A couples costume only has to do two things well: read as a pair the second you walk in, and still feel comfortable late in the evening. Most of the 40 pairings below start from clothes you probably own, plus a thrift-store piece or two and some felt, foam or cardstock. You'll find Halloween classics, food puns, film and TV duos, and a few that are really just matching pajamas with a story. For each one I've noted what to wear, how to handle hair and makeup, and which prop is worth making, so neither of you ends up looking like the afterthought. When I style a pair, I decide early who carries the joke and who carries the color, because that split is what makes two outfits look planned.

Splitting the Joke and the Color Between You
When a couples costume falls flat, it's usually because both people dressed in the same idea at half strength. When I plan a pair, I give each person one job. One carries the color, the other carries the joke or the prop, and the two of you meet in a single shared detail.
- Pick one connecting color and put it on both of you in the same place: a scarf, a hat band or a belt bag. People notice the repeat before they work out the costume.
- Match the silhouette, not the outfit. Two jumpsuits, or two sweater-and-pants sets, look planned even when the colors are opposites.
- Decide who holds the prop. One clear prop between two people is easier to read, and easier to carry, than two half props.
- Agree which side each of you stands on for photos. Most of these pairings only make sense side by side, and the order matters to the joke: salt then pepper, rock then roll.
Try everything on together a few days before. I look at a pair from the far end of a hallway; if I can't tell what you are from there, the shared detail needs to be bigger, not more detailed.
1. Witch And Black Cat Couples Costume

The witch and black cat is the pairing I suggest when a couple says they have nothing to wear, because most of it is already hanging in a closet. The witch needs a plain black dress, striped tights, ankle boots and a pointed hat, then a smoky eye, dark lipstick, loose curls and a light craft-store broom. The cat goes all black in stretch jeans or leggings, a fitted top and sneakers, with an ear headband, an eyeliner nose and whiskers. Pin the fabric tail to a belt loop with two safety pins rather than one, or it swings round to the front within the hour. A small bell collar settles the cat role, and one shared purple accent, the hat band on one and the collar on the other, connects you without looking matched head to toe.
2. Ghost And Pumpkin Couples Costume

A friendly ghost and a pumpkin are about as Halloween as two people can get, and both are warm enough for a porch or a street party. The ghost wears white pants, a white sweatshirt, white sneakers and a light white cape or poncho, with pale powder, soft gray shadow and temporary white hair color. The pumpkin wears an orange sweater, black pants, orange shoes and a green beanie for the stem. I cut the jack-o'-lantern face from black felt and attach it with removable fabric tape, since glued felt tends to peel off a stretchy knit as soon as it's pulled on. Orange blush and a little green on the lids carry the color without full face paint, and a trick-or-treat bucket each gives your hands something to do in photos.
3. Classic Vampire Couples Costume

Vampires look sharpest when the clothes do the work, so skip the giant cape. One of you wears a black button-down, tailored trousers, loafers and a deep red vest; the other a long black dress, dark boots and a burgundy shawl. Pale foundation, a soft smoky eye and berry lipstick suit both faces, with smooth hair or loose vintage waves. The fangs are what tell everyone what you are, so buy a pair that fits and practice talking in them before the night, because loose cheap ones make everyone lisp. Dark pendants or red stones link the outfits. Keep the makeup elegant rather than gory, and a long black coat over either look keeps you warm without breaking character.
4. Matching Skeleton Couples Costume

Matching skeletons are easy to move in and still read from the far end of a room. Start with black long-sleeve tops, black jeans or leggings and black sneakers or boots. Felt bones held on with removable fabric tape let you reuse the tops later, and printed skeleton shirts are the shortcut. On the face, go white around the eyes and nose with clean black lines along the cheeks, stylized rather than frightening. I set the white with translucent powder before adding any black, otherwise the black drags gray streaks through it. Slicked hair, braids or silver spray push the face forward, black gloves with white bones finish the hands, and a few felt pieces edged in reflective tape help if you're walking outside after dark.
5. Cowboy And Cowgirl Couples Costume

Cowboy and cowgirl is a closet costume for most couples. Jeans, plaid or denim shirts, leather belts and boots you can actually walk in, then two cowboy hats in different neutral shades and red bandanas tied loose at the neck. Give one of you a denim vest and the other a suede-look fringe jacket or long cardigan so you don't look like twins. Hair stays natural, waved or braided, and makeup stays fresh with warm bronzer and a muted red lip. I'd make the lasso from soft craft cord, coiled and tied off; real rope is heavy and scratchy to carry all evening. It adapts to any gender and takes a jacket on a cold October night.
6. Bee And Beekeeper Couples Costume

The bee and beekeeper are understood at a glance, and the props are cheap. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black pants, sneakers, sheer wings and an antenna headband, with gold shadow, rosy cheeks and an eyeliner dot on the nose. The beekeeper wears beige pants, a white button-down, work boots and a light utility jacket. For the veil, I clip or stitch white mesh around the brim of a neutral sun hat so it hangs just past the chin, then fold it up over the brim to eat. Gardening gloves, a wooden honey dipper and a small felt bee on the jacket finish the pair. Choose wings with bendable frames, since rigid ones crack the first time someone hugs you in a busy room.
7. Chef And Lobster Couples Costume

This is the funny one that needs almost no crafting. The chef wears black pants, a white shirt or chef jacket, slip-resistant shoes and a tall paper or fabric hat, carrying a light mixing bowl and wooden spoon. The lobster wears a red hoodie, red sweatpants and red sneakers, with soft felt claws fixed to gloves and bendy red antennae stitched to the hood. Red blush and a little matching shadow beat full face paint here, because the hood rubs against your cheeks all night. A cardboard cooking pot makes the photo, but keep it light and leave it by the door once the pictures are done. The joke only lands when both of you play along.
8. Tourist Couples Costume

Tourists are my favorite last-minute answer, because every piece is a vacation leftover. Bright printed shirts, khaki shorts or relaxed pants, tall socks and walking shoes, then sun hats, sunglasses, belt bags and a cardboard camera. One of you carries a folded paper map; the other wears binoculars made from two painted cardboard tubes glued side by side. A stripe of sunscreen-white makeup down the nose sells the sunburnt-visitor joke, and hair goes under caps or visors. Coordinate through the floral prints rather than identical shirts, pin a few souvenir badges to the bags, and you have a costume nobody needs to fix all night.
9. Camp Counselor Couples Costume

Camp counselors read sporty and a bit nostalgic, indoors or out. Khaki shorts or cargo pants, solid T-shirts in one shared color, crew socks and hiking sneakers, with bomber jackets or zip-ups if it's cool. Make the badges from colored cardstock with removable tape and give each of you a job on them, activities counselor and nature counselor. Caps, flashlights and clipboards carry the theme. I keep the whistles silent at a crowded party; one blast near someone's ear ends the bit fast. Practical ponytails or braids, a few faux freckles and a streak of green paint on each cheek finish it.
10. Lifeguard Couples Costume

Lifeguards need nothing beyond sporty basics. Red athletic shorts or track pants, white T-shirts and supportive white sneakers, with a red zip-up for outdoor parties. Whistles, sport sunglasses, visors and belt bags holding your keys and phone all suit the role. A foam rescue float is the clearest prop, though I'd choose a short one, because a long tube clips people in a packed kitchen. Ponytails or swept-back hair, waterproof mascara and a little bronzer keep the faces outdoorsy. The red and white do the matching, so each of you can pick different accessories, and every piece goes back into the gym bag in November.
11. Detective Couples Costume

Two old-fashioned detectives are a layering costume, which makes them a smart pick for a cold night. Neutral trousers, collared shirts, knit vests and long trench coats, with loafers or lace-up boots you can walk in. One wears a checked cap, the other a structured fedora or beret. Magnifying glasses, pocket notebooks and manila folders are the props, and a few paper clues tucked into coat pockets make better photos. I keep both outfits in brown, camel, gray and cream; once a bright color sneaks in, the pair stops looking like it walked out of the same old film. Natural makeup and neat hair under the hats are enough, and a thrift-store trench is often the only piece to hunt for.
12. Matching Mime Couples Costume

Mimes get a lot from very little: striped shirts, black pants, suspenders, white gloves, black shoes, black berets and red neck scarves. Apply the white face makeup thin and build it in layers, then define eyes and brows with black liner and add a small red lip or heart. A thick coat of white cream is the version that cracks and smears onto the scarf by midnight. Tuck hair under the beret or smooth it back. Give each of you a different prop, an empty picture frame or a small striped umbrella, and rehearse a couple of silent gestures for photos. Drop the silence the moment someone needs to hear you. Skip the face makeup entirely and the stripes and berets still tell the story.
13. Nerd Couples Costume

The nerd pairing is cheap, comfortable and built almost entirely from thrift racks. High-waisted pants or pleated skirts, tucked-in button-downs, bow ties, suspenders, and loafers with the socks showing on purpose. Add oversized nonprescription glasses, calculator watches and a row of pens in the shirt pocket. One of you carries a stack of notebooks, the other a homemade science project or flash cards. I pull the waistband a couple of inches higher than feels right, and that one change does more than any accessory. Mix argyle, plaid and solids between you instead of matching, finish with neat side parts and a few brown-eyeliner freckles, and it's tame enough for school or office parties.
14. Scarecrow And Crow Couples Costume

Scarecrow and crow suit a chilly evening, since both costumes are made of layers. The scarecrow wears overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots and a floppy straw hat, with raffia or tan felt strips tied at wrists and ankles, rosy cheeks, an eyeliner stitched smile and loose braids. The crow wears black pants, a black sweater, boots and a cape of overlapping felt feathers. I cut the feathers as long ovals and stitch only the top edge, so they lift when you move instead of lying flat like scales. A black headband with a short felt beak, dark eye makeup and slicked hair finish the crow; keep the beak short enough to sit clear of the eyes. A bundle of artificial wheat is the shared prop.
15. Farmer And Farm Animal Couples Costume

One of you is the farmer and the other picks the animal, a cow, pig or sheep, depending on what's in the closet. The farmer wears denim overalls, a checked shirt, work boots, a straw hat and a bandana, with gardening gloves and a basket of artificial vegetables. For a cow, a white sweatshirt with removable black felt spots goes over black pants, plus an ear headband, a fabric tail, black sneakers and a softly painted nose. I cut the spots as uneven blobs in different sizes, because neat circles start to look like a dalmatian. Braids or a low ponytail suit the farmer, and the animal tucks hair behind the ears so the headband shows. Swap to pink for a pig or white fleece for a sheep.
16. Sun And Moon Couples Costume

Sun and moon is a good first DIY project because both headpieces are flat. The sun wears yellow, a dress or a shirt and pants, with gold flats or sneakers, warm gold shadow, highlighter and loose waves. The moon wears silver, navy or white with silver shoes, cool silver shadow, a sleek bun or curls, and small foil stars taped to the top. For the rays and the crescent, I glue metallic cardstock onto thin craft foam before cutting; cardstock on its own bends forward and droops by the end of the night. A matching wand each helps the photos. Keep the shapes similar, two jumpsuits or two sweater-and-pants sets, so the pair looks planned.
17. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couples Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is just colored basics plus two foam-board panels. Peanut butter wears tan pants, a beige sweatshirt and brown sneakers with a tan beanie; jelly goes purple or red top to toe with a matching cap. Cut two bread-slice shapes from white foam board, paint a tan crust edge and hang them from shoulder straps so they sit front and back like sandwich boards. I cut them narrower than the wearer's shoulders. Any wider and you turn sideways at every doorway, and the corners crush in a crowd. Keep makeup natural with one warm or berry accent each. Stand together and the sandwich is done.
18. Salt And Pepper Couples Costume

Salt and pepper suits couples who would rather not wear anything loud. One of you dresses in white or pale gray, the other in black or charcoal, in matching shapes: T-shirts and jeans, casual jumpsuits, or sweaters and comfortable pants, with coordinated sneakers. The shaker hats are light silver cardstock rolled into a short cylinder with small holes cut across the top. I glue a strip of felt inside the band so the hat grips your hair instead of sliding. Silver shadow for salt and soft smoky gray for pepper, or temporary white and dark hair spray for contrast, and cardboard spoons if you want a prop. Nearly everything goes back into your closets afterward.
19. Milk And Cookies Couples Costume

Milk and cookies is sweet without a bulky body suit. Milk wears white pants, a white shirt and white sneakers under a blue-and-white carton hat folded from cardstock, with a striped paper straw fixed firmly to it and cool blue makeup. The cookie wears tan pants, a beige sweatshirt and brown shoes, with dark brown felt chips across the front and a round cookie headband or crossbody sign. I stitch each chip through its center only, so the sweatshirt still stretches over your head. Warm brown makeup and soft curls suit the cookie, and a light serving tray is the shared prop. Leave the cardboard carton body at home if you plan to sit or dance.
20. Ketchup And Mustard Couples Costume

Ketchup and mustard is all about color, so each of you needs one clean shade. Red pants, sweatshirt and sneakers for one; the same in yellow for the other. The squeeze caps are white craft foam rolled into a cone and glued to a headband, and I'd choose a wide headband, because a narrow one tips forward under even a light cap. Red lipstick or blush for ketchup, gold shadow for mustard, and hair tied back so the cap sits steady. White gloves and matching belt bags tidy the finish. If you want the roles clearer, a small felt tomato and a few felt mustard seeds beat printed labels.
21. Rock And Roll Couples Costume

Rock and roll is the pun pair for couples who'd rather not dress as film characters. The rock wears gray jeans, a gray hoodie and gray sneakers with removable felt stone shapes, gray makeup at the temples, tousled hair and a light foam rock to carry. The roll wears tan pants, a cream sweater and brown shoes, with soft felt spirals on the front and a round bread-shaped foam hat. I stuff the felt stones with a pinch of fiberfill before stitching them down, so they look rounded instead of like flat gray patches. Keep every piece soft enough to sit on. Stand side by side and people get the joke, then usually groan, which is the point.
22. Rain Cloud And Rainbow Couples Costume

A rain cloud and a rainbow look like more work than they are. The cloud wears gray pants, a gray sweatshirt and silver sneakers, with clusters of polyester stuffing across the shoulders, short blue ribbon raindrops hanging from the hem, silver shadow and temporary gray or white hair. Hot glue alone won't hold stuffing to a sweatshirt for long, so I hand-tack each cluster with a few loose stitches. The rainbow wears colorful stripes, white shoes and a curved felt rainbow headband, with bright liner, rosy cheeks and a white tulle overskirt as the clouds at its base. Keep both headpieces small. Next to all that gray, the stripes look brighter in photos.
23. Gardener And Flower Couples Costume

The gardener and the flower are cheerful and easy. The gardener wears overalls, a green plaid shirt, work boots and a floppy sun hat, with gloves, a small watering can and seed packets. The flower wears green pants or tights, a green top and matching sneakers, plus a felt petal collar and flower headpiece. I make each petal from two layers of felt stitched together, which keeps it standing out; a single layer flops after an hour. Rosy blush and a little inner-corner shimmer suit the flower, with long hair braided like a stem or short hair tucked under the headpiece. The shared green ties the two together.
24. Astronaut And Alien Couples Costume

Astronaut and alien gives you a space theme without a sealed helmet. The astronaut wears white cargo pants, a white jacket and white sneakers, with silver tape details, homemade mission patches, gloves and a clear hood-style helmet that leaves plenty of airflow. The alien wears a metallic silver or green top, matching pants, platform sneakers and an antenna headband, with green or silver shadow, highlighter, face gems and a sleek bun or short metallic wig. I'd never put anyone in a closed plastic bubble; it fogs from your breath within minutes and cuts your hearing and side vision. A cardboard control panel and a foam planet are the props, and bright party lights make the silver glow.
25. Vintage Doll Couple Costume

Two vintage dolls stay sweet rather than creepy if the makeup stays soft. One wears a collared dress, cardigan, knee socks and Mary Janes; the other cropped trousers, a button-down, suspenders, a bow tie and polished loafers. Round rosy blush, defined lashes and a small heart-shaped lip go on both faces, with smooth curls, braids or side-parted waves. The wind-up keys are light silver foam, and I fix each one through a felt tab with a safety pin so it doesn't drag the back of the garment down. Pastels make you look like part of the same toy box. Pose stiffly for photos, but wear stretch fabrics so moving between them is easy.
26. Barbie And Ken Couples Costume

Barbie and Ken have endless outfits, but the pink leisure version is the easiest to pull together. Barbie wears a bright pink dress or top and skirt, white sneakers, big sunglasses and a high ponytail or smooth blonde wig, with glossy pink lips and softly defined eyes. Ken wears pastel shorts, a striped button-down, white sneakers and a light sweater knotted over the shoulders, with a neat side part. Matching pink visors or belt bags join the two. I aim for doll-like color rather than recreating one exact scene, since everyone carries a different picture of this pair. Each of you can choose the shape you're comfortable in and still look the part.
27. Gomez And Morticia Addams Couples Costume

Gomez and Morticia are the pairing for a dressier party. Morticia needs a long black dress, black heels or pointed flats, deep red lipstick and long center-parted black hair or a wig. Gomez wears a dark pinstriped suit, white shirt, black tie and polished shoes, with slicked-back hair and a thin mustache drawn on with makeup. Pale foundation and softly shadowed eyes suit both of them. Morticia carries an artificial rose with the bloom snipped off, and Gomez holds a rolled brown-paper cigar. I fit Morticia's dress close through the hips and long to the floor, because that narrow line is what people recognize first; hem it to just touch the ground in the shoes you'll actually wear, so it never trips you.
28. Wednesday And Enid Duo Costume

Wednesday and Enid run on contrast, black against pastel. Wednesday wears a black collared dress, opaque tights, chunky loafers and two long braids, with pale makeup and a soft smoky eye. Enid wears a pastel striped sweater, a colorful skirt, patterned tights and bright sneakers, with loose blonde waves or a wig tipped in temporary pink and blue, colorful liner and glossy lips. Wednesday carries a small vintage-style book; Enid wears a fuzzy pastel backpack. I braid Wednesday's hair tight and low behind the ears, and the white collar and those braids identify her faster than anything else in the outfit. Soft knits keep both of you comfortable for hours.
29. Shaggy And Velma Couples Costume

Shaggy and Velma come together from thrift basics. Shaggy needs a loose green T-shirt, brown pants, black sneakers and messy medium-brown hair or a shaggy wig, with a little beard shading in brown makeup if you like. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red Mary Janes or flats, plus a short brown bob wig, square nonprescription glasses and natural makeup. Shaggy carries a painted foam sandwich; Velma a magnifying glass or notebook. A cheap bob wig sheds and tangles out of the bag, so I brush it with a wide-tooth comb and a light mist of conditioning spray before trimming the fringe straight. Orange, red, green and brown do the rest.
30. Mario And Luigi Duo Costume

Mario and Luigi are the same costume in two colors, which is why they look coordinated straight away. Mario wears denim overalls, a red long-sleeve shirt, brown work boots, white gloves and a red cap; Luigi swaps in green. Felt initial patches go on the caps, and I stitch them on, because glued felt on a curved cap tends to lift at the edges. Softly drawn mustaches, long hair in low buns under the caps, and props like foam stars, cardboard coins or a plush mushroom finish the pair. Keep accessories small so you can walk easily, and swap in thermal shirts for an outdoor event on a cold night.
31. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couples Costume

Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf are a fairytale pair in cozy fall layers. Red wears a white blouse, a black or brown skirt, a red hooded cape, tights and sturdy ankle boots, with soft waves or braids, rosy makeup and a natural red lip, carrying a small wicker basket lined with gingham. The wolf wears gray jeans, a gray sweater, boots and a faux-fur vest, plus soft ears, a fabric tail, gray shadow, a painted black nose and tousled gray hair. New faux fur sheds hard on its first wear, so I shake the vest out and lint-roll it outdoors the day before. Keep the wolf friendly, and put a red plaid scarf on the wolf to link the two.
32. Alice And Mad Hatter Couples Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter pair one clean costume with one loud one. Alice wears a light blue dress, white apron, white tights, black flats and a black ribbon headband, with soft pink makeup and blonde hair or a wig in loose waves. The Hatter layers patterned trousers, a bright vest, a colorful jacket, a bow tie, striped socks and lace-up shoes, with a tall foam hat, orange curls and vivid but friendly eye makeup. A teacup is the shared prop. When I mix prints for the Hatter, I repeat the same two or three colors in every piece, and that repetition is what makes the clash look deliberate instead of random.
33. Clark Kent And Lois Lane Couples Costume

Clark Kent and Lois Lane come straight out of a work wardrobe. Clark wears dark trousers, a white button-down, a loosened tie, black dress shoes and rectangular glasses, with the shirt opened a little to show a blue top carrying a red-and-yellow shield shape. One loose curl at the forehead is the detail people notice. Lois wears a pencil skirt or tailored pants, a blouse, blazer and comfortable pumps or loafers, with smooth waves, natural makeup, a reporter's notebook, a cardstock press badge and a messenger bag. I hold Clark's shirt open at the right point with a hidden safety pin so it doesn't button itself shut every time he moves. Modest and comfortable, it suits a workplace party.
34. Sandy And Danny Couples Costume

Sandy and Danny are 1950s separates that may already be in your closets. Sandy wears black ankle pants, a fitted black top, a cropped jacket and red flats or low heels, with big curls, winged liner and bright red lipstick. Danny wears black jeans, a fitted black T-shirt, a faux-leather jacket and black boots or sneakers, with a glossy quiff. I set Sandy's curls the night before and brush them out on the day, because curls done with a hot tool in fine hair often drop within a few hours. White socks or a small red accent connect the two, sunglasses and a comb make the props, and fitted is fine as long as you can still sit down.
35. Wayne And Garth Duo Costume

Wayne and Garth are the answer when comfort and a deadline both matter. Wayne wears distressed jeans, a black T-shirt, sneakers and a black baseball cap over long dark hair or a wig, maybe with a plaid shirt tied at the waist. Garth wears faded jeans, a graphic T-shirt, an open plaid shirt, glasses and casual sneakers, with long blonde hair or a tousled wig. Makeup stays minimal, perhaps slightly fuller brows. Air guitar poses do the job a prop would. If there's a long wig under that cap, I pin it at the crown first, since the brim levers a loose wig backward every time you laugh. It's loose clothing all round, so you can sit and dance for hours.
36. Secret Agent Couples Costume

Secret agents make a clean formal costume. Black suits or black blazers and trousers, crisp white shirts, black ties and polished black shoes, with dark sunglasses and an earpiece made from a coil of clear craft cord. Slim folders under one arm and small metallic badges pinned inside the jackets give you something to flash in photos. Smooth buns, tidy ponytails or combed side parts, and clean matte makeup with neutral lips. Leave out anything that resembles real equipment or a weapon. If full suits feel like too much, black jeans and black jackets keep the white shirt, black tie and sunglasses formula. I'd test the sunglasses in a dim room first, because dark lenses at a low-lit party turn every step into a guess.
37. 1980s Workout Couples Costume

An 1980s workout pair is bright and easy to move in. Layer neon tanks over fitted T-shirts or bodysuits, add leggings or short shorts over tights, then leg warmers, sweatbands, white crew socks and supportive sneakers. Pick contrasting neons so you share a palette without matching. High or side ponytails with scrunchies, vivid shadow, pink blush and glossy lips finish the faces, and foam dumbbells are the safe prop. Everything stretches and breathes, which is why I point couples who dance toward this one. Leg warmers slide down bare skin, so wear them over the tights. A windbreaker covers you outside.
38. 1990s Grunge Couples Costume

Nineties grunge is relaxed, works for any gender and comes almost entirely from thrift racks. Loose jeans, a faded T-shirt, an oversized plaid flannel and worn sneakers or lace-up boots, plus knit beanies, chain-style necklaces and small backpacks. One of you ties the flannel round the waist; the other wears it open over a thermal. Tousled hair or tinted ends, smudged brown liner and muted lips are all the makeup it needs. Match through similar denim washes and plaids that share a color. I buy the flannel a size or two up, because a neatly fitted one just reads as a weekend shirt. A painted cardboard music player is the prop, and it suits every size and build.
39. Disco Couples Costume

A disco couple sparkles and still moves well. One of you wears flared pants, a metallic top, platform-style shoes and a wide belt; the other a jumpsuit or patterned shirt with flares and heeled boots. Thrift stores are full of silver, gold, purple and bright blue pieces. Fluffy curls or a rounded retro shape, shimmer shadow, glossy lips and highlighter, plus tinted glasses and a foam disco ball for photos. Flares are where this one goes wrong. I hem them so they just clear the floor in the exact shoes you'll wear, because a dragging hem gets stepped on all night. Stable platforms beat tall ones if you're dancing or walking between parties.
40. Sleepwalker Couples Costume

Sleepwalkers are the lowest-effort pair here and among the comfiest. Modest pajama sets, long robes, fuzzy socks and slippers with rubber soles, then sleeping caps, eye masks pushed up onto the forehead and lightly tousled hair. Pale powder, soft blue-gray shadow and smudged liner give a tired, dreamy face rather than a scary one. One of you carries a pillow, the other a stuffed animal or a battery candle. Matching stripes or plaid make it read as a pair. I insist on the rubber soles, since plain fabric slippers are slick on a kitchen floor and useless on a wet sidewalk. Thermals underneath keep you warm outdoors, and you get to keep the pajamas.
What Holds Felt, Foam and Cardstock Through a Long Night
Nearly every pair on this list has something stuck onto clothing: felt spots, ears, tails, foam caps, paper hats. The attachments fail long before the costumes do, so they deserve as much thought as the outfits.
Glue or stitches
Hot glue is fine on cardstock and foam, but it lets go of knit fabric as the garment stretches, and it turns brittle in cold air outdoors. On sweatshirts and T-shirts I either hand-tack pieces with a few stitches or use iron-on fusible web for flat felt shapes. Removable fabric tape is the choice when you want the top back afterward, though it needs firm pressure and a test wear.
Headbands and hats
Anything on a headband wants a wide band and a bobby pin crossed through it into your hair on each side. A strip of felt glued inside a cardstock hat gives it grip. I keep headpieces light enough to forget; if you notice the weight after ten minutes, it'll be in your hand by the second hour.
Tails and panels
Pin tails to a belt loop or waistband with two safety pins set crosswise. Foam-board panels hang best from wide ribbon or elastic straps, and I tape their edges so they don't snag tights or knit sleeves.
Dinner, Dancing and a Partner's Clean Shirt
A date night in costume has problems a solo costume doesn't. You'll hug, lean in for photos and probably eat. White makeup and cream color transfer onto a partner's collar the first time you stand cheek to cheek, so I set any face makeup with translucent powder, mist a setting spray over it, and keep the heaviest color away from the jawline.
- Eat before the makeup goes on, or wear a lip color that survives a drink; glossy and berry shades wear off unevenly.
- Check that each of you can sit in the car. Tall hats, foam-board panels and wings usually come off for the drive.
- Jumpsuits and overalls turn a bathroom trip into a project. Trousers and a top are easier if you're out for hours.
- Share one small kit: safety pins, bobby pins, blotting papers, a mini lint roller and a spare hair tie.
None of this shows in the photos, but it decides if you're both still in costume at the end of the night.
Raid Both Closets Before You Shop
A good couples costume doesn't need money, advanced makeup or a week of building. It needs one clear color story, shapes that match, and a prop or two that explain the joke. Go through both closets together before buying anything, then let a thrift store and a bag of felt fill the gaps. Think about the weather, the venue and how far you'll walk, and settle the shoes first. Most of all, pick a pairing you're both happy to wear, because a costume one person was talked into always shows in the photos.
