Here's what I've learned dressing heroines: people recognise a character from her colours and silhouette long before they notice any detail. That's good news, because it means leggings, a fitted top, a jacket and one handmade emblem can carry almost any of the 35 women's superheroes below, from Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel to Photon, Ironheart and an original hero of your own. Each entry covers the base, hair, makeup, accessories and shoes, and I've flagged the spots where comfort, coverage or a long night on your feet should change your choices.

Thrift Racks Sorted by Colour, Not Character
When I build a hero from secondhand pieces, I ignore the costume aisle and shop by colour instead. A royal-blue athletic top, a red pleated skirt, a purple vest or a yellow raincoat can each become three different heroines, and they're far better made than most packaged suits.
- Look in activewear first. Leggings and fitted long-sleeve tops come in the saturated reds, blues and purples heroes wear, and they hold their shape after washing.
- Check outerwear for the jacket characters. Denim, faux leather and bombers carry America Chavez, Black Canary, Rogue and Jessica Jones almost by themselves.
- Hold colours together at the rack. Two reds that look the same apart can clash badly side by side, so I carry the first piece with me while I shop for the second.
- Skip anything that needs a lot of altering. A hem or a dart is fine; resizing a whole jumpsuit is usually more work than the costume is worth.
Once you have the base, the emblem is your one real craft job. I cut a paper template, hold it against the body in a mirror, then trace it onto felt or craft foam. Fifteen minutes on that and the rest of the costume falls into place.
1. Classic Wonder Woman Costume

I'd build this Wonder Woman on a long-sleeve red bodysuit rather than a strapless top, because it stays put when you raise your arms and gives coverage without changing the look. The gold eagle emblem goes across the chest; cut it from craft foam and paint it, as gold fabric alone looks flat. A blue skirt or shorts over opaque tights, or leggings sprinkled with white stars, plus gold cuffs, a metallic belt and a red cape. Polished dark waves with a star headband, red lipstick, and red boots or red-and-white sneakers. It slots easily into a hero group.
2. Captain Marvel Jumpsuit Costume

Captain Marvel's suit is a blue base with red side panels and a gold star, and the cleanest way to get there is a blue athletic set. I measure the red panels on the body, not the flat garment, since stretch fabric widens once it's on and tape cut flat ends up too narrow. A red sash at the waist adds movement. A loose shoulder-length blonde style or a wig, glowing skin, neutral lips and a little gold shadow. Supportive high-tops beat ankle boots for a long evening, and gold fingerless gloves finish it.
3. Black Widow Tactical Costume

Matte fabric is the secret to a sharp Black Widow; shiny spandex looks like a shop costume under flash. A black utility jumpsuit, or a fitted black top with high-waisted cargo trousers, topped with a lightweight moto jacket. The red hourglass patch on the belt or upper back is the identifier, so make it big enough to see. Red cuffs, fingerless gloves and a few small empty pouches. A shoulder-length red wig or relaxed natural waves, smoky gray eyes and a muted berry lip, with flat combat boots for the night.
4. Supergirl Skirt Costume

Supergirl in a skirt is a cheerful pick for school and family events. A fitted blue top with the red-and-yellow shield, and a red pleated knee-length skirt. Pleats only hold if the fabric has some body; thin polyester knife pleats fall out by the end of the day, so I'd pick a heavier knit or press them with a damp cloth. Opaque tights in nude, blue or red, and a light cape fastened at the shoulders, short enough not to drag. Long blonde hair or a curled wig, rosy cheeks and pink lips. Red knee-high boots or red sneakers, plus small gold studs.
5. Purple Batgirl Costume

Batgirl's purple-and-yellow scheme carries the costume, so the cowl can go. A purple eye mask with a soft pointed headband suggests it while keeping your view and breathing clear. Purple leggings and a fitted top or a purple jumpsuit, a yellow bat emblem, utility belt, gloves and a short scalloped cape. I cut the scallops with a dinner plate as a template, which keeps them even. Red or auburn waves under the headpiece, plum shadow and neutral lips, and flat purple ankle boots. Reflective yellow tape on the belt and cape edge shows up well in night photos.
6. Spider-Gwen Hooded Costume

A crisp white hood over a black base with pink webbing is the whole Spider-Gwen signal. Black leggings with a fitted black-and-white athletic top, or a full jumpsuit, with pink fabric or removable web panels lining the hood and inner sleeves. The teal shoes surprise people and complete the character, so don't swap them for white. A blonde bob wig with faint pink or purple ends looks current when the hood is down. Soft pink shadow and graphic liner. I'd carry the white half-mask and wear it only for photos, since it cuts your side vision.
7. Scarlet Witch Cape Costume

Burgundy and scarlet layered together look richer than one red, which is why I like this Scarlet Witch. A red fitted top over black leggings or a long burgundy skirt, then a structured red jacket or flowing cape. The pointed crown can be foam, metallic cardstock or a fabric-covered headband; foam is the most forgiving if you'll be hugging people. Long auburn waves or a red-brown wig, rosy shadow and deep berry lips. Red fingerless gloves suggest her power in photos. Black knee-high boots or burgundy ankle boots, and layers that let you sit comfortably.
8. She-Hulk Bodysuit Costume

This She-Hulk is athletic and quick to assemble from a purple-and-white jumpsuit, a tennis dress over opaque tights, or workout separates with white or silver geometric panels. If you go for green skin, use skin-safe costume makeup on the face, neck and arms, apply it in thin layers with a damp sponge, and set it with powder; thick green paint cracks at the elbows. A long dark-green wig in big waves, purple shadow and pink lips. White athletic boots or sneakers. For less makeup, I'd wear a green long-sleeve layer and gloves and colour only the face.
9. Storm White Cape Costume

This Storm goes all white, which is elegant and needs care. A white jumpsuit, a fitted long-sleeve dress over leggings, or a white top and trousers, with a light cape fixed at the wrists or shoulders so it spreads in photos. Silver cuffs, a metallic belt and lightning earrings. I'd choose opaque, slightly heavier white fabric and nude underlayers, since thin white turns see-through under a flash. A white wig long or short, silver shadow and cool lipstick. White boots or silver sneakers, and skip the coloured lenses.
10. Ms. Marvel Tunic Costume

Kamala Khan's look comes together from modest everyday pieces: a long blue tunic with a gold lightning emblem over red leggings, and a red scarf wrapped at the neck with its ends falling behind like a small cape. I pin the scarf at the back of each shoulder with a safety pin from inside, so it doesn't slide off when you move. Gold cuffs, a red eye mask and a waist sash. Natural dark waves or a centre-parted wig, pink cheeks and tinted balm, and red high-tops. It suits teens, teachers and anyone wanting generous coverage.
11. The Wasp Jumpsuit Costume

Black and gold make this Wasp crisp and modern. A black jumpsuit or athletic separates with curved gold panels along the torso, arms and legs in removable fabric tape. For wings, I stretch iridescent fabric over a light wire frame and close the frame with tape where the ends meet so no wire tip pokes out. Keep them compact and mount them on a small backpack-style harness, not pinned to thin fabric. A short dark bob, gold shadow and neat liner, black gloves, a simple silver headset, and black ankle boots or sneakers.
12. Invisible Woman Blue Costume

Invisible Woman is one of the friendliest DIY heroes, since it's just clean blue lines and a number. A royal-blue jumpsuit, unitard or top and leggings, black side panels, a black collar and a round chest patch with the team number. Gloves and belt in the same black make the homemade bits look like one uniform. Blonde waves, a straight cut or a ponytail, cool shadow and pale pink lips. Knee-high boots for the comic finish, flat ankle boots for walking. A clear acrylic clutch or transparent bracelets are a sly nod to her power.
13. Mera Green Scale Costume

Mera's green scales are what set her apart, and there are three ways to get them. Metallic scale-print fabric is easiest, sequin panels shine most, and a removable net overlay over plain green gives a subtle texture you can take off later. I'd try the net first; sequins scratch under the arms. A long-sleeve green jumpsuit, fitted maxi dress or top and leggings is the base, with a gold belt and small crown. Polished red waves or a copper wig, sea-green shadow and coral lips. Gold boots or green flats, shell earrings and an aqua cape.
14. Shuri Black Panther Costume

Shuri's tech look relies on angular trim, so plan it on paper first. A fitted black jumpsuit, or cargo trousers and a long-sleeve athletic top, with silver trim at the shoulders, neckline and waist and small purple panels for contrast. Braids, twists or another protective style that feels secure. Silver dots in cosmetic-grade paint, purple liner and a natural lip. A cat-ear headband and soft eye mask replace a helmet. I'd keep foam pieces off the elbows and knees altogether, because that's where they crease and pop off first. Combat boots and light cuffs.
15. America Chavez Denim Costume

America Chavez is about as easy as heroes get. A blue denim jacket with a big white star across the back, a red tee, and black shorts over opaque tights, or black skinny jeans if you want more coverage. Smaller star patches on the sleeves and an optional striped waist detail. I sew the stars on with a running stitch about half a centimetre in from the edge; on denim, iron-on patches start lifting at the points. Soft centre-parted waves, bold brows and red lips, white high-tops with bright laces, and a star-shaped crossbody bag.
16. Jessica Jones Leather Jacket Costume

Jessica Jones is my go-to last-minute suggestion because nothing on it is a costume. Faded jeans, a gray tank or tee and a slightly oversized black leather-look jacket, plus a long charcoal scarf on a cool night. Messy shoulder-length waves, light foundation, smudged brown liner and a neutral lip. Black lace-up boots. An old camera or small notebook hints at the detective work. Because the clothes are subtle, posture sells it: hands in pockets, a flat expression, and you'll be guessed far more often.
17. Kate Bishop Purple Costume

Kate Bishop works in purple separates that you'll wear again. Black leggings or slim cargo trousers, a fitted purple top and a cropped purple utility vest, with black fingerless gloves, a purple belt and a few small pouches. A subtle arrow emblem on the chest or shoulder replaces a bow and quiver; most venues don't love prop weapons anyway. A high ponytail with loose front pieces, lavender shadow and pink lips. Combat boots or purple high-tops, and purple-tinted sunglasses if you like. Every piece moves freely, which matters if you'll be dancing.
18. Dark Phoenix Costume

Deep red with metallic gold reads as Dark Phoenix, and the fabric does a lot of the work. A red jumpsuit, fitted long-sleeve dress over leggings, or red athletic separates, with a big gold bird emblem across the chest reaching toward the shoulders. A wide gold sash and cuffs balance it. Metallic gold fabric catches light well in photos; I'd interface the emblem so it doesn't wrinkle on the body. Voluminous long red waves, copper shadow, winged liner and dark red lips. Gold boots or red shoes with gold covers, and a short sheer red cape if you want movement.
19. Rogue Green And Yellow Costume

This is the retro green-and-yellow Rogue with the brown bomber. A green jumpsuit or top and leggings, yellow panels in stretch fabric or removable tape, and a cropped brown bomber over the shoulders. Yellow gloves, a green headband and a simple belt link the pieces. The white streak in a big auburn wig is the giveaway; if you're styling your own hair, place a white clip-in right at the front hairline. Peach blush and a warm rose lip. Yellow knee-high boots or green shoes with yellow cuffs, or green jeans with a fitted top if a jumpsuit feels restrictive.
20. Jubilee Yellow Coat Costume

Everything in Jubilee hangs off the yellow coat, so find that first; a thrifted yellow raincoat works and keeps you dry. Layer it over a hot-pink top and high-waisted blue shorts with opaque black tights, or jeans on a cold night. Pink sunglasses, fingerless gloves and star earrings bring the comic colour. A soft shoulder-length cut or a black bob wig, pink and purple shadow, glossy lips and a little face shimmer. Blue or yellow flat ankle boots. Coloured translucent bracelets stand in for her light powers in bright photos.
21. Elastigirl Red Jumpsuit Costume

Elastigirl is family-friendly and easy to coordinate with a group. A long-sleeve red jumpsuit or red top and leggings, the black-and-yellow oval emblem on the chest, and black brief-style shorts or a wide black waist panel. Black gloves, an eye mask and thigh-high black boot covers create the graphic outline. I'd sew a strip of elastic inside the top of each boot cover, otherwise they slide down to the knee within an hour. A chin-length auburn bob with ends curled under, rosy cheeks and red lips. Comfortable black boots, and stretch fabric throughout.
22. Violet Parr Superhero Costume

Violet uses the family colours in a quieter, youthful way. A fitted red long-sleeve top and leggings with the oval emblem, black shorts over the leggings and a simple orange belt. Black gloves, an eye mask and knee-high boot covers. The long black hair with a deep side part is what makes her Violet rather than a generic family member, so take time on it. Minimal makeup and pale pink lips. Black sneakers are a sensible choice for teens. A short, translucent smoky-gray capelet hints at invisibility; I'd keep it above the elbow so it doesn't tangle.
23. Starfire Purple Costume

Starfire's colours are strong, so the challenge is hair. A long orange-red wig in big waves is the easy route; pin it securely at the temples so it stays out of your eyes. The clothes are a purple jumpsuit, a fitted midi dress over tights, or a cropped top with high-waisted leggings, with silver trim at the collar, waist, wrists and boot tops. Lavender shadow and glossy pink lips. Skip any full skin recolouring and use a warm bronzer instead. Purple knee-high boots or silver sneakers, and green gems at the neckline and wrists for her energy.
24. Raven Hooded Cape Costume

Raven's hooded cape is the costume, so choose its fabric carefully. Heavy velvet looks theatrical and drags; a soft jersey or brushed polyester drapes cleanly and is lighter to wear. A deep purple hooded cape over a black long-sleeve dress and tights, or a black top and leggings, fastened with a round red gem. A gold belt with light red circles, matching cuffs and a small red forehead jewel. A short violet bob, or your own hair tucked under the hood. Lavender-gray shadow and a plum lip, purple ankle boots, and a knee-length cape.
25. Vixen Orange Jumpsuit Costume

Vixen's key piece is a small gold animal pendant, so start there and build the warm orange, gold and black outfit around it. An orange jumpsuit or burnt-orange leggings with a fitted top, black side panels and a gold belt, plus patterned cuffs. I'd limit animal print to one item, a leopard scarf at the waist for example; two or three prints together start to look like a jungle party. Long waves, braids or your full natural texture. Bronze shadow, radiant skin and a warm berry lip. Black knee-high boots or gold-accented sneakers.
26. Black Canary Jacket Costume

Black Canary is mostly closet basics, which makes her a great fallback. A black fitted top, high-waisted black shorts over patterned opaque tights, or black jeans for warmth. A cropped faux-leather jacket, fingerless gloves and a small black choker. The fishnet look is easy with patterned tights; I'd wear a plain pair underneath on a cold night. Loose blonde waves or a shoulder-length wig, smoky eyes and a muted red lip. Sturdy black ankle boots rather than tall heels, and a small silver bird pin on the jacket.
27. Spider-Woman Red Costume

Spider-Woman is vivid red with yellow and black web details. A red jumpsuit, bodysuit over leggings or athletic separates, a yellow triangular chest panel and yellow sections along the arms and legs. I draw the black web lines on removable fabric panels with a fabric marker, never straight on the clothing, so the base stays wearable. Glossy long dark waves and a red eye mask with wide eye holes. Red-toned shadow and neutral lips. Yellow boot covers over red sneakers. Keep any underarm glider panels short and stretchy.
28. Silk Black And White Costume

This Silk takes the darker black-and-white palette. A fitted black jumpsuit or long-sleeve top and leggings with a white web design across the chest, shoulders and arms in fabric paint, tape or a printed panel. White paint on black needs two or three thin coats; one thick coat looks streaky and cracks. Red accents at the waist and ankles add a little colour. Long dark hair left visible, sharp liner and a berry lip. A red fabric face covering rests at the neck and lifts for photos. Black sneakers or ankle boots with red laces.
29. Squirrel Girl Tail Costume

Squirrel Girl only works with the big tail, and a floppy tail ruins it. I stuff the tail firmly with fiberfill around a bendable core, then attach it to its own belt so it curls up behind you and doesn't pull your leggings down. Brown leggings with a fitted brown top or a faux-fur-trimmed jacket, an orange utility belt, acorn pouches and a rounded-ear headband. Loose brown or auburn curls, warm shadow, peach blush and drawn-on freckles. Brown lace-up boots and fur-cuffed fingerless gloves. Keep the tail narrow enough to get through doors.
30. Ironheart Armor Costume

Ironheart looks armoured without heavy plastic if you plan the foam around the joints. A fitted red jumpsuit or athletic separates is the base, with lightweight burgundy foam panels on the chest, shoulders, forearms and shins, and gaps at every elbow and knee. Gold metallic trim and a reflective blue fabric circle make the glowing heart. A high curly puff, braids or twists, gold shadow and deep pink lips. Red sneakers with removable foam boot panels. If you make the open-face helmet, I'd leave the ears uncovered; muffled hearing is tiring in a noisy room.
31. Photon Black And White Costume

Photon's black-and-white scheme is graphic and needs few materials. A fitted black jumpsuit or top and leggings, white geometric panels on the shoulders, chest, waist and thighs, and a silver starburst in the centre. White gloves and ankle cuffs spread the light colour evenly. Natural curls, braids or a short textured cut, silver shadow and highlighter with clear gloss. White sneakers or black boots with silver trim. Reflective tape is the clever choice here, as it flares bright in flash photos; I cut it into strips rather than big sheets, so it bends with you.
32. Gamora Green Costume

This Gamora leans on green and black. Black fitted trousers, a sleeveless black tunic or faux-leather vest over a green long-sleeve shirt, silver shoulder details, a burgundy belt and fingerless gloves. Green face and neck makeup should be skin-safe, patch-tested and set with powder; I'd also keep a dark scarf handy to protect the neckline. A long black wig with burgundy or purple ends, plum shadow and berry lips. Black knee-high or combat boots. Skip props; a metallic cuff and geometric pendant give enough futuristic detail for a family event.
33. Mantis Green And Black Costume

Mantis's antennae are the thing to get right. I bend light wire into two curves, cover them in soft foam, and bind them to a padded headband with thread wrapped tightly at the base, which holds better than glue alone. Keep them short enough to clear doorframes. The base is a dark green jumpsuit, a long-sleeve dress over tights or a green top with black leggings, with black side panels, a narrow belt and small metallic shoulder pieces. Loose dark waves, soft green shadow and pink lips, green ankle boots or black sneakers, and green gem earrings.
34. Mighty Thor Blue And Silver Costume

This Mighty Thor goes blue and silver with a deep red cape. A fitted navy jumpsuit or dark blue top and leggings, with lightweight silver foam panels at the chest, shoulders, wrists and knees. Attach the knee-length cape with easy-release fasteners such as snaps, so a tug from behind pulls it off rather than choking you. Long blonde waves or braids, silver shadow and rosy lips. Black boots with removable silver cuffs. A winged silver headband replaces the helmet and keeps your face visible. No hammer needed.
35. Original Female Superhero Costume

An original hero is the most fun to design, and the trick is restraint. Pick two contrasting colours for a jumpsuit or leggings and long-sleeve top, then one handmade chest emblem for your power: a star, cloud, flame, flower or lightning bolt. Add a short cape, a metallic belt, cuffs and a soft eye mask. I'd let the makeup echo just one costume colour. Natural hair or a bright wig, and supportive boots or high-tops. Give your hero a name, a power and a pose you can strike on cue; it makes homemade pieces feel like a real character.
Adding Coverage Without Losing the Character
Many classic heroines were drawn in leotards and bare legs, and plenty of people would rather not wear that, for comfort, warmth, a school or work dress code, or simple preference. The good news is that coverage rarely costs you the character, as long as the colours stay in the same places.
Swap skin for matching fabric
Where a character shows bare legs, opaque tights in a skin tone or a costume colour keep the outline. Where she shows bare arms, a fitted long-sleeve layer in the main colour reads as part of the suit. I match the weight of fabrics too; a thick knit sleeve under a thin top looks bulky at the shoulder.
Lengthen in the right colour
Shorts become a knee-length skirt or leggings, a leotard becomes a tunic over leggings. Keep the original colour block at the hips, so a red-shorts character still has red at the hips. The tunic approach that suits Ms. Marvel works for Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Elastigirl just as well.
Warmth without bulk
For an outdoor night, a thin thermal base layer under fitted athletic clothes keeps the smooth line, where a sweater underneath would show every ridge. A cape doubles as a wrap between photos, and a jacket character can simply zip up.
A Hero Is Mostly Colour and Posture
Every heroine on this list comes down to the same few choices: the right colour blocks, a silhouette people know, and a base you can wear all night. Start there, then add hair, makeup, shoes and only the accessories that help. Light capes, flexible masks, flat boots and breathable layers make the evening easier. Test temporary makeup in advance, pin your wig firmly, and check that nothing on your head blocks your view. And adapt each character to your own coverage and comfort rather than copying a screen version exactly. Stand like the hero, and the simplest costume reads.
