A blonde and a brunette standing together have a head start on any duo costume, because the hair already tells people who is who. The pairs people ask me for most are TV best friends, Y2K favourites, old-film icons, princesses, witches and dolls, plus a few simple concept pairs you can pull from everyday clothes. I've mixed named characters with looser ideas that suit friends, sisters, couples or any two people willing to wear a wig. Each pair below covers clothing, hair, makeup, accessories, props and shoes, and you can lengthen skirts, add sleeves or lower heels to fit your event.

When Your Real Hair Doesn't Match the Character
Plenty of duos aren't a natural blonde and a natural brunette. Two brunettes, a redhead and a blonde, or one person with short hair all come up constantly. You have more options than buying two full wigs.
Going darker for one night
Temporary brown or black colour sprays cover light hair well enough for photos, but they rub off on collars, hats and pillowcases. I spray it outside or over a towel, let it dry fully, then brush gently. Wear darker clothes near the neck if you use one, and test on a strand first if your hair is bleached, since very porous hair can hold the tint longer than the can suggests.
Going blonde without bleach
Spray colour rarely makes dark hair blonde convincingly. A wig is the honest answer here. A cheap synthetic wig sheds and tangles, so brush it with a wide-tooth comb before you wear it, starting from the ends, and mist it lightly with fabric softener mixed into water to calm the shine and static. Keep it away from oven doors and candles, because synthetic fibre frizzes or melts near heat.
Making a wig sit right
- Flatten your own hair into pin curls or a low braid, then put on a wig cap that matches your skin or the wig colour.
- Pull the wig on from front to back and line it up with your natural hairline, not your eyebrows.
- Pin through the wig into the cap at the crown and above each ear.
- If the front looks shiny or fake, a headband, hat or bangs hide the line, which suits a lot of the pairs below.
1. Serena And Blair School Costume

Serena and Blair is the school pair I'd start with, because the difference between them is all in how the same uniform is worn. Serena tucks a white button-down loosely into a plaid skirt, with a navy blazer, a loose tie, knee-high boots and a tote. Give her soft blonde waves and bronzed makeup. Blair wears a fitted white blouse, a pleated plaid skirt, a tailored blazer, opaque tights and loafers, with smooth dark curls, a headband, a rosy lip and a book-shaped clutch. Match the plaid colours but not the fit. If Serena looks as tidy as Blair, the joke disappears.
2. Lizzie McGuire And Isabella Pop Star Costume

Lizzie and Isabella's pop-star moment is a Y2K favourite, and it's mostly shine and platforms. Lizzie wears a shimmery lavender crop top over a fitted tank, flared metallic pants, platform sneakers and a sparkly headset mic, with straight blonde hair, tiny front braids, frosted shadow and gloss. Isabella wears a green or turquoise embellished top, wide-leg pants, platforms and colourful bracelets, with long brunette hair crimped a little to set her apart. Matching star clips and a second toy mic connect them. Metallic pants have no give, so I always look for a stretch version if you plan to dance.
3. Cher And Dionne Plaid Costume

Cher and Dionne are all about plaid, and both of them need a matching set. Cher wears a yellow plaid blazer and pleated skirt, white knee socks, Mary Janes and a small white bag, with straight blonde hair curled at the ends, natural makeup and pink gloss. Dionne wears a black, white and red plaid jacket with a matching mini, sheer tights and black platforms, and her brunette hair can go in long braids, waves or under a plaid hat. A fuzzy backpack or a toy flip phone works for each. Finding true matching plaid sets secondhand is hard, so I often pair a plaid blazer with a solid skirt in its main colour, which still reads at a distance.
4. Regina And Gretchen Pink Costume

Regina and Gretchen work because both wear pink, just differently. Regina puts a pink cardigan over a white fitted tank with a black pleated skirt and heeled ankle boots, plus big straight blonde hair, soft pink makeup, gloss and a small notebook or pink purse. Gretchen wears a pink sweater or cardigan, a plaid skirt, black tights and loafers, with sleek long brunette hair, a small barrette or headband, neutral eyes and a rosy lip. The shared pink ties them together, the skirts and hair keep them apart. It's also one of the quickest last-minute pairs, since soft knits are easy to find in any wardrobe.
5. Sharpay And Gabriella Musical Costume

Sharpay and Gabriella give you pink against red. Sharpay wears a hot pink sequined dress or top and skirt, a cropped faux-fur jacket, a rhinestone headband and silver flats, with big blonde curls, shimmery eyes, glossy pink lips and a star mic or glittery audition folder. Gabriella wears a red satin dress or a red top with a flowing skirt, a simple pendant and nude flats, with loose brunette curls, understated makeup and a soft berry lip, plus her own mic or a sheet-music folder. Sequins scratch the inside of the arm, so I suggest a soft long-sleeve layer under the jacket for anyone sensitive.
6. Hannah Montana And Miley Stewart Costume

Hannah Montana and Miley Stewart is one character split in two, which is a fun twist for best friends. The stage side wears a sparkly purple jacket, a sequined tank, slim black pants, silver ankle boots, a long blonde wig with bangs, bright makeup, rhinestones and a headset mic. The everyday side wears a graphic tee under a denim vest, bootcut jeans, layered necklaces and brown cowboy boots, with relaxed brunette waves and soft makeup. A guitar-shaped bag or a backstage pass makes the prop. Both halves are comfortable separates, so nobody spends the night tugging at a dress.
7. Elle Woods And Vivian Kensington Costume

Elle and Vivian pair bright pink with dark, serious preppy. Elle wears a tailored pink blazer with a matching skirt or trousers, a fitted top and pink pumps or ballet flats, with a smooth blonde blowout, fresh pink makeup and a structured bag holding a pretend law textbook. Vivian wears a navy blazer, a crisp button-down, a plaid skirt or tailored trousers, sheer tights and loafers, with sleek brunette hair, a simple headband, neutral makeup and a leather-look folder. Keep both refined. If you'll be walking outdoors, swap Elle's pumps for cushioned pink flats; the colour matters far more than the heel.
8. Phoebe And Rachel Friends Costume

Phoebe and Rachel are a relaxed 1990s pair you can mostly shop from your own closet. Phoebe wears a floral maxi skirt, a fitted knit top, a long cardigan, layered necklaces and chunky ankle boots, with loose blonde waves, tiny braids, natural makeup and a small guitar prop. Rachel wears a fitted black tee or sleeveless turtleneck, a plaid mini, sheer tights and loafers, with a bouncy layered blowout, brown liner and a neutral lip. A green apron and a coffee cup help people place her faster. The layered blowout is the hard part, so I'd use a big round brush or a layered wig rather than straight hair.
9. Caroline And Elena Vampire Costume

Caroline and Elena are a supernatural pair dressed in normal clothes, which makes them easy for school events or cold nights. Caroline wears a fitted jewel-tone top, a black skirt, a cropped jacket and knee-high boots, with smooth blonde curls, glowing makeup, a berry lip and a fine pendant. Elena wears a burgundy tank, dark skinny jeans, a black leather-look jacket and lace-up boots, with loose brunette waves and a light smoky eye. Matching antique-style rings and small diary props link them. A touch of paler foundation hints at the vampire side; I'd blend it down the neck so there's no line at the jaw.
10. Betty And Veronica Comic Costume

Betty and Veronica lean on the comic's red, blue and yellow. Betty wears a pale blue sweater over a white collared shirt, fitted jeans or an A-line skirt and clean white sneakers, with a high blonde ponytail, rosy makeup and a small notebook. Veronica wears a dark fitted dress or a black top with a plaid skirt, pearls and heeled loafers, with glossy brunette waves, a berry lip and a vintage-style bag or a school newspaper. Betty should look bright and friendly, Veronica polished. A high ponytail droops by evening unless you tease the base slightly and wrap the band twice, which I always do.
11. Sabrina And Wednesday Gothic Costume

Sabrina and Wednesday set cheerful magic against plain gothic. Sabrina wears a red fit-and-flare dress, black tights, a velvet headband and black Mary Janes, with soft blonde waves, rosy makeup and an old book or a black cat plush. Wednesday wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, opaque tights and sturdy black loafers, with two neat braids and pale, softly defined makeup, plus a mini cello case or a plain black book. Let the colours and hair carry it. The white collar is what makes Wednesday read, so I press it flat or add a detachable one if the dress doesn't have it. Both dresses take a cardigan in October.
12. Glinda And Elphaba Witch Costume

Glinda and Elphaba are the pair to choose if you want drama. Glinda wears a pale pink tulle dress, a sparkly crown, sheer gloves and glittery flats, with big polished blonde curls, glowy pink makeup and a star-topped wand. Elphaba wears a long textured black dress, a fitted cape, a pointed hat and lace-up ankle boots, with brunette hair in a low braid or bun under the hat. Green face makeup, defined brows and a muted lip finish her. Carry a vintage-style book rather than a broom. Green cream paint transfers onto every collar it touches, so I set it well with translucent powder and keep a high neckline away from the jaw.
13. Rapunzel And Belle Princess Costume

Rapunzel and Belle are two book-loving princesses that cover well and move easily. Rapunzel wears a lavender lace-up dress with puff sleeves, a flowing skirt and purple flats, with an extra-long blonde braid dotted with small artificial flowers, soft pink makeup and a foam frying pan or a sun-emblem purse. Belle wears a blue pinafore over a white blouse, a white apron and brown flats, with a low ponytail tied in blue ribbon, natural makeup, a basket and a book. A long braid gets stepped on in crowds, so I loop it up and pin it at the waist for walking and let it down for photos.
14. Cinderella And Belle Ball Gown Costume

Cinderella and Belle in their ball gowns are pure storybook glamour. Cinderella wears a pale blue gown or tulle midi, sheer gloves, a black ribbon choker and silver flats, with a polished blonde bun, a sparkly headband, cool shimmer makeup and a clear slipper prop. Belle wears a golden yellow gown with a full skirt, long gloves and matching low heels, with a curled half-up style tied in gold ribbon, warm rose makeup and an artificial rose under a clear dome. I'd pick light costume gowns over real formal gowns for this, because heavy satin and boning make sitting and dancing a chore after an hour.
15. Aurora And Maleficent Fairytale Costume

Aurora and Maleficent put soft pastel next to sharp black. Aurora wears a pink off-shoulder gown or long-sleeve maxi, a delicate gold crown and matching flats, with loose blonde curls, rosy makeup and a spinning-wheel charm or artificial rose. Maleficent wears a floor-length black dress, a purple-lined cape, a horned headpiece and comfortable pointed boots, with her hair tucked under the horns or in a sleek low bun. Sharp brows, plum shadow and a berry lip suit her, and a light cardboard staff finishes it. Horn headpieces get heavy, so I anchor them with a wide headband and pins rather than relying on the band alone.
16. Alice And Queen Of Hearts Costume

Alice and the Queen of Hearts split cleanly into blue and red. Alice wears a blue knee-length dress over a white blouse, a crisp white apron, striped tights and black Mary Janes, with a headband on soft blonde curls, natural makeup and a white rabbit plush. The Queen wears a red, black and gold dress with a structured collar, a heart crown, opaque tights and low black heels, with a high brunette updo, a strong red lip and a tiny heart under one eye. Big playing-card props suit her better than anything sharp. A stand-up collar flops unless it's interfaced, so I back a fabric one with stiff felt or a cereal-box insert.
17. Tinker Bell And Wendy Costume

Tinker Bell and Wendy pair a fairy with bedtime-story clothes. Tink wears a green fit-and-flare dress with a leaf hem, sheer wings, sparkly tights and green flats topped with pom-poms, plus a high blonde bun, fresh makeup with gold shimmer and a tiny lantern or a glitter pouch. Wendy wears a pale blue ankle-length dress with puff sleeves, a ribbon at the waist and blue flats, with soft brunette curls, a satin bow, natural makeup and a storybook. Glitter ends up on everyone nearby, so I keep it sealed inside a clear pouch rather than on skin. Small wings and a shorter hem help in busy rooms.
18. Princess Peach And Princess Daisy Costume

Peach and Daisy are bright video-game princesses, and the colour blocking carries the whole idea. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress with a full skirt, a blue pendant, a gold crown, white gloves and pink flats, with long soft blonde waves, rosy makeup and a glossy pink lip. Daisy wears a yellow and orange dress, floral jewellery, white gloves and orange flats, with a voluminous flipped brunette style and a small gold crown, plus warm peach makeup. A light star or a mushroom-shaped purse works for both. Knee-length versions move better than floor gowns, and the shapes and colours still read.
19. Barbie And Raquelle Doll Costume

Barbie and Raquelle make a doll rivalry. Barbie wears a hot-pink mini or midi, a cropped jacket, big sunglasses and pink platform sneakers, with a glossy high ponytail or smooth waves, bright pink makeup, statement earrings and a mini bag. Raquelle wears a purple or black fitted dress with metallic details, a faux-fur-trimmed jacket and silver ankle boots, with long sleek brunette hair, lavender shadow and berry gloss. A cardboard doll-box frame is a great photo prop, but leave it by the door once you're done posing. The toy look comes from very smooth hair and matched accessories, so I'd spend a few minutes on frizz control with a light serum.
20. Sailor Moon And Sailor Mars Costume

Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars wear the same uniform shape, so the skirt colour and hair do the sorting. Sailor Moon wears a white bodysuit or fitted top, a blue pleated skirt, a red bow, red knee-high boots and white gloves, with two high blonde buns and long ponytails, a gold tiara, bright eyes and a moon wand. Mars wears the white top with a purple pleated skirt, a red bow, red heels or boots and white gloves, with long straight brunette hair, a tiara, red earrings and a paper scroll. Wear shorts under both skirts. For the buns, I wrap each ponytail around a foam doughnut so they keep their size all night.
21. Sailor Venus And Sailor Mars Costume

Sailor Venus and Sailor Mars are separated by orange and purple. Venus wears a white sailor top, an orange pleated skirt, a blue chest bow, orange heels and white gloves, with a long blonde wig, a red hair bow, a gold tiara, sparkly makeup and a heart wand. Mars wears the matching top with a purple skirt, a red bow, red boots and elbow gloves, with straight glossy brunette hair, red earrings, defined liner and a paper scroll. Choose stretch tops and cushioned shoes. I'd make or buy both bows from the same satin and both tiaras from the same craft foam, because mismatched materials are what makes a pair look thrown together.
22. Buffy And Faith Vampire Slayer Costume

Buffy and Faith are practical late-1990s clothes, ideal for walking and cool October nights. Buffy wears a fitted red top, black trousers, a cropped faux-leather jacket and sturdy ankle boots, with a smooth shoulder-length blonde blowout, neutral makeup and a crossbody bag of pretend monster-hunting notes. Faith wears a dark tank, burgundy leather-look pants or jeans, a black jacket and lace-up boots, with tousled brunette waves, smoky liner and a muted lip. Keep props safe: old books, made-up ID cards or a flashlight. The contrast is polished versus rebellious, so I keep Buffy's hair neat and let Faith's go a bit messy on purpose.
23. Sandy And Rizzo Grease Costume

Sandy and Rizzo celebrate retro school style. Sandy wears a pastel cardigan over a white blouse, a full midi skirt, ankle socks and saddle shoes, with a curled blonde ponytail, peachy makeup and a vintage-style notebook. Rizzo wears a fitted black top, a pencil skirt or cropped black pants, a pink satin jacket and red flats, with short structured brunette curls or a chin-length wig, winged liner and a red lip, plus cat-eye sunglasses. Keeping Sandy in her daytime look avoids the tight finale outfit altogether. Saddle shoes can be hard to find, so two-tone oxfords or white sneakers with black tape across the middle are my stand-ins.
24. Marilyn Monroe And Audrey Hepburn Costume

Marilyn and Audrey are old-Hollywood glamour for a dressier party. Marilyn wears a white halter midi with a full skirt, pearl earrings and white or silver low heels, with a short blonde wig in sculpted curls, winged liner, glowing skin, a red lip and a vintage compact. Audrey wears a sleeveless black midi, long black gloves, pearls, oversized sunglasses and black pumps, with a high polished updo, a small sparkly hairpiece, refined liner and a soft pink lip. A plainly fake cigarette holder can work for photos, but a jewelled clutch is the simpler, family-friendly prop. Short sculpted wigs flatten in their bag, so I set the curls with pins overnight.
25. Paris Hilton And Nicole Richie Y2K Costume

Paris and Nicole bring back early-2000s fashion. Paris wears a metallic mini over fitted shorts, big sunglasses, a sparkly choker and silver platform sandals, with long straight blonde hair, frosted shadow, glossy pink lips and a tiny rhinestone bag or toy flip phone. Nicole wears a colourful halter top with low-rise flared jeans, a cropped jacket, tinted sunglasses and platform sneakers, with long polished brunette layers, bronzed makeup and neutral gloss, plus her own mini bag and phone. I'd adjust necklines and use secure layers so nobody spends the night adjusting straps. The oversized accessories and gloss are what make the Y2K point.
26. Taylor Swift And Selena Gomez Pop Star Costume

A pop-star best-friend pair can borrow from Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez without copying one tour outfit. The blonde wears a sequined bodysuit over opaque tights or a glittery mini with ankle boots, soft bangs, a red lip, a rhinestone mic and handmade friendship bracelets. The brunette wears a black sequined jumpsuit or a fitted top with wide-leg pants and platform boots, with sleek waves, a smoky eye, a deep rose lip, silver hoops and her own mic. Use familiar stage colours rather than one exact look. Friendship bracelets are a nice touch to trade with other guests, and I'd make a few spares.
27. M3GAN And Wednesday Costume

M3GAN and Wednesday are two modern characters with a shared neutral palette and very different hair. M3GAN wears a beige A-line dress over a striped long-sleeve top, white tights, a big neck bow and black Mary Janes, with a straight centre-parted blonde wig, smooth doll-like makeup and a small satchel. Wednesday wears a black collared dress, opaque tights and chunky black loafers, with two long braids, pale soft makeup and a black book or mini cello case. Skip distressed makeup and aggressive props. M3GAN's wig must be dead straight, so I'd run a flat iron over a heat-safe wig on low, or choose one already cut blunt.
28. White Swan And Black Swan Costume

White and black swans make an elegant ballet pair. The white swan wears a fitted white bodysuit with a layered tulle skirt, feathered shoulder accents, white tights and ballet flats, with a sleek blonde bun under a delicate white crown, pearly eyes and a small white fan. The black swan wears a black bodysuit with a dark tulle skirt, feathered trim, black tights and black flats, with a matching bun, a jewelled black headpiece, graphic winged liner and a plum lip. Dance shorts underneath help. Loose feathers shed all evening, so I glue them onto a ribbon base before sewing it to the shoulders rather than gluing straight to the bodysuit.
29. Dorothy And Glinda Wizard Costume

Dorothy and Glinda bring Oz together in gingham and pink. Dorothy wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white puff-sleeve blouse, ankle socks and sparkly red flats, with two braided pigtails in blue ribbon, natural makeup and a basket holding a small plush dog. Glinda wears a pale pink tulle gown, a tall silver crown, sheer gloves and glittery flats, with big polished blonde curls, glowy pink makeup and a star wand. A knee-length Glinda dress is easier on stairs. Red glitter flats are simple to make yourself: brush craft glue over old flats and press on fine glitter, then seal with a clear spray so it doesn't flake.
30. Goldilocks And Little Red Riding Hood Costume

Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood are two fairytale girls who layer well over thermals. Goldilocks wears a yellow or pale blue puff-sleeve dress, a white apron, knee socks and brown Mary Janes, with defined blonde curls tied with ribbon bows, rosy makeup and three small wooden bowls in a basket. Little Red wears a white blouse with a black or brown lace-up bodice, a knee-length skirt, opaque tights and comfortable boots, with a bright red hooded cape over long brunette waves, natural makeup and a basket. Skip the wolf and the bears; the props say enough. A felt cape is cheap, but a fleece one is warmer outdoors.
31. Good Witch And Classic Witch Costume

A good witch and a classic witch give you the pink-and-black pairing without needing named characters. The good witch wears a blush tulle midi, a sparkly cropped cape, a silver crown and glittery flats, with loose blonde curls, pink makeup with tiny stars, a light wand and a pouch of biodegradable paper stars. The classic witch wears a long black velvet-look dress, a purple cape, striped tights, a pointed hat and buckled ankle boots, with soft brunette waves under the hat, plum shadow, a berry lip and a small broom. Shared silver details link the two. A floppy witch hat stands up better with a ring of florist wire stitched inside the brim.
32. Sun And Moon Costume

A sun and moon pair turns two symbols into a glamorous duo. The sun wears a gold pleated dress or a metallic top with a flowing skirt, gold flats and a sunburst headband, with loose blonde waves, gold shadow and a small round purse. The moon wears a navy or silver dress with star appliqués, sheer tights and silver ankle boots, with a sleek ponytail or soft curls, cool silver makeup with small stars, a crescent headpiece and a matching clutch. Skip oversized back pieces that catch on doorframes. For the sunburst, I cut rays from craft foam and glue them to a plain headband, which keeps it light.
33. Day And Night Costume

Day and night is a sky-themed pair that's simple to build. Day wears a pale blue dress with soft white cloud shapes, white tights, yellow flats and a small sun headband, with a loose blonde braid, fresh makeup with gold highlight and a cloud-shaped bag or paper rainbow. Night wears a midnight-blue jumpsuit or maxi with removable silver stars, silver boots and a crescent headband, with glossy brunette waves, navy liner, silver shadow and a star clutch. Match the fabric and shape so it looks planned. Felt clouds peel off synthetic fabric when they're only glued, so I stitch them at the corners or use safety pins on the back.
34. Bumblebee And Ladybug Costume

A bee and a ladybug are bright, comfortable and easy to build from basics. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top with a black tulle skirt or fitted trousers, sheer wings, an antenna headband and black sneakers, with a high blonde ponytail, sunny yellow shadow and a flower-shaped bag. The ladybug wears a red top or dress with black dots, black tights, rounded wings, antennae and red sneakers, with two low buns or soft waves, a red lip, dotted cheeks and a leaf purse. Use compact fabric wings that sit close to the back. Iron-on felt dots look neater than marker spots and stay put through a whole night.
35. White Bunny And Black Cat Costume

A white bunny and a black cat keep animal costumes chic and public-friendly. The bunny wears a white knit dress or sweater with a pleated skirt, opaque white tights, ballet flats and a soft ear headband, with loose blonde curls, a pink nose, light whiskers and a carrot purse. The cat wears a fitted black jumpsuit or a black top with wide-leg pants, ankle boots, cat ears and a removable fabric tail, with a sleek ponytail, winged liner and fine whiskers, plus a bell choker and yarn-ball bag. Draw whiskers with a liquid liner rather than a pencil; pencil smudges as soon as you smile a lot, which you will.
36. Pink Cowgirl And Black Cowgirl Costume

Pink and black cowgirls give Western clothes a Halloween twist. The pink cowgirl wears a pink Western shirt, a white denim skirt or jeans, a rhinestone belt, a white hat and pink boots, with loose blonde waves, rosy makeup and a star purse. The black cowgirl wears a black fringed shirt, dark jeans or a midi skirt, a silver belt, a black hat and sturdy boots, with a long braid or smooth curls, neutral makeup and silver earrings. Swap bandanas in each other's colours to connect them. Skip toy weapons; hats, fringe and belts say it all. Cowboy hats slide on fine hair, so a strip of felt inside the band helps them grip.
37. Gold And Silver Disco Costume

A gold-and-silver disco pair lights up a dance floor. The blonde wears a gold sequined jumpsuit, or metallic bell-bottoms with a halter top layered over a secure tank, plus gold platform boots, big earrings and a tiny mirrored purse, with high-volume waves and shimmery bronze makeup. The brunette wears a silver jumpsuit or a sparkly top with wide-leg trousers, silver platform sneakers and geometric jewellery, with bouncy curls and cool metallic shadow. A foam record or star-shaped tinted glasses make fun props. Pick stretch fabric and stable platforms, and test them on a hard floor before the party, since new soles can be slippery.
38. Pop Star And Rock Star Costume

Pop star and rock star show two sides of stage dressing. The pop star wears a bright sequined jacket over a fitted top with a matching skirt or trousers, white ankle boots, statement earrings and a rhinestone mic, with a high blonde ponytail and colourful shimmer. The rock star wears a black faux-leather jacket, a graphic tee, plaid trousers and chunky lace-up boots, with tousled brunette waves, smoky liner, a dark berry lip and a foam guitar or second mic. Keep studs light and blunt. A little silver repeated on both outfits, a belt buckle or earrings, is what links the bright look with the dark one.
39. Fairy And Witch Costume

A fairy and a woodland witch share a natural palette. The fairy wears a pale green or lavender chiffon dress, sheer iridescent wings, a floral crown and ribbon-tied flats, with a loose blonde braid with tiny flowers, pastel shimmer and a flower wand. The witch wears a forest-green velvet-look dress, a black cropped cape, a pointed hat, striped tights and brown lace-up boots, with textured brunette waves, mossy green shadow, a neutral lip and a small broom or old storybook. Botanical details tie them together. Pick compact wings and a soft hat that comes off easily for sitting in a car or at a table.
40. Athena And Aphrodite Goddess Costume

Athena and Aphrodite close out the list with draped goddess dressing. Athena wears a white pleated maxi under a silver draped cape, a metallic belt, a leaf crown and silver lace-up sandals, with a braided brunette updo, cool neutral makeup and a scroll or owl purse in place of armour. Aphrodite wears a blush or seafoam draped dress, a gold belt, a floral crown and gold flat sandals, with long romantic blonde waves, glowy peach makeup, pearls and a shell bag or rose garland. Hidden shorts and fashion tape keep both dresses secure. Draped fabric slips off the shoulder as you move, so I tack it in place with a few hand stitches.
What Ties Two Costumes Together in a Photo
The pairs that fall flat usually aren't wrong, they just look like two separate costumes that happened to arrive together. A few small choices fix that.
- Share one material. Matching satin bows, the same silver jewellery or the same craft foam on both crowns links the outfits even when the colours are opposite.
- Match the level of effort. If one person has a full gown and the other has jeans and a T-shirt with ears, the pair looks lopsided. Agree on how dressed up you're going before anyone buys anything.
- Keep the hems at similar lengths, or deliberately different. Two knee-length skirts look planned; a mini next to a floor gown looks like an accident unless the characters really dress that way.
- Plan your stance. Pairs read best standing close with one shared prop or a linked arm. Decide who stands on which side so the hair colours are where people expect.
When heights are very different, I put the taller person in flats and the shorter one in a small heel or a taller hairstyle. It isn't about looking the same height, just close enough that both faces sit in the same part of the frame.
Walk, Sit and Pose in It Before the Party
Hair colour is a useful clue for a duo, but it shouldn't be the whole idea. A good pair also needs coordinated clothes, clear accessories, comfortable shoes, tidy hair and one or two props people can read. Go with well-known characters when you want people to get it straight away, or a symbol pair like sun and moon for more freedom. Your own hair makes prep easier, but a decent wig lets either person play either role. Before the night, walk, sit and take a few photos in the full outfit. Pin long wigs, shorten dragging hems and swap any shoe that hurts. Pick a pair you'll both enjoy wearing.
