microphone. Baggy jeans need a belt that really holds, and anything dragging under the heel should be hemmed so you don't trip. Confident poses and layered proportions finish the look.
Bobs, Bangs and Buns on a Budget Wig
Half the characters here are really about the hair: Rachel's layers, Mia's blunt bob, Cher's smooth blond, the Sailor Moon buns and the Troll's tower. Inexpensive wigs can manage all of them, but they rarely look right straight out of the bag.
- Shake the wig out and leave it overnight on a head form or a tall bottle so the packing creases drop.
- Trim bangs dry, with the wig on, a little at a time. Snip with the scissor points angled up into the hair for a softer edge.
- Thin out a heavy, helmet-like wig by cutting a few wefts from the inside at the back of the head.
- Wear a wig cap and pin through it at the temples and the nape. A wig that shifts is what gives it away.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from hair dryers, curling irons, candles and the oven door. Unless the label says heat-safe, the fiber frizzes or melts.
Afterward, store the wig in a hairnet inside its bag and it will be ready for another party next year.
The Hair Usually Decides the Costume
The 90s left plenty to borrow from: movies, TV shows, music, cartoons, toys and its own loud fashion. Choose a character with clear colors and build the look from head to toe. Hair, makeup, shoes and one obvious prop turn basic thrifted clothing into a convincing costume. Solo characters suit last-minute plans, while duos and groups make the bigger splash in photos. Put secure accessories, comfortable shoes, breathable layers and clear vision ahead of everything else. Preppy plaid, baggy denim, cartoon colors and fuzzy toys all come together once the small details are right.
