A modern vampire look is the easiest Halloween costume I style, because most of it is already in people's closets. The trick is to keep it mysterious rather than theatrical. Velvet, satin, lace and faux leather carry the mood, and the colour range is narrow on purpose: black, burgundy, plum and midnight blue. After that, small things do the heavy lifting. A pointed boot, one antique-looking pendant, sleek hair and a dark lip turn ordinary pieces into a character. Every idea below can be styled masculine, feminine or somewhere between, and many will pass at a concert or a creative office in October. Each one comes with shoes, accessories, hair and makeup, so you can copy a whole look or borrow a single piece.

Three Signals That Say Vampire Without a Cape
When I style a modern vampire, I'm not looking for costume pieces. I'm looking for three signals, and once two of them are in place, people read the character from across the room.
- A long, dark vertical line. A floor-length coat, a column dress or a long vest stretches the body and gives you the sweep a cape used to.
- One old-world texture. Velvet, lace, brocade or satin hints at a character who has been around for a few centuries. One is enough; three looks like a costume shop.
- A pale face with a dark mouth. Cool-toned foundation and a deep berry or wine lip do more than any fang.
Everything else is supporting detail. Pointed boots, a single antique-style pendant and sleek hair are the touches I'd add next. If someone in your group asks what you're dressed as, add a darker lip before you add anything else.
1. Black Velvet Blazer Vampire Outfit

I'd start almost anyone on the velvet blazer, because it does the cape's job without the cape. Wear a fitted black one over a silky burgundy camisole and high-waisted black trousers, with pointed ankle boots and a small structured bag. Velvet shows every crease from sitting in a car, so hang the blazer up until you leave. A silver pendant, a couple of vintage-style rings and small garnet-coloured studs add enough detail. Slick the hair into a low bun or set controlled waves with a centre part. Keep the eyes soft, the foundation cool-toned and the lip a deep berry. It's polished enough for a dinner or an alternative office day.
2. Burgundy Satin Slip Dress Vampire Outfit

Burgundy satin gives you the richness without much effort. A midi or ankle-length slip dress with a fitted black mesh top underneath covers the arms and shoulders, and sheer tights with pointed slingbacks or sleek ankle boots finish the legs. Satin water-spots easily, so I'd keep a drink in the other hand and away from the skirt. A cropped black jacket adds warmth and still lets the dress show. Carry a small velvet bag, wear an antique-style pendant and a few fine silver rings. Loose dark waves feel romantic; a sleek ponytail pushes it modern. Smoky brown eyes, softly sculpted cheeks and a wine lip finish it.
3. Leather Trench Coat Vampire Outfit

A long faux-leather trench brings movement to a very plain base. Underneath, keep it simple: a fitted mock-neck top with straight black jeans or coated trousers, and square-toe boots with a modest heel you can actually walk in. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so if the night is warm I'd carry the coat for the walk and put it on once I arrive. Narrow sunglasses, silver hoops and a structured shoulder bag add a city feel. Hair goes glossy and straight, or up in a smooth high ponytail. Sharp black liner, lightly filled brows and a muted plum lip keep it powerful rather than costume-y.
4. Corporate Goth Suit Vampire Outfit

Sharp tailoring translates vampire elegance into office clothes better than anything else here. A charcoal or black double-breasted suit with a slightly nipped waist and full-length trousers is the base. Swap the white shirt for a wine-red satin blouse or a black high-neck knit; that one change is what reads as vampire. Loafers, pointed pumps or heeled ankle boots all work underneath. A slim leather belt, a rectangular watch, a structured tote and understated gemstone earrings keep it professional. Wear a neat low ponytail or soft brushed-out waves. For work, gray-brown shadow, mascara and a sheer berry lip are plenty.
5. Lace Blouse And Wide-Leg Pants Vampire Outfit

Lace looks old-fashioned until you pair it with clean, oversized trousers. Wear a high-collar black lace blouse over a simple opaque camisole, tuck it into burgundy or charcoal wide-leg trousers and belt it narrow at the waist. Check the lace in daylight before you commit; cheap lace can look shiny and plasticky up close. Platform loafers or pointed boots give the outfit weight at the bottom. Carry a structured top-handle bag and wear drop earrings with dark red stones. A loose low bun with a few face-framing strands keeps it soft. Taupe smoky eyes, gently highlighted skin and blackberry lipstick finish it.
6. Corset Top And Maxi Skirt Vampire Outfit

A corset top looks like fashion rather than costume when the rest of the outfit is calm. I'd choose a structured black top with wide straps, because thin straps tend to slip on a corset all night. Pair it with a dark plum satin or light pleated maxi skirt, and add a cropped tailored jacket if you want more coverage. Pointed knee-high boots run smoothly under the long hem. A compact shoulder bag, a silver cuff and a couple of layered pendants are enough jewellery. Wear a high polished ponytail or long loose waves. Smudged liner and a satin burgundy lip bring the vampire edge in.
7. Black Turtleneck And Leather Pants Vampire Outfit

If you want a vampire look you'll wear again in November, this is it. A fitted black turtleneck, straight faux-leather pants and a long charcoal wool coat make a sleek column, and pointed black boots carry that line down. Monochrome black needs texture to avoid looking flat, which is why the leather and wool matter more than the colour. One geometric bag, sculptural silver earrings and a single bold ring are the only extras. A sharp centre part with straight hair, or a tight low bun, keeps it clean. Softly smoked liner, cool contour and a rich red lip make it feel controlled and a little dangerous.
8. Red Monochrome Vampire Outfit

Head-to-toe red is a bold break from all the black. Pair a deep crimson blouse with matching tailored trousers and a slightly darker burgundy coat. Keeping the reds close but not identical is what stops it looking like a uniform; I hold the pieces together under indoor light before deciding. Black pointed boots and a compact black bag ground the colour. Gold or silver both work, as long as you keep it to simple hoops, a pendant and a few rings. Smooth waves or a slicked-back bun let the colour lead. Use brown-black liner and a muted berry lip rather than a bright red mouth, which would compete with the clothes.
9. Dark Academia Vampire Outfit

Dark academia layers make a bookish vampire. Start with a cream high-neck blouse, add a fitted burgundy waistcoat and a brown-black tweed blazer, then a pleated midi skirt. Opaque tights and lace-up Oxfords make it easy to walk in. Tweed and wool can itch through a thin blouse, so a fine cotton layer at the neck is worth having. Carry a structured leather satchel, and wear a small vintage-style watch with an oval pendant. Gather the hair into a low bun tied with black ribbon, or leave soft waves. Subtle smoky eyes, defined lashes and a stained berry lip keep the drama low and believable.
10. Streetwear Cargo Pants Vampire Outfit

Streetwear vampire relies on colour and texture, not any costume pieces. Black cargo pants, a fitted burgundy long-sleeve top and an oversized cropped bomber make the base, with platform sneakers or combat boots underneath. This is the version I'd recommend for anyone who'll be on their feet or on public transport all night. Add a black crossbody, a silver chain, stacked rings and narrow sunglasses. Hair can go in a high ponytail, stay short and textured, or sit in sleek braids. Keep the makeup graphic but simple: an elongated liner and a dark cherry lip tint. It's comfortable enough for a concert or a campus party.
11. Gothic Western Vampire Outfit

Gothic Western is a fun twist, and it's distinct from the Victorian vampire most people picture. Wear a fitted black button-front shirt with coated bootcut jeans and a long burgundy duster. Pointed Western ankle boots keep the theme without tipping into a cowboy costume. A wide-brim hat changes how much of your face shows in photos, so I'd try it with the makeup on before deciding. Add a silver-buckled belt, a structured crossbody, and one bolo or small pendant rather than a stack of jewellery. Tousled waves, a textured short cut or a low braid all suit it. Finish with softly smudged liner and a muted wine lip.
12. Black Column Dress Vampire Outfit

A long black column dress makes the vampire shape through simplicity alone. Choose a fitted knit or crepe with long sleeves and a high neck, then add pointed knee-high boots and an ankle-length tailored coat for one long vertical line. Knit column dresses cling, so a slip underneath helps the fabric fall straight. Sculptural silver earrings, a slim cuff and a structured clutch give it an editorial feel. Wear the hair straight and tucked behind the ears or in a glossy low bun. Keep the skin natural, then define the cheekbones, add gray-brown shadow and a deep plum lip. It suits a formal party where a costume would feel like too much.
13. Black Velvet Jumpsuit Vampire Outfit

A velvet jumpsuit is the one-piece answer: put it on and the outfit is mostly done. Look for a wrap-front or tailored cut with full-length legs and a defined waist, and layer a sheer high-neck top underneath if the neckline is deeper than you like. Jumpsuits mean undressing for the bathroom, so I always check the zip reaches far enough to step out of easily. Pointed pumps or platform ankle boots add height. Carry a boxy clutch, wear long silver earrings and one statement ring. Side-parted waves or a sleek ponytail both work. Smoky liner, luminous skin and a dark raspberry lip finish a strong party look.
14. Sheer Layered Black Vampire Outfit

Sheer fabric adds mystery when it sits over solid basics, not in place of them. Begin with a black camisole and slim trousers, then add a long mesh tunic or button-front sheer dress on top. A fitted blazer or cropped moto jacket gives all that softness some structure. Mesh snags easily on rings and bag chains, so I keep jewellery smooth with this look. Pointed ankle boots or platform loafers finish the base. A small shoulder bag, a delicate long necklace and a few slim rings are plenty. A loose updo with wispy strands moves with the mesh. Blurred charcoal shadow, defined lashes and a satin berry lip complete it.
15. Brocade Vest Vampire Outfit

A brocade vest brings in history without committing you to a period costume. Wear a black-and-burgundy vest over a crisp black shirt with the collar slightly open, then cigarette pants or wide-leg trousers depending on the silhouette you like. Brocade is stiff, so the vest should be fitted at the side seams or it stands away from the body. Polished heeled loafers and a long wool overcoat keep it modern. Add a structured satchel, an antique-style watch and one gemstone ring. Slick the hair back, wave it softly or keep a neat short cut. Subtle contour, clean liner and a dark red lip stain finish it, and the whole look shifts easily across gender.
16. Long Opera Coat Vampire Outfit

An opera coat moves like a cape but looks far more grown-up. I'd pick a black velvet or matte satin one that skims the floor, and wear it over a fitted mock-neck bodysuit with tailored trousers. Pointed boots keep the long line unbroken from shoulder to floor. A floor-skimming hem picks up everything outdoors, so if you're walking any distance, hold it slightly when crossing wet ground. Long gloves suit a formal event; skip them for a simpler evening. Carry a small structured clutch and add chandelier earrings or one ornate brooch. Polished waves or an elegant low bun, a clean cat eye and classic burgundy lipstick finish the drama without fangs.
17. Grunge Slip Dress Vampire Outfit

Grunge vampire is the one I'd send someone thrifting for. Layer a black slip dress over a faded charcoal fitted T-shirt, then add an oversized burgundy cardigan or a worn faux-leather jacket. Sheer black tights and chunky lace-up boots make it comfortable for hours. A little wear on the cardigan helps here, so secondhand pieces often look better than new. Carry a slouchy shoulder bag, with layered silver chains, small hoops and stacked rings. Leave the hair with its natural texture, in messy waves or a claw-clip twist. Smudged brown-black liner and a blurred berry lip match the undone mood.
18. Moto Jacket And Mini Skirt Vampire Outfit

A cropped moto jacket gives the look a younger, energetic edge. Layer it over a fitted burgundy mock-neck and a black A-line mini skirt, then add opaque tights and knee-high boots for a long, continuous leg. Opaque tights in a higher denier are the thing I'd spend a little more on, because thin black tights turn gray at the knee once they stretch. A small chain-strap bag, silver hoops and a dark stone pendant finish it. Wear a sleek high ponytail, shoulder-length waves or a textured short cut. Winged liner, brushed brows and a cool berry lip give definition. Swap the mini for shorts or a longer skirt if that suits you better.
19. Romantic Ruffled Maxi Dress Vampire Outfit

Ruffles and a long hem bring out the romantic side of the vampire. Pick a black, plum or wine maxi dress with a high neck, gathered sleeves and a little lace trim, then ground all that flow with pointed ankle boots or block-heel Mary Janes. A long ruffled dress can swamp a shorter frame, and a narrow belt at the natural waist fixes that quickly. Add a velvet mini bag and antique-inspired earrings. Brushed waves, a braided low bun or a half-up style all suit the dress. Rose-plum eye makeup with a matching stained lip keeps the colours soft. It photographs well in autumn light outdoors.
20. Pinstripe Waistcoat Suit Vampire Outfit

Pinstripes suit a city vampire who means business. Pair a fitted black waistcoat with matching high-waisted trousers and a dark red satin shirt, and let a long tailored overcoat stand in for the cape. Pinstripes show any twist at the seams, so I check that the stripes run straight down the leg before wearing them out. Polished loafers, pointed boots or low block heels all work. A metal watch, slim rings and a compact briefcase or top-handle bag finish it. Hair goes in a glossy side part, a clean bun or a neat short cut. Subtle shadow and a muted burgundy lip keep it refined, and it's an easy one for menswear-inspired styling.
21. Emerald Velvet Vampire Outfit

Emerald green is the surprise in a wardrobe of black and red. Start with an emerald velvet blazer or midi dress and pair it with black tailored separates; with the blazer, a satin camisole and wide-leg trousers work well. Green velvet looks almost black in dim rooms and glows under flash, which is half its appeal. Pointed black boots, a structured bag and silver jewellery set with deep green stones keep the palette tight. Smooth glossy hair with a centre part, or a low twisted bun, keeps it sleek. Soft charcoal liner, a hint of green-brown shadow and a blackberry lip finish it.
22. Midnight Blue Satin Vampire Outfit

Midnight blue looks nearly black in low light, which makes it a quiet, clever choice. Wear a satin button-front blouse with matching wide-leg pants or a flowing bias-cut skirt, and layer a fitted black blazer on top for definition. Navy and black side by side can look like a mistake in daylight, so I keep the blazer in a sharper fabric so the contrast reads as intentional. Pointed ankle boots, a small patent bag and silver drop earrings finish the outfit. Smooth waves or a sleek low ponytail tied with a narrow velvet ribbon work. Navy-gray eyeshadow, black mascara and a cool plum lip complete a softer take on the theme.
23. Black And White Contrast Vampire Outfit

Black and white contrast points back to the classic film vampire without looking dated. Start with a crisp white high-collar blouse tucked into black tailored trousers or a long fitted skirt, then add a cropped black blazer or a sharp waistcoat. White collars pick up makeup at the neck, so I set foundation with powder before buttoning up. Pointed boots and a structured black bag keep it tidy. A black ribbon tie, a silver pendant and small pearl earrings are the only details. Wear a smooth bun, a straight bob or sculpted waves. Sharp liner and a deep berry lip, as the only strong colour, finish it.
24. Plus Size Wrap Dress Vampire Outfit

A velvet wrap dress is one of the most flattering vampire pieces I know for a plus-size figure, since you set the waist yourself. Pick black, dark plum or burgundy with a midi hem and sleeves that suit the weather. Semi-opaque tights and pointed knee-high boots or stable block heels go underneath, and a longline coat adds a long vertical layer. I'd check the wrap in a mirror while sitting, because some wraps open at the knee. A structured bag, a bold pendant and statement earrings near the neckline frame the face. Voluminous curls, a high bun or sleek waves all suit it. Smoky liner, glowing skin and a rich berry lip finish it, with supportive underlayers so you're comfortable all night.
25. Androgynous Longline Vampire Outfit

Long tailored layers make an androgynous vampire with quiet authority. Wear an oversized black button-front shirt under a sleeveless longline vest, with straight charcoal trousers. A narrow burgundy scarf brings in colour without breaking the clean shape. An oversized shirt under a vest can bunch at the hips, so a half tuck at the front keeps the line long. Polished lace-up boots, a structured crossbody and simple silver rings finish it. Slicked-back hair, an undercut, a cropped texture or a low ponytail all reinforce the sharp lines. Softly shaded eyes, groomed brows and a sheer plum balm keep the makeup adaptable. Adjust fit and jewellery to make it yours.
26. Black Jeans And Burgundy Sweater Vampire Outfit

Everyday vampire can be as simple as dark denim and one rich knit. High-rise black jeans and a fitted burgundy sweater, ideally mock-neck or square-neck, are the base. The long black coat and pointed ankle boots are what make it look intentional instead of just a Tuesday. Burgundy knits fade with washing, so wash yours inside out and cold to keep the colour deep. A structured shoulder bag, a silver pendant, small hoops and two or three rings are enough. Natural waves, a polished ponytail or a textured short cut all fit. Soft charcoal liner and a tinted berry balm replace heavy makeup.
27. Summer Mesh Vampire Outfit

Not every Halloween is cold, and this is the look for a warm night. Start with a black sleeveless top and tailored knee-length shorts, then add a sheer mesh button-front layer that moves like a light coat. Pointed flats, sleek sandals or breathable platform loafers beat heavy boots in the heat. A compact crossbody, dark sunglasses and minimal silver jewellery keep it clean. Wear a high bun, a short wet-look style or a sleek ponytail to keep hair off the neck. Waterproof liner is worth it here, because regular liner smudges as soon as you get warm. Finish with a berry lip stain that won't need touching up.
28. Winter Faux Fur Vampire Outfit

Cold weather lets you go all in on rich textures. Wear a long black faux-fur coat over a fitted burgundy knit dress or a turtleneck and trousers in one colour. Add fleece-lined tights when it's properly cold, and pick pointed knee-high boots with a walkable heel. Faux fur sheds on dark clothing, so I give the coat a good shake outside and run a lint roller over the dress before leaving. Leather gloves, a structured top-handle bag and dark gemstone earrings add polish. Smooth waves or a low bun that sits under the coat collar work best. Softly smoked eyes, defined cheeks and a wine satin lip finish it, and the coat comes straight off indoors.
29. Patent Raincoat Vampire Outfit

Rain actually suits a vampire, thanks to all that gloss. Choose a black patent or water-resistant trench over a charcoal turtleneck and slim burgundy trousers, with waterproof pointed boots for the wet pavement. A compact black umbrella counts as an accessory here. Burgundy trousers can show water marks at the hem, so I'd roll them a touch higher or choose a darker shade if rain is certain. Add a structured crossbody and silver earrings. A smooth low ponytail, bun or braid keeps frizz down. Smudge-resistant liner and a long-wearing plum lip finish a look built for real weather.
30. Leather Concert Vampire Outfit

A concert vampire has to move, so comfort decides the shoes before style does. Pair straight faux-leather pants with a fitted black mesh-sleeve top and a cropped burgundy jacket, and wear platform boots with grippy soles rather than delicate heels. A hands-free crossbody keeps your phone close in a crowd. Silver ear cuffs, layered necklaces and rings catch the stage lights. A high ponytail, braids, a textured crop or half-up waves all hold up to dancing. Makeup can be bolder here; I'd pick a transfer-resistant dark cherry lip, since you'll be drinking from bottles and cups all night. Smoked liner finishes it.
31. Pencil Skirt Office Vampire Outfit

A black pencil skirt anchors a subtle vampire for a workplace that allows Halloween dressing but not costumes. Pair it with a high-neck burgundy blouse and a fitted charcoal blazer, plus opaque tights and pointed loafers, ankle boots or low heels to suit your office. A structured tote, a simple watch, stud earrings and one antique-style ring are enough. Pencil skirts restrict your stride, so I'd check you can climb stairs and get into a car comfortably before choosing a narrow one. Hair should feel polished, from a low bun to a short textured cut. Neutral taupe shadow, mascara and a sheer berry lipstick keep the colour restrained.
32. Satin Wide-Leg Set Vampire Outfit

A matching satin set looks planned with almost no effort. Choose a long-sleeve blouse and wide-leg trousers in black, burgundy or deep plum, and define the waist with a slim belt or a partial tuck. Satin wrinkles behind the knees as soon as you sit, so a light steam right before you go out is worth it. Add pointed heels or streamlined ankle boots and a small hard-shell clutch. Long earrings and a sculptural cuff add shine without fighting the fabric. Wear a sleek centre-part ponytail or brushed waves, with smoky brown eyes and a wine lip. Later, both pieces split up nicely into everyday outfits.
33. Black Sequin Vampire Outfit

Sequins can work for a vampire when everything else stays sleek. Wear a long-sleeved black sequin midi dress, or a sequin top with tailored black trousers, then layer a matte wool coat over it so the shine has something to play against. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so check the underarm seams are lined before you buy. Pointed boots or simple pumps keep it grown-up. Carry a plain velvet clutch, and keep jewellery to small drop earrings and one dark gemstone ring. A smooth low bun or glossy side-parted waves look strongest. Elongated liner and a deep raspberry lip finish a party look that still suits a family event.
34. Soft Goth Cardigan Vampire Outfit

A cardigan makes the gentlest vampire on the list, and it's one you can wear to a daytime event. Layer an oversized charcoal or black knit over a fitted burgundy top and a flowing black midi skirt, with opaque tights and platform loafers or lace-up ankle boots. Big cardigans pull the outfit wide, so I'd leave it open and let the skirt show the shape. A crescent shoulder bag, a delicate pendant and silver rings give it a quiet alternative edge. Wear the hair loose and waved, in a relaxed braid or with a velvet bow. Brown liner, mascara and a sheer blackberry balm keep the face soft.
35. Y2K Vampire Outfit

The Y2K vampire is playful and quick to put together. Pair black bootcut pants with a burgundy halter over a fine mesh long-sleeve top, then a cropped faux-leather jacket and pointed platform boots. A halter over mesh hides straps neatly, which is why the layering works so well. Small shoulder bag, narrow sunglasses, silver hoops and a short pendant give it that early-2000s feel. Straight glossy hair, spiky buns or a sleek high ponytail all fit. Thin winged liner, soft shimmering gray shadow and a cool berry gloss finish it. Gloss slides off fast, so I'd tuck the tube in your bag.
36. 1970s Flared Vampire Outfit

Flares and full sleeves give the vampire a bohemian, 1970s swing. Wear high-waisted black flared trousers with a burgundy satin blouse that has full sleeves or a tie neck, then a long velvet vest or fitted jacket on top. Flares need to be hemmed for the shoes you'll wear, so try them on with the platform boots before deciding on length. Add a structured shoulder bag, a pendant and a few vintage-style rings. Hair can be long and softly waved, shaped into a rounded natural style or tied back with a velvet scarf. Smoked brown liner and a muted plum lip finish it with plenty of nighttime colour.
37. 1990s Minimal Vampire Outfit

The 1990s minimal vampire is a long black slip dress under a straight-cut leather blazer, and very little else. Add sheer tights and square-toe ankle boots or minimalist pumps, a slim shoulder bag, small silver hoops and one pendant. Keep the hair straight with a centre part, in a polished bob or a simple low bun. Makeup leans on softly lined eyes, matte skin and a brown-plum lip. This is the look I'd give someone who hates ruffles and corsets. The mystery comes from proportion, so the blazer should end around the top of the hip, not halfway down the thigh. It moves easily from casual to formal.
38. Futuristic Silver And Black Vampire Outfit

Metallics push the vampire forward in time instead of back. Start with a fitted black mock-neck top and wide-leg coated trousers, then add a sharply structured silver-gray jacket or long sleeveless coat for contrast. Pointed black boots, a geometric mini bag and sculptural silver jewellery complete the base. I'd keep the silver to one big piece, the jacket, because metallic on metallic starts to look like a robot costume. Slicked-back hair, a precise bob or a high ponytail keeps the shape clean. Graphic charcoal liner and a cool plum lip support the angles. It suits anyone who prefers clean lines to gothic romance.
39. Red Cape Coat Vampire Outfit

A cape coat gives you the classic vampire sweep in something you can wear all winter. Pick a structured burgundy or black cape coat with arm openings and a clean, tailored collar. The arm slits matter more than they sound: without them you can't hold a drink or a bag. Wear it over a fitted turtleneck with slim trousers, or a long knit dress, and keep the base sleek with pointed knee-high boots so the coat doesn't swallow you. Leather gloves, a structured bag and a small pendant at the neck finish it. Glossy waves or a low bun, softly smoky eyes and a red-plum lip complete a strong entrance.
40. Easy Last-Minute Vampire Outfit

Out of time? You can pull a convincing modern vampire together from basics in about the time it takes to do your eyeliner. Wear an all-black base: fitted top, straight jeans, ankle boots. Then add the longest black, burgundy or charcoal coat you own, which is the piece that creates movement. A silky scarf, a vintage-looking pendant, a structured bag and a few silver rings make it look intentional. Style a sharp centre part, a slicked-back ponytail or loose polished waves. Black liner, cool-toned shadow and berry lipstick finish the change. No fangs, face paint or cape needed.
Dark Lipstick That Lasts Past the First Drink
The deep lip carries so many of these looks that it deserves its own plan. Dark shades show every gap and smudge, and they stain cups, napkins and the edge of a white collar.
- Line the whole lip with a matching pencil, then fill in. The pencil gives the colour something to hold onto.
- Blot with a tissue, dust a little translucent powder through it, and add a second layer. It sets the colour without making it look dry.
- Wipe the inner rim of your lips with a cotton bud. That's where dark colour leaks onto teeth.
- Carry the pencil, not just the lipstick. Touching up the edge is faster than redoing the whole mouth.
- Patch-test any new long-wear formula on your wrist first, since some can dry or irritate sensitive lips.
To take it off, an oil-based cleanser or balm works far better than a wipe. Press it on, wait a few seconds, then wipe gently instead of scrubbing.
Crushed Pile, Water Spots and Other Fabric Trouble
These outfits lean on the fabrics that need the most care, so a little planning keeps them wearable for next year. Velvet crushes where you sit and lean. Hang it straight after wearing and steam it from the inside; never press it flat with an iron, because that flattens the pile for good. Satin marks with water, so blot spills rather than rubbing, and let it dry before you judge the damage. Faux leather cracks if it's folded tight, so store it on a hanger. Lace and mesh snag on rings and zips, which is why I fold them inside out and keep them away from anything with hooks. Most of these pieces will outlast one Halloween if you treat them like good clothes instead of a costume.
The Coat Does Most of the Work
If I had to boil all forty looks down, it would be this: one rich fabric, one dark lip, and the longest coat you can find. Velvet, satin, lace and faux leather set the mood, and pointed shoes with one antique-looking piece of jewellery add personality. Black is the easiest base, but burgundy, plum, emerald, midnight blue and metallic gray all keep things interesting. Go lighter on hair and makeup for daytime and stronger for an evening event. You don't need a cape, a corset or fangs for people to get it. Pick the look that matches what's already in your closet, and spend your money on the single piece that's missing.
