Max Goof is a gift of a character to dress, because his whole look is ordinary 1990s teenage clothing: a red short-sleeve hoodie over a black turtleneck, loose jeans and a backward cap. Add the skateboarding, the Powerline obsession and that awkward-but-trying-to-be-cool attitude, and you have a costume you can mostly find in a thrift store or your own closet. A black floppy-ear headband and a dot of black on the nose turn even the simplest version into Max rather than a guy in a hoodie. Below are forty head-to-toe takes, from the concert and college looks to skating, family and road-trip versions, for different ages, budgets and weather.

Floppy Ears That Hang Right Under a Backward Cap
The ears are what separate Max from any teenager in a red hoodie, and they're also the piece most homemade versions get wrong. They should hang down past the jaw, swing a little when you turn and sit behind the cap rather than poking out the top.
- Cut each ear as a long teardrop from black felt, roughly the length of your hand plus a few fingers. Glue or stitch two layers together so the tips don't curl.
- Fold the narrow top of each ear around a thin plastic headband and glue it down, placing the ears just above where your own ears sit.
- Put the headband on first, then the backward cap over it. The cap's strap holds the band in place, and the ears drop naturally from under the edge.
- Walk around for ten minutes and look in a mirror. If the ears flip forward, trim a little from the top fold so they hang further back.
Faux fur ears look softer but they shed onto the black turtleneck and get hot quickly. For a long night, felt is the better fabric.
1. Classic Max Goof Costume With Red Hoodie

Start here if you want the version people name first. A bright red or burnt-orange short-sleeve hoodie goes over a fitted black turtleneck, with relaxed light-wash jeans in a straight or slightly baggy cut. Clean white sneakers keep it wearable; oversized cartoonish brown shoes push it toward the animated look. White gloves, a black floppy-ear headband and a blue cap turned backward come next, with black hair fluffed out under the cap. Getting the turtleneck right matters more than people expect. A loose crewneck underneath looks like a layering accident, while a snug black turtleneck gives the hoodie that clean cartoon outline. A dot of water-based black face paint on the nose replaces any mask, and a skateboard or folded road map is the easiest prop.
2. Powerline Max Goof Costume With Yellow Jumpsuit

The Powerline concert scene gives you Max at his boldest. A yellow jumpsuit is the base, or a fitted yellow top with comfortable yellow pants, plus an orange circular emblem on the chest in felt or removable fabric vinyl. Orange wrist cuffs and a narrow belt make it stage-ready, and black ankle boots, black gloves and slim black sunglasses finish the outfit. The hair goes tall and swept back, with a black wig or temporary styling product. Yellow is the hardest color to buy in a matching top and pants, since two yellows from different shops almost never agree, so I'd buy both from the same range or go with a jumpsuit. Keep the face clean apart from the black nose and maybe a little gold shimmer by the eyes, and carry a light toy microphone.
3. Max Goof Road Trip Costume With Jeans

The road-trip Max is the relaxed one, straight out of the car. A red short-sleeve hoodie over a black long-sleeve shirt, faded jeans with rolled cuffs and white high-tops you can actually walk in. A backward blue cap sits over the black floppy ears, with black face paint on the nose and the eyebrows brushed upward with a clear gel for that expressive look. For the prop, a folded paper map, a small travel bag or a handmade destination sign, with a few souvenir-style patches on the bag. Roll the cuffs twice and press them flat; a single loose roll slides down by the end of the evening. It suits school events and family groups doing the whole road trip.
4. Skateboard Max Goof Costume With Knee Pads

Skater Max is the sporty version. An oversized red T-shirt goes over a fitted black long-sleeve top, with loose jeans or knee-length denim shorts depending on the weather, white skate sneakers, red socks and light knee pads. Then the backward blue cap, the ear headband and tousled black hair, with a black nose and an otherwise fresh face. Carry a skateboard with removable decals, but check first whether the venue allows one; many parties and schools don't want a board in a packed room. Knee pads strapped over jeans tend to slip down the shin, so I put them on over the shorts version or tighten the straps a notch more than feels natural.
5. Fishing Trip Max Goof Costume With Vest

A fishing-trip Max is made for a father-and-son pair. Keep his black turtleneck and red hoodie and add a lightweight tan fishing vest over the top, with loose jeans, thick white socks and sturdy brown hiking sneakers. The ears and backward cap stay instead of a proper fishing hat, which keeps him recognizable. A rounded black nose and slightly raised brows. The vest pockets are where the fun is: folded maps, snack wrappers, colorful bobbers and a small plush fish. Fill them with light things only, because a vest with heavy pockets pulls forward and drags the hoodie out of shape. A child-sized net works if the event allows it, and the whole idea gets funnier standing next to someone dressed as Goofy.
6. Camping Max Goof Costume With Plaid Shirt

For a cold night, the camping Max works better than any hoodie on its own. A black thermal shirt goes under an open red and navy plaid flannel, with relaxed jeans, warm hiking socks and lace-up trail shoes. Tie the red hoodie around the waist so his signature color still shows. Backward navy cap, ears, messy black hair, a black nose and a bit of rosy color on the cheeks. A rolled sleeping mat, an enamel-style camp mug or a flashlight with the batteries taken out is plenty. Leave anything big at home if you'll be indoors. He should look a bit reluctant to be there, which suits the layered, practical clothes.
7. Possum Park Max Goof Costume With Souvenir Shirt

Possum Park is the roadside attraction from the film, and a souvenir version of Max is a nice change from the standard hoodie. Draw a cartoon possum onto a red T-shirt with fabric marker or paint, then layer it over a fitted black long-sleeve shirt with light-blue jeans, white sneakers, the ears and the backward blue cap. Paint the nose black and give him a flat, unimpressed expression with softly defined brows. A paper wristband, a small plush possum and a felt souvenir pennant explain the joke in photos. I'd practice the possum drawing on scrap paper first and keep it simple, because a hand-drawn design on a shirt can't be erased.
8. Max Goof Map Reader Costume With Travel Bag

This version is built around one big prop: the map. An orange-red short-sleeve hoodie goes over a black mock-neck, with faded jeans and white sneakers, and the ears sit under a backward navy cap with a few black strands showing at the front. A rounded black nose, plus white gloves for a more animated feel. A canvas crossbody bag with handmade destination patches carries the rest. Buy a real paper road map if you can find one; a printed sheet doesn't fold or crumple the same way, and the crumpling is half the joke. Hold it upside down in photos for Max's frustrated-teen face. No sewing at all.
9. Powerline Fan Max Goof Costume With Concert Shirt

Not every Powerline idea needs the full yellow suit. A Max who's simply a fan wears a black T-shirt with a handmade orange and yellow music emblem under his open red short-sleeve hoodie, plus baggy jeans and white sneakers. Tousled black hair, the ears and the backward cap stay, with the black nose doing the identifying. Paper concert wristbands and a ticket-style card or small poster are the props, with slim black sunglasses hooked on the collar. The emblem reads best when it's big, at least the width of a hand, and cut from felt or iron-on vinyl rather than drawn. It's an easy, casual option for warm indoor parties.
10. Concert Dancer Max Goof Costume With Black Boots

If you plan to dance, skip the jumpsuit. A fitted yellow top and matching jogger-style pants move far better, with a big felt orange emblem on the chest and orange cuffs at the wrists. Black ankle boots, black gloves and narrow sunglasses give the concert look. The ears attach discreetly at the sides of a swept-back black wig, with a black nose and a little gold shimmer. Carry a light microphone and practice one big stage pose for photos. Felt emblems glued to a stretchy top crack and lift as soon as you bend, so on a knit I stitch around the edge with a running stitch instead.
11. School Hallway Max Goof Costume With Backpack

Picture Max walking the school corridor before the big performance. A red short-sleeve hoodie over a black turtleneck, straight-leg jeans and slightly scuffed white sneakers, with the backward blue cap over the ears and deliberately messy hair. Black paint on the nose, natural makeup elsewhere. The backpack carries this one. Cover a canvas pack with removable music pins, skateboard patches and colorful key chains, and slip a rolled notebook or a handmade concert flyer into the side pocket. White gloves are optional. Nothing here is bulky, so it suits a school dress-up day where you're in costume from the bus to the last bell.
12. Summer Max Goof Costume With Denim Shorts

Hot weather calls for denim shorts instead of long jeans. A lightweight black crewneck tee goes under a sleeveless red hoodie, with white crew socks and breathable white sneakers to keep the 1990s proportions. The backward blue cap, ears and a soft black nose do the character work. Wear your own hair loose or choose a short wig that won't trap heat. A small skateboard, a water bottle or a bright waist pack. Leave the gloves off; white gloves in the sun just get sweaty and grubby. Cutting the sleeves off an old red hoodie yourself is the quickest way to make the sleeveless version, and sweatshirt knit doesn't fray.
13. Denim Jacket Max Goof Costume With Red Shirt

A blue denim jacket gives Max's colors a streetwear twist and makes a good cold-weather version. Wear it open over a bright red hoodie or a red crewneck layered on a black mock neck, with darker jeans for a subtle double-denim effect and white high-tops. Ears under a backward navy cap, temporary black color for the fluffy hair, a rounded black nose and softly defined brows. Roll the jacket sleeves so the black base layer shows, which keeps the red, black and blue balanced. A skateboard or a canvas messenger bag with music patches finishes it. The jacket is warm and it's real clothing, not thin costume fabric.
14. Varsity Max Goof Costume With Red Jacket

A varsity Max turns him into a school-spirit character. Choose a red varsity jacket with black sleeves and simple letter patches, worn open over a black turtleneck so the black still shows, with light-wash jeans and white sneakers. The backward blue cap, the ear headband, tousled black hair and a black nose, plus white gloves if you want it more animated. Carry a backpack, a yearbook or a rolled pennant. If you're borrowing the jacket or want to wear it again, attach felt letters with fabric-safe tape or safety pins on the inside; glue on wool or felt can leave a mark when it comes off. Good for pep rallies and spirit weeks as well as Halloween.
15. Rainy Day Max Goof Costume With Red Jacket

Rain doesn't have to hide the costume. A lightweight red rain jacket with a hood goes over a fitted black shirt, with water-resistant blue pants or cuffed jeans and white waterproof sneakers or short rain boots. The backward navy cap and ear headband need hidden bobby pins in wet wind, and the felt ears will droop once they're soaked, so I give them a spray of fabric water repellent the day before. Use waterproof black face paint for the nose and clear brow gel to keep the hair and eyebrows in place. A compact blue umbrella, a water-resistant crossbody bag with a skateboard patch and a map poking out of it. It still reads as Max in a downpour.
16. Winter Max Goof Costume With Red Puffer Vest

Cold nights are easier with layers. A black turtleneck goes under a red puffer vest, with relaxed jeans, thick white socks and insulated white or gray high-tops. Wear a navy knit cap backward, or a blue baseball cap over a thin black beanie; attaching the ears to that lower beanie layer keeps them secure even when you take the cap off. A temporary black nose, white knit gloves and lightly flushed cheeks. Carry a plaid scarf or a small thermos. The one rule: buy a vivid red vest, not burgundy. Muted reds read as a generic puffer from a few feet away. It's a solid choice for parades and chilly trick-or-treating.
17. College Max Goof Costume With Green Sweater

College Max is the quieter, grown-up version from the sequel. A relaxed green sweater goes over a black crewneck, with loose khakis or medium-wash jeans and white skate sneakers. The backward blue cap, ears and messy black hair tie the older outfit back to the character, and the black nose stays subtle. A canvas book bag with a skateboard key chain, a notebook and a handmade college pennant. Push the sweater sleeves up a little. If you want a thin line of his red to show, wear a red shirt underneath with the collar peeking out. Adults tend to like this one because it looks like ordinary clothes at a glance.
18. Campus Max Goof Costume With Letterman Jacket

For a sportier campus look, a green and white letterman jacket goes over a black T-shirt, with tan chinos, white crew socks and red and white sneakers. A short black wig styled in loose upward points sits under a backward navy cap, with the ears secured beneath it. Black nose, natural skin. Carry a messenger bag of notebooks and a skateboard under one arm. Any campus patch should be removable felt rather than permanent adhesive if the jacket is borrowed. To get those wig points to hold, I twist small sections with a little hairspray and let them dry before putting the cap on, since the cap flattens anything still damp.
19. X Games Max Goof Costume With Sports Jersey

The extreme-sports Max swaps the hoodie for a bright red sports jersey over a fitted black long-sleeve top. Add loose charcoal athletic pants or durable jeans, red knee pads and white skate shoes. A matte blue helmet goes over the ear headband, with the ears hanging below the straps where they won't interfere with the buckle. Black paint on the nose, hair tucked away. Bring the skateboard only where it's allowed; otherwise a cardboard winner's badge or a competition pass does the same job. Big handmade numbers on the jersey make it read from across a room. Check that the helmet still fastens snugly with the headband underneath.
20. Skate Competition Max Goof Costume With Helmet

Here the protective gear becomes part of the costume. A red sleeveless hoodie over a breathable black athletic shirt, with baggy knee-length shorts, red and black knee and elbow pads, white crew socks and flat white skate sneakers. A blue helmet replaces the cap, with the floppy ears attached beneath it. Draw the nose with skin-safe makeup and style any visible hair into short, uneven points. A board with removable orange and blue graphics, and a paper competitor number pinned to the hoodie. Teens and actual skaters like this one, since the pads and helmet are real gear they already own.
21. Cafe Worker Max Goof Costume With Apron

A cafe-worker Max is funny and very easy. A red polo over a thin black turtleneck, straight-leg jeans, a short green or tan waist apron and nonslip black sneakers. The backward cap with the ears underneath, a few black strands around the forehead, a small black nose and lifted brows. Write "Max" on a handmade name tag and pin a few music badges on the apron. For photos, carry an empty tray with a paper cup stuck to it with a dab of putty so it doesn't slide off. Nothing bulky, which makes it one of the better choices for a workplace party.
22. Disco Max Goof Costume With Flared Pants

Disco Max is an odd idea that works at a dance party. A bright red collared shirt over a black mock neck, dark blue flared pants and white platform-style sneakers that are stable enough to walk in. Keep the backward navy cap, the ears and a fluffy black wig so he's still Max, with a rounded black nose and a touch of silver shimmer around the eyes. A yellow belt and a small mirrored microphone add the retro feel, and colorful wristbands nod to his love of performing without the full concert suit. Flared pants drag on the floor in flat shoes, so hem them for the platforms you'll actually wear.
23. Gamer Max Goof Costume With Headset

A gamer Max is a modern twist that keeps his colors. An oversized red hoodie goes over a fitted black tee, with loose blue joggers and cushioned white sneakers. The gaming headset sits over the backward blue cap, and this is where it gets fiddly: the band of a headset flattens floppy ears against the head, so attach them slightly lower on the headband than usual. A tousled black wig and the nose. Carry a light controller with the batteries out, or clip a pixel-style key chain to a crossbody bag. White fingerless gloves give a cartoon touch while keeping your fingers free.
24. Pajama Max Goof Costume With Slippers

Comfort comes first in the pajama Max. A red long-sleeve pajama top with black piping, loose blue plaid pajama pants, soft white socks and brown dog-shaped slippers or plain cushioned house shoes. Instead of a cap, wear a floppy blue sleep cap over the ear headband, with messy hair and a small dot of black on the nose. Carry a light pillow with removable music notes or a plush alarm clock, and add a red robe for warmth. Slippers are fine indoors and miserable outside; on wet grass they soak through in minutes. Save this for indoor parties and pajama days.
25. Beach Max Goof Costume With Board Shorts

Beach Max keeps the red, black and blue but strips it down for warm weather. A red sleeveless hoodie over a black tank, blue board shorts with a subtle geometric print and white slip-on sneakers or secure sport sandals. The backward blue cap over the ears, waterproof black nose makeup and short tousled hair that copes with wind. A rolled striped towel, a bright beach bag or a small foam bodyboard. Hang black sunglasses from the hoodie neckline. Loose flip-flops are a bad idea if there's much walking, since they slap and slip by the second hour.
26. Athletic Max Goof Costume With Track Pants

The athletic Max is built from a red track jacket with black sleeve panels over a black performance shirt, with blue or navy track pants, white running shoes and red crew socks. The backward blue cap over the ear headband, hair in soft upward points. Use sweat-resistant black makeup on the nose, since ordinary face paint runs as soon as you warm up. White fingerless gloves, a sweatband and a small gym bag with a skateboard patch, plus a water bottle as the prop. It's breathable and flexible, so it works for active events while still reading as Max in full-length photos.
27. Halloween Max Goof Costume With Orange Hoodie

A seasonal Max swaps the red for pumpkin orange without turning scary. Wear an orange short-sleeve hoodie over a black and gray striped long-sleeve shirt, faded jeans, orange socks and white high-tops. The ears go under a navy backward cap, with a fluffy wig or temporary black color, a rounded black nose and a few tiny orange freckles. A fabric treat bag with music notes and skateboard shapes, plus a black denim vest for warmth. Temporary black hair spray rubs off onto collars and cap linings, so let it dry fully and put the hoodie on before you spray, not after. It's family friendly for school and neighborhood events.
28. Glam Max Goof Costume With Sequin Jacket

The glam Max is a polished stage version. A cropped red sequin jacket over a sleek black mock neck, high-waisted dark blue trousers or fitted jeans and pointed white ankle boots. A black swept-back wig with long floppy ears placed neatly at the sides; a small navy cap clipped at an angle, or left off if it fights the hair. A smooth black nose, defined brows and a little gold shimmer, plus white gloves, orange cuffs and a light microphone. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so wear the mock neck with long sleeves under the jacket. It suits costume contests and dressier Halloween parties.
29. Feminine Max Goof Costume With Denim Skirt

A feminine Max keeps all his details and swaps the trousers. A red cropped hoodie over a fitted black turtleneck, a high-waisted blue denim skirt with built-in shorts, white crew socks and white platform sneakers. The ears under a backward navy cap, with a high black ponytail or a short tousled wig. A rounded black nose, lifted brows and optional red lip balm. A small skateboard-shaped bag or canvas backpack with music patches, and white fingerless gloves. The built-in shorts are worth looking for; they make it practical for climbing stairs, sitting on the floor or trick-or-treating with family.
30. Plus Size Max Goof Costume With Relaxed Jeans

A plus-size Max doesn't need tight theatrical clothing, just good layers. A soft black mock-neck top under a roomy red short-sleeve hoodie, stretch-denim relaxed jeans and supportive white sneakers. An adjustable blue cap goes backward over a light ear headband; a wig is optional, and natural hair styled with volume works just as well. Water-based black on the nose and a crossbody bag with handmade music patches. Fingerless gloves are easier than full ones. Size the hoodie so the hem sits at the hip rather than the waist, which gives the cartoon's boxy outline and stops it riding up when you lift your arms.
31. Kids Max Goof Costume With Soft Hoodie

For children, every piece needs to be light, soft and easy to pull off. A soft red short-sleeve hoodie over a black cotton shirt, pull-on blue jeans or joggers and white hook-and-loop sneakers. Pick a flexible ear headband without hard edges and put a light blue cap backward over it. A small washable black nose dot is plenty; skip it if the child hates face paint. A foam skateboard or a skateboard-shaped treat bag gives the theme without heavy kit, and white cotton gloves are optional if they fit well. Kids tend to tear off a headband that pinches behind the ears, so try it on for ten minutes at home first.
32. Toddler Max Goof Costume With Blue Joggers

A toddler Max should feel like everyday clothing. A red pullover sweatshirt over a soft black bodysuit or T-shirt, loose blue joggers and white nonslip sneakers. A hood with floppy black ears sewn on stays put far better than a headband and cap on a toddler, who will pull both off within minutes. If the child is happy to wear one, attach a soft blue cap to the hood with temporary fabric fasteners. Skip complicated makeup, using a tiny washable nose mark only if appropriate. A plush skateboard toy or a soft music-note bag is enough of a prop. It keeps them warm, lets them crawl, and comes off quickly for diaper changes.
33. Max And Goofy Family Costume With Fishing Gear

Max and Goofy together are the father-and-son pair everyone gets. Max wears a red hoodie over a black shirt, loose jeans, white sneakers, the ears and a backward blue cap. The Goofy-inspired adult wears an orange sweater, blue pants, brown shoes, white gloves, a green vest and a tall green hat with long black ears. Both can add a black nose. Give them a plush fish, a folded map, a toy net and a light tackle-style box full of snacks. That tall green hat is floppy unless it's stiffened, so I'd stuff the crown with tissue or line it with a craft-foam tube. Warm, easy to walk in and ideal for a family party.
34. Max And Roxanne Couple Costume With Casual Clothes

For a nostalgic couple, Max wears his red short-sleeve hoodie, black turtleneck, light jeans, white sneakers, backward blue cap and ears. Roxanne wears a teal short-sleeve top, high-waisted blue shorts or a blue skirt, white flats and a shoulder-length reddish-brown wig. Both can wear soft ear headbands and small black nose details rather than masks. Max carries a concert ticket or a skateboard; Roxanne a small black shoulder bag with a handmade music emblem. Keep the clothes casual and very 1990s. A reddish-brown wig in a cheap synthetic often comes out too orange, so check the shade in daylight before the party, not under bedroom lights.
35. Max And P.J. Duo Costume With School Outfits

Max and P.J. make an easy best-friend duo. Max wears his red short-sleeve hoodie, black base layer, loose jeans, white sneakers, backward navy cap and floppy black ears. P.J. wears a blue short-sleeve jacket or overshirt over a lighter blue tee, relaxed brown pants and gray sneakers. Both add rounded ears and a subtle black nose. Max carries the skateboard, P.J. a backpack or notebook. Matching the jeans and shoe style is what puts them in the same school. It thrifts easily, works for friends of any gender and needs no masks or padding.
36. Goofy Movie Road Trip Group Costume

A road-trip group can cast Max, Goofy, Roxanne and a yellow-suited music star. Max wears the red hoodie, black shirt, jeans, white sneakers, ears and blue cap. The Goofy-inspired person takes the orange sweater, blue pants, green hat, vest and brown shoes. Roxanne wears a teal top, blue bottoms, white flats and reddish-brown hair. The performer wears a yellow jumpsuit with an orange emblem, black boots, swept-back black hair, gloves and sunglasses. Share out maps, travel bags, concert tickets and a plush fish. The same black nose on everyone ties the group together, and the color contrast gives you plenty of ways to line up for photos.
37. College Crew Max Goof Group Costume

A college crew suits a larger group that wants comfortable outfits with a light character link. Max wears a green sweater, black shirt, khakis, white skate shoes, ears and a backward cap. Friends join in campus clothing: a blue overshirt outfit, a green athletic uniform, a purple casual set and a red and white competition look. Everyone wears supportive sneakers and carries a different student item, from a backpack to a pennant or foam skateboard. Light makeup, with optional noses and expressive brows. Handmade campus patches in one shared design are the glue; when everyone's patch matches, even the loosest outfits look like a group. No one needs a wig.
38. Last Minute Max Goof Costume With Closet Basics

Short on time? Max can come straight out of most closets. Any bright red T-shirt over a fitted black long-sleeve shirt, relaxed jeans, white sneakers and a blue baseball cap worn backward. Cut two floppy ear shapes from black felt and glue them to a cheap fabric headband with fabric glue, letting it set for at least an hour before wearing. A washable black makeup pencil on the tip of the nose. A skateboard, backpack or folded map makes it obvious. If you don't have white gloves, leave them out rather than buying stiff novelty ones. You can put it together in one afternoon.
39. Thrifted Max Goof Costume With Oversized Layers

Thrifting suits Max, since 1990s casual clothes were already roomy. Look for a big red short-sleeve sweatshirt, a black turtleneck, faded straight-leg jeans and plain white sneakers. The colors matter more than exact copies. A secondhand navy cap worn backward, felt-scrap ears, temporary black spray or your own hair, a small black nose and an old backpack with paper music symbols. A used skateboard can be the prop if it's safe and allowed. Wash thrifted pieces before you wear them; secondhand jeans and sweatshirts often shrink a size on their first hot wash, so do it before you fit anything.
40. No Sew Max Goof Costume With Felt Ears

No sewing machine needed for this one. A red sleeveless hoodie over a fitted black shirt, loose jeans and white high-tops. Cut two long ears from black felt and fix them to a soft headband with fabric adhesive, then add the backward blue cap and style the visible hair into uneven points. Water-based face paint for the nose, and orange music symbols stuck to the hoodie with removable tape. A paper concert pass, a canvas backpack or a foam skateboard. Long felt ears hang better if you glue two layers together; a single layer curls at the tips after a few hours. It's cheap and easy to scale for adults, teens or kids.
Short-Sleeve Red Hoodies Are Rare, So Make One
The single hardest piece to find is the hoodie itself. Short-sleeve hooded sweatshirts aren't common in shops, and the reds on offer are often too dark or too pink. Making one from an ordinary hoodie is quicker than searching.
- Buy a long-sleeve red hoodie a size up for the relaxed fit, then cut the sleeves off just above the elbow. Sweatshirt knit doesn't fray, so the raw edge can stay as it is.
- For a neater finish, turn the cut edge under once and stitch it with a stretch or zigzag stitch so the hem doesn't pop when you bend your arm.
- If you only find pale or gray hoodies, a cotton-rich one takes fabric dye well. Polyester blends barely take ordinary dye and come out patchy, so check the label first.
- Look at the shade outdoors. A bright, slightly orange red reads as Max from a distance; burgundy and deep cherry read as just a hoodie.
Hair that survives the cap
Max's fluffy black hair has to show at the front and sides even with a cap on. Style it before the cap goes on and leave the front section out, then use a little hairspray only on those visible pieces. Temporary black color sprays work on lighter hair but rub off onto cap linings and collars, so spray with an old towel around your shoulders and let it dry completely before you dress.
Red Hoodie, Black Nose, Backward Cap
Every version here grows out of the same red, black and blue. The short-sleeve hoodie is the safe bet for recognition, the yellow Powerline suit is the bold stage choice, and the road-trip, college, skating, summer and winter takes cover almost any setting. Couples, families, kids, groups and plus-size wearers can all adjust the pieces and keep his personality. What makes it Max is the whole set, not one accessory: the ears, expressive hair, a little makeup, shoes you can walk in and one clear prop. Keep it all light enough to walk and dance in.
