A couple costume goes wrong when one person gets the great outfit and the other is clearly there to hold the prop. When I style pairs, I give each person a costume that would make sense on its own, then link the two with colour, a shared object or a story. The pairs below run from film and cartoon characters to classic Halloween duos, food jokes, throwbacks and simple DIY ideas. Swap the roles, change the colours or build from clothes you already own; some need an evening of crafting and some need nothing more than a closet and one good accessory.

Linking Two Costumes Without Dressing Alike
Matching outfits are the least interesting way to show you're a pair. I'd rather give each person their own costume and then build two or three clear links between them, so people get the joke when you're standing together and still know who you are when you're across the room from each other.
- Share one colour. Put a little of your partner's main colour somewhere in your outfit: a sash, a scarf, a pocket square or a hair ribbon.
- Match the level of effort. A full gown beside jeans and a hat looks unbalanced, so agree on how much each of you will make or buy.
- Give one person the shared prop, and make sure it's something you can pass back and forth.
- Keep the headpieces similar in height, or the taller one will dominate every photo.
- Agree on makeup together. If one of you wears full face paint and the other wears none, plan for that in photos and hugs.
I also try both outfits side by side in front of a mirror before the night. That's when you spot two shades of red that clash, or a hat that hides your partner's face whenever you stand close.
1. Morticia And Gomez Addams Couple Costume

Morticia and Gomez are the pair I suggest to couples who want to look sharp rather than spooky. Morticia's floor-length black dress with flared sleeves should be long enough to hide the shoes, so she seems to glide. Long centre-parted black hair, pale skin, strong brows, deep red lips and pointed black nails. Gomez wears a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, dark tie and loafers, with slicked hair and a pencil moustache drawn in brow pencil. A single silk red rose is all they carry. I'd have Morticia hem the dress to just brush the floor, not pool on it; a pooled hem collects every crumb at the party and trips you on stairs.
2. Barbie And Ken Western Couple Costume

The pink Western Barbie and Ken pair is more about colour than character. One of you wears a pink denim vest, matching flares, a white cowboy hat, star earrings and white boots, with soft blonde waves or a wig and glossy pink makeup. The other wears a black Western shirt with pink fringe, matching trousers, a white hat and black boots, with blonde hair and a pastel bandanna. Toy hobby horses or pink sunglasses are the extras. Keep the pinks in the same family; a hot pink beside a dusty pink looks like two separate costumes.
3. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couple Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia work because the black-and-white stripes and the red dress sit so well together. He wears the striped suit, a white shirt, black boots and messy pale hair, with only a little white on the face and grey shading round the eyes. She wears a layered red dress, red tights, ankle boots and a sheer red veil over dark tousled hair, with muted red lips. A handbook prop or small model house explains the theme. Lydia's veil is the piece to anchor: I sew it to a comb rather than a headband, because headbands slide back and drag the veil off when you hug.
4. Shrek And Fiona Couple Costume

Shrek and Fiona is a fun one for an earthy palette. Shrek wears a cream tunic, brown vest, plaid trousers, belt and brown boots, with a bald cap or snug green hood and rounded foam ears, plus green face paint. Fiona wears a long green medieval-style dress, a braided red wig, a small tiara and flats, with green makeup for her ogre form or rosy natural makeup for the princess version. A fake onion and a royal scroll make the props. If Shrek is painting his face green, I'd keep Fiona in princess makeup so at least one of you can kiss the other without turning green.
5. Glinda And Elphaba Couple Costume

Glinda and Elphaba are all about the pink-and-green contrast, which means each of you gets a strong costume. Glinda wears a full pink gown or a tulle skirt with a sparkly fitted top, a curled blonde wig, a crystal crown, soft pink makeup, silver flats and a star wand. Elphaba wears a long black dress, a structured cape, a pointed hat and black lace-up boots, with green face makeup, dark brows, neutral lips and a long black braid. A handmade spellbook is a nice touch. Green paint on the neck and hands goes everywhere, so if you can, take it only to the jawline and wear long black gloves.
6. Mario And Luigi Couple Costume

Mario and Luigi are the easiest pair to read and to build. Both of you wear blue denim overalls, white gloves, brown work boots and long-sleeve shirts, red for one and green for the other, with matching caps. Stitch the letter patches onto the caps; removable felt is fine for one night but curls up at the edges. Soft fake moustaches, hair tucked under the caps, rosy cheeks. Foam mushrooms, cardboard coins or plush stars. Since it's everyday clothing, it handles walking, dancing and cold weather better than almost any other duo here.
7. Daphne And Fred Couple Costume

Daphne and Fred use regular clothes in very particular colours. Daphne wears a purple dress, a lavender headband, a green scarf, pink tights and low purple shoes, with smooth red waves or a red flip wig and soft purple shadow. Fred wears a white sweater or long-sleeve polo, blue trousers, an orange neck scarf and brown loafers, with a short blonde side-parted wig. Magnifying glasses, a paper map or a notebook. Fred's ascot is what people recognise first, so pick an orange that's bright and tie it high and tight at the throat.
8. Velma And Shaggy Couple Costume

Velma and Shaggy are the pair for couples who want simple and comfortable. Velma: orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red flats, a short brown bob wig, square black glasses, freckles and natural makeup. Shaggy: an oversized green tee, loose brown trousers, black shoes and messy light brown hair, with a little brown liner for a scruffy chin if he doesn't have one. A magnifying glass and a stack of cardboard sandwiches. Thrift shops are good for the slightly dated colours, especially that olive green tee.
9. Alice And Mad Hatter Couple Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter let one partner be neat and the other gloriously messy. Alice: pale blue dress, white apron, black headband, white tights, Mary Janes, soft blonde curls and a teacup. The Hatter: colourful tailcoat, patterned vest, cropped trousers, bright socks, lace-ups, an oversized top hat, an orange curly wig and mismatched shadow. A light teapot or a stack of paper tea-party cards. Thrifted patterns make the Hatter fun, but I'd repeat just two or three colours through his outfit, ideally one of them Alice's blue, so the two of you look linked.
10. Peter Pan And Tinker Bell Couple Costume

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell share a green palette and very different shapes. Peter wears a forest-green tunic with a jagged hem, brown leggings, a slim belt, a green cap and soft brown boots, with tousled hair. Tink wears a strapless-look green dress over a fitted nude or green top for coverage, sheer wings, a blonde bun or wig, sparkly eyes and green ballet flats. I'd carry a small pouch of paper confetti for fairy dust, never loose glitter, which follows you home and stays in the car for a year. Keep the wings flexible and the skirt at the knee so doorways and chairs are no trouble.
11. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couple Costume

Red Riding Hood and the wolf are understood the moment the red cape walks in. Red wears a white blouse, a black or brown corset-style vest, a red skirt, opaque tights and ankle boots, with a bright red hooded cape, braids, rosy makeup and a wicker basket. The wolf wears grey trousers, a grey faux-fur vest, a charcoal shirt and black shoes, with ears, furry gloves, a clip-on tail and a small grey nose. It layers well for cold nights. Because the cape does so much, this is a good pair for a partner who'll only commit to ears and a vest.
12. Belle And Beast Couple Costume

Belle and the Beast can look elaborate in photos and still be thrifted. Belle wears a golden yellow gown, or a fitted yellow top with a full layered skirt, brown half-up curls with a gold ribbon, natural makeup, yellow flats and a silk rose. The Beast wears black trousers, a white ruffled shirt, a blue tailcoat, a gold vest and black shoes, with a faux-fur mane, soft ears and brown makeup blended at the brows and cheeks. Full Beast masks get hot within minutes and block most of your view, so I'd always choose the mane and makeup instead.
13. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider are purple, brown and gold. Rapunzel wears a lavender dress with puff sleeves and ribbons, purple flats, and an extra-long blonde braid with silk flowers woven in, plus freckles and soft pink lips. Flynn wears dark trousers, a cream shirt, a teal vest, a brown belt and boot covers over dark lace-ups, with tousled brown hair. A plush chameleon and a rolled paper drawing make the props. A braid that long gets stepped on in a crowd, so I loop it and pin it at the hip, letting it drop only for photos.
14. Ariel And Prince Eric Couple Costume

Ariel and Prince Eric keep the romance without a tail that stops you walking. Ariel wears a purple fitted top, a flowing sea-green skirt with a little scale texture, nude tights and flats, with a long red wavy wig, pearl clips, shimmery aqua eyes and a shell purse. Eric wears dark blue trousers, a white open-collar shirt, a red sash, black boots and neat black hair. A cardboard ship's wheel or plush sea creature completes it. Red wigs tangle faster than most because of the long loose waves, so brush it out with a wide comb before you leave and carry the comb.
15. Cinderella And Prince Charming Couple Costume

Cinderella and Prince Charming are soft blue and formal white. Cinderella wears a light blue gown, white gloves, a crystal headband, a black choker and clear or silver low heels, with a smooth high bun, icy blue shadow and pink lips. The prince wears white trousers, a fitted white military-style jacket with gold trim, a pale blue sash and black shoes, with neatly combed hair and a costume medal or shoulder cord. A small clear slipper prop says everything. White trousers show every mark, so I'd tell him to skip the red wine and pick a seat he's checked first.
16. Toy Cowboy And Shepherdess Couple Costume

The toy cowboy and shepherdess don't need complicated pieces. The cowboy wears a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, jeans, a red bandanna, a brown hat and Western boots, with a cardboard pull-string tab safely attached to the back. The shepherdess wears a blue polka-dot jumpsuit or dress with puff sleeves, a pink sash and bow, low blue shoes and blonde curls, carrying a painted foam crook. Foam crooks bend at the hook, so I tape a length of garden wire inside before painting. A little blue in both outfits ties them together.
17. Woody And Jessie Couple Costume

Woody and Jessie are two Western costumes that are sturdy enough for outdoor events. Woody: yellow plaid shirt, cow-print vest, jeans, red neckerchief, brown hat, a big belt buckle and cowboy boots. Jessie: white Western shirt with yellow cuffs, jeans, cow-print chaps or fabric panels, a red hat and brown boots, with a long red braid and freckles. Rope loops or a plush horse are the props. Cow-print panels can be cut from fleece and tied on at the thigh with ribbon, which is warmer than real chaps and much cheaper. Thermals fit underneath on a cold night.
18. Astronaut And Alien Couple Costume

An astronaut and an alien are a modern pair and easy to vary. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, a silver belt, mission patches and white sneakers, carrying a light helmet under one arm, with neat hair and a little silver shimmer. The alien wears a metallic green or silver jumpsuit, matching boots, an antenna headband and iridescent gloves, with a green bob wig or space buns, green makeup, silver liner and face gems. A cardboard control panel or a battery orb. Skip full masks so you can both talk. Matching silver details link the two.
19. Sun And Moon Couple Costume

The sun and moon are a dressy celestial pair that suits a smarter party. The sun wears gold, a dress, jumpsuit or shirt and trousers, with gold shoes and a crown of craft-foam rays, warm gold eyes and waved hair. The moon wears navy or silver with small stars, silver boots and a crescent headpiece, cool shimmer and sleek hair or a silver wig. Matching clutch bags or battery fairy-light garlands. Foam rays droop when the crown is warm against your head, so I back each ray with a strip of card. It suits any gender and any size, and the formal pieces get worn again.
20. Angel And Devil Couple Costume

An angel and devil read best with clean colour and light accessories. The angel wears a white dress, suit or jumpsuit, feather-style wings, a silver halo headband, white sneakers and pearly makeup, with soft curls or a sleek bun. The devil wears a red dress, suit or separates, red boots, a pointed tail and a simple horn headband, with red liner and glossy lips. A cloud purse and a small red heart keep it cute. Halo headbands on springs wobble constantly, which can be charming or maddening; a short stiff wire stays put. Foam horns and flexible wings are kinder for dancing than rigid ones.
21. Vampire Count And Countess Couple Costume

A vampire count and countess are about rich fabric, not blood. One wears a black suit, a burgundy vest, a white shirt, a high-collared cape, polished shoes and slicked-back hair. The other wears a long black or deep red dress, lace gloves, a velvet cape and pointed black boots, with long dark waves or a sleek updo, pale skin, smoky eyes and berry lips. Small fangs for both, no blood effects and no scary lenses. Goblets of candy or silk roses. Velvet capes are heavy, so I add a hidden hook and eye at the collar instead of relying on the tie.
22. Skeleton Bride And Groom Couple Costume

A skeleton bride and groom look smart and just a little spooky. The bride wears a black maxi dress, a short veil, white gloves and black ankle boots, with curled or pinned hair and white flower clips. The groom wears a black suit, a white shirt, a skeleton-print tie and black shoes, with a white boutonniere. Both wear the same simple black-and-white skull face, nothing graphic. Thrifted clothes can get bone shapes in fabric paint, though I'd use iron-on shapes on anything synthetic, because paint cracks on slippery fabric. Matching faces are what make you a pair.
23. Ghost Bride And Groom Couple Costume

A ghost bride and groom feel romantic and faded rather than torn or gory. She wears a soft grey or ivory thrifted dress, a light veil, pearls and grey flats, with the fabric dusted with washable grey fabric spray. He wears a grey suit, a faded vest, a pale tie and dark dress shoes. Both use cool pale makeup, grey shadow, muted lips and a little powder in the hair. Dried-look silk flowers and an old-style invitation as props. Test the fabric spray on a hidden seam first; some colours sink in more than you expect on natural fibres.
24. Frankenstein And Bride Couple Costume

Frankenstein and his Bride are mostly about two famous hair shapes. He wears a dark jacket, black shirt, loose dark trousers and chunky platform boots with light soles, plus a tall flat-top wig, green face paint, heavy brows and foam neck bolts. She wears a long white dress with wrapped fabric strips, white flats and a towering black wig with white streaks, pale makeup, arched brows and dark lips. Battery beakers make the props. Her wig is the challenge; a tall shape stays up better if it's built over a foam cone pinned to a wig cap. Patch-test the green paint on the wrist a day ahead.
25. Pirate Captain And Mermaid Couple Costume

A pirate captain and mermaid combine sea textures with bright ocean colours. The pirate wears black trousers, a white ruffled shirt, a fitted vest, a long coat, a sash, a tricorn and tall boots, with tousled hair, smoky liner and a rolled map, and no weapons. The mermaid wears a shimmering teal maxi skirt that flares like a fin, a fitted purple or turquoise top, pearls and metallic flats, with beachy waves, aqua makeup, face gems and a shell bag. I'd give the pirate a turquoise sash and the mermaid a gold necklace, so each borrows a colour from the other.
26. Ringmaster And Circus Performer Couple Costume

A ringmaster and circus performer go big on red, black and gold. The ringmaster wears black trousers, a white shirt, a red tailcoat with gold trim, a black top hat and knee boots, with slicked hair and a curled moustache if wanted. The performer wears a striped fitted top over a full-coverage bodysuit, a red tulle skirt or tailored shorts with opaque tights, lace-up ankle boots, a small feather headpiece and curled hair. A ticket roll and a light hoop instead of any real equipment. Gold trim can be ribbon glued with fabric glue; hot glue on a coat edge peels as soon as it bends.
27. Magician And Rabbit Couple Costume

A magician and rabbit is a visual joke you get in one look. The magician wears black trousers, a white shirt, a red vest, a black tailcoat, a bow tie, a top hat and shiny shoes, and fans out oversized cardboard playing cards. The rabbit wears a white jumpsuit or white sweater and trousers, a pink bow tie, white sneakers and soft ears, with a fluffy tail, a pink nose and whiskers. The magician's hat doubles as the shared prop. Long bunny ears flop forward by mid-evening, so I slide a pipe cleaner up the inside of each one.
28. Bee And Beekeeper Couple Costume

A bee and beekeeper can be built entirely from everyday clothes, which makes it cheap and comfortable. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black trousers or a tulle skirt over leggings, sheer wings, antennae and black sneakers, with yellow shadow and a small fuzzy tail. The beekeeper wears beige utility trousers, a white button-down, a tan jacket, work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh, face clearly visible underneath. A cardboard honey jar or silk flowers. Real honey is a sticky mistake waiting to happen, so keep it out.
29. Butterfly And Gardener Couple Costume

A butterfly and gardener give one of you wings and the other a practical outfit. The butterfly wears a fitted black top with black leggings or a simple dress, bright patterned wings, antennae and black ankle boots, with eye makeup matched to the wings, face gems and an updo. The gardener wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, rubber-style boots, gloves and a straw hat. The gardener carries a watering can full of silk flowers; the butterfly holds a flower purse. Keep the wings compact. A silk flower pinned to the gardener's hat band links the pair.
30. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couple Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is a classic food pair that runs on casual basics. One of you wears tan under a foam-board bread slice with a smooth brown centre; the other wears burgundy or purple under a matching slice with a jelly-coloured centre. Coordinated sneakers, natural makeup and hair kept clear of the panels, with brown and purple caps if you like. Hang the panels on adjustable shoulder straps so you can sit. Foam board dents easily, so I paint both sides and seal the edges with tape; it holds its shape far longer. Cardboard spreaders with rounded edges finish it.
31. Ketchup And Mustard Couple Costume

Ketchup and mustard is the last-minute pair: one of you in all red, the other in all yellow, each with a pointed foam bottle cap. Add plain white felt labels to the shirts with generic wording so they read from across the room. Natural makeup and neat hair keep it clean. A cardboard picnic food prop, or a small crossbody bag in the opposite colour, which is a nice way to link you. Hoodies and joggers work for cold nights. Felt letters peel off a polyester tee, so I stitch around them or use cotton shirts.
32. Milk And Cookies Couple Costume

Milk and cookies are a cosy, non-spooky pair with soft handmade pieces. Milk wears all white with white sneakers and a rectangular carton made from foam board, plus a striped paper-straw headband. The cookie wears tan trousers, a brown shirt and a round cookie panel with dark felt chips, brown sneakers and a matching cap. Fabric shoulder straps keep both panels secure and easy to remove. A small tray or reusable cup as a shared prop. The carton's top edge sits close to the chin, so I cut the neck opening generously or it digs in when you look down.
33. Tooth Fairy And Dentist Couple Costume

The tooth fairy and dentist are clever and wholesome, which makes them good for school and work events. The tooth fairy wears a white or pale blue dress, glittery wings, silver ballet flats and a tiny crown, with a sleek bun, cool shimmer and a wand topped with a foam tooth. The dentist wears blue scrubs, white sneakers, a disposable-style cap and a white lab coat, with a name badge and an oversized cardboard toothbrush. Skip realistic tools, face masks and anything sharp. A tooth-shaped crossbody bag joins the two.
34. Tourist And Statue Couple Costume

The tourist and statue is a costume you perform together. The tourist wears a loud floral shirt, khaki shorts, white socks, sneakers, sunglasses and a sun hat, with a camera, map and belt bag. The statue wears a draped grey dress, a grey suit or a layered tunic with grey tights and grey shoes, grey cosmetic makeup on visible skin, a sculpted updo and a foam pedestal sign. The statue freezes every time the tourist lifts the camera. Use skin-safe grey makeup, set it with powder and blot through the evening; grey transfer shows up badly on light clothing.
35. Bob Ross And Happy Tree Couple Costume

Bob Ross and a happy tree are funny and very easy to build. Bob wears jeans, a pale button-down, a brown belt and casual shoes, with a big curly brown wig, a soft costume beard, a cardboard palette and clean brushes. The tree wears brown trousers and a brown top under a light canopy of green tulle or felt, with leaf hair clips, green eye makeup, brown sneakers and small artificial birds fixed to the branches. Keep the tree narrow enough for doorways and chairs. That wig is the giveaway; brush it out with fingers only, since a brush flattens the curl.
36. Clark Kent And Lois Lane Couple Costume

Clark Kent and Lois Lane are office clothes with one reveal. Clark wears dark trousers, a white button-down, a loose tie, black glasses and polished shoes, with the shirt pulled open over a blue top with a handmade red-and-yellow shield and one curl at the forehead. Lois wears a tailored skirt or trousers, a blouse, a fitted blazer and comfortable pumps or loafers, with a press badge, a notebook and a foam microphone. A folded newspaper connects you. I'd pin Clark's shirt open with two hidden safety pins at the right width, because a free-hanging shirt either closes or falls off the shoulder.
37. Princess Leia And Han Solo Couple Costume

Princess Leia and Han Solo use simple neutral clothing. Leia wears a long white dress with wide sleeves, white boots and a silver belt, with brown hair in the two side buns or a secure wig, and soft natural makeup. Han wears navy trousers, a cream shirt, a black vest, dark boots and a low utility belt with no weapons, plus tousled hair and a little stubble makeup. A plush space creature or a light spaceship prop. The side buns are heavy on their own hair, so I wrap each around a hair donut and pin it through from three directions.
38. Jack And Sally Couple Costume

Jack and Sally lean heavily on face colour, so the makeup decides whether the night goes well. Jack wears a black pinstripe suit with big lapels, a white shirt, a bat bow tie and black dress shoes, with a smooth bald cap, white makeup, dark eye shading and a simple painted smile. Sally wears a knee-length patchwork dress, opaque tights and black ankle boots, with a long red wig, blue-toned makeup, soft stitch lines and dark berry lips. A silk flower and a little fabric ghost dog. Bald caps are hot, so I'd keep Jack's under an hour indoors or use white face paint with slicked hair instead.
39. Sandy And Danny Grease Couple Costume

Sandy and Danny are fitted black separates and very particular hair. Sandy wears high-waisted black trousers, an off-the-shoulder black top layered for coverage, a wide belt, red shoes and gold hoops, with big blonde curls, a wing and red lips. Danny wears black trousers, a fitted black tee, a leather-look jacket and polished black shoes, with a high, neat pompadour. A school pennant or a dance programme prop. Stretch fabrics make it more comfortable than it looks. That pompadour needs a strong pomade and a hairdryer, and a small comb in his pocket for the bathroom touch-up.
40. Disco Couple Costume

A disco couple is two shiny outfits sharing one accent colour. One of you wears a metallic flared jumpsuit, platform-style shoes, big earrings and a wide belt; the other wears a patterned satin shirt, white or silver bell-bottoms, tinted glasses and matching platforms. Big curls, feathered hair or wigs, sparkly eyes and glossy lips. A mirror-ball purse or a battery dance-floor sign. Put silver somewhere in both outfits, even a belt buckle. I'd go with stable platforms or flat shoes with a platform look, because two people falling off tall soles at once is not the photo you want.
When Only One of You Loves Dressing Up
Plenty of couples have one keen costumer and one reluctant one. Rather than forcing a costume on the second person, I pick a pair where one role is mostly ordinary clothes: Fred, Velma, the beekeeper, the gardener, Clark Kent, the tourist and Han Solo can all be worn by someone who would rather feel like themselves. The keen partner takes the wings, the wig and the makeup.
It helps to give the reluctant partner one piece they actually like, such as a good hat, a jacket they'll wear again or a prop they can play with. People who hate costumes usually hate feeling silly, and a costume made of real clothes avoids that.
Green Paint, White Shirts and Slow Dances
Couples stand close, hug and lean into photos, which is hard on face makeup. Green, grey and white paints on Shrek, Elphaba, Frankenstein, the statue and Jack will end up on your partner's collar unless you set them. I apply cream paint in thin layers, press translucent powder over the top and finish with a light mist of setting spray, then blot rather than wipe during the night.
Keep the paint off the neck where it meets a collar, carry a pack of makeup wipes for small accidents, and if one of you is wearing white, have them stand on the side of the unpainted cheek for photos. Patch-test any paint or adhesive on the inside of the wrist a day ahead, and take everything off with an oil-based cleanser before bed.
Start With the Pair You'd Both Say Yes To
The pairs that work best start with something you both like and an amount of preparation you'll both enjoy. Link the two costumes through colour, theme or a shared prop, but give each person a full outfit. Test the makeup early, pin the wigs and headpieces, keep the props light and wear shoes you can stand in for hours. Thrifted clothes, closet basics, removable trim and a few craft supplies cover almost every pair here. Swap the roles, adjust the shapes to suit both of you, and go with the one that makes you both grin.
